He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

!
1. Background / Overview:!
!
!
The New Midland Group would like to commission a creative individual to design the logo and
branding for The New Midland Group.!
!
The original Midland Group was an arts organisation formed in 1943 in Nottingham, closing in
1987. The first gallery was set up in one room on Bridlesmith Gate. During its time, the Midland
Group had a profound effect on the development of Performance art and Live Art. !
!
The New Midland Group is an artist led consortium made up of three independent artist studios;
Backlit, One Thoresby Street and Primary who wish to develop the ongoing legacy of The Midland
Group. The New Midland Group was formed in 2010 (originally named Nottingham Artist Led Con-
sortia), following a successful cross-city collaboration during Sideshow 2010 and again for the
World Event Young Artists 2012. !
!
The founders and core members of the group are;!
!
Matt Chesney, Director, Backlit!
Dexter Prior, Studio Manager, One Thoresby Street!
Michelle Bowen, Development Director, PRIMARY!
Rhiannon Jones, Marketing Manager, Backlit!
!
As well as respectively maintaining a diverse and accessible public programme, the partners are
also responsible for The New Midland Group and assist in curating a series of events aiming to
engage a wider public audience in the Nottingham Visual Arts Scene and promote it’s other cre-
ative links within the East Midlands network.!
!
We would like this vibrant and energetic way of working to be reflected in the branding for NMG.!
!
!
2. What is the objective, the purpose of the design?!
!
The overall design can have a huge influence on the success of a company’s marketing strategy,
so we expect the commissioned artists design to adequately reflect both the history and the ethos
of New Midland Group in the Nottingham art community. !
!
!
The purpose of branding/logo.!
!
• To gain exposure/PR for NMG and grow our identity!
• To facilitate and enhance long-term campaigns which aim to create a strong voice for NMG
through social media platforms.!
• To engage and build our audience and subsequently promote a suite of programming we aim to
run from within the three organisations of Backlit, Thoresby Street and Primary.!
• Generate interest in the consortium from the public, both from artists and non-artists.!
• To appeal to a wider professional and creative audience, in and out of the East Midlands.!
• To increase investment and sustainability!
What we hope NMG will achieve:!
!
• Be able to offer shared resources of the venues to non studio based artists!
• Allow access to temporary spaces at venues to non -studio based artists !
2. • Support and inform undergraduates about our work and running studio!
• Share and connect programming to a wider group!
• Develop a professional development offer for studio and non studio artists!
• Offer skill sharing events, new processes and ways of working!
• Develop and increase connectivity to international working!
!
!
3. What we are looking for.!
!
The overall aim of the graphic design is to create a bold memorable identity for The New Midland
Group that can be used across a range of marketing tools for the duration of the Consortium’s life-
time. We are looking for:-!
!
• An original identity for NMG that will respond to the key themes, be striking, versatile, Innovative
and fresh and work across a number of different print and web media.!
• A simple design that can be modified to work across a variety of social media platforms i.e. logo
formats that will accommodate Twitter and Facebook profile picture & banners. Background logo
for website, email and colour branding for other print based media such as flyers, business
cards, posters and invitations. Where using text, the type font should be an original design.!
!
4. Who we want to appeal to!
!
New Midland Group are trying to appeal to culturally inquisitive, ‘young urban contemporaries’ so
when thinking about a design, be sure to consider colour, quantity and quality of text, typography,
imagery, layout and use of space and the atmosphere that particular designs create - the logo
should accurately reflect the ethos of the New Midland Group. !
!
The New Midland Group is a relatively new partnership but would be delighted to support the se-
lected artist or graphic designer through the use of their design. Although we can’t offer much, the
designer can expect to feature on the NMG website, have credits in our future campaigns and ex-
tend their network exponentially through the partners; along with all the tea and coffee you can fur-
nish yourself with. We can offer the successful applicant a £450.00 stipend for the cost of the work
and publicity and promotion from the Partners of New Midland Group.!
