Monitoring NGINX (plus): key metrics and how-to
NGINX just works and that's why we use it. That does not mean that it should be left unmonitored. As a web server, it plays a central role in a modern infrastructure. As a gatekeeper, it sees every interaction with the application. If you monitor it properly it can explain a lot about what is happening in the rest of your infrastructure.
In this talk you will learn more about NGINX (plus) metrics, what they mean and how to use them. You will also learn different methods (status, statsd, logs) to monitor NGINX with their pros and cons, illustrated with real data coming from real servers.

Load balancing in the SRE way

A key feature when monitoring and debugging any Cloud infrastructure is to provide the ability to trace, track, and collate all the individual, discrete steps that compose an event. A typical resource action in OpenStack is often a combination of smaller tasks -- which given the distributed nature of OpenStack -- can fail at unpredictable points in the workflow. By collecting the appropriate events, operators can view all events within Ceilometer, filter on a failed action and trace back the history of related events to spot anomalies or errors. In this talk, we provide an overview of the recent enhancements made in Ceilometer to support the collection of event notifications from OpenStack services. We will describe: how events are processed, transformed and stored in Ceilometer; how you can derive metrics from events; and how it’s possible to track the events of a resource and analyse where errors occur.

Yottaa uses MongoDB to store and analyze large amounts of web performance data collected from over 27,000 URLs. Some key challenges included collecting over 10GB of data per day with a small engineering team. MongoDB allows data to be stored in documents rather than rows, improving the efficiency of aggregation and reporting. Data is sharded across multiple MongoDB servers for scale and redundancy. Lessons learned include considering collection sharding earlier and carefully adding indexes in production.

Krux is an infrastructure provider for many of the websites you
use online today, like NYTimes.com, WSJ.com, Wikia and NBCU. For
every request on those properties, Krux will get one or more as
well. We grew from zero traffic to several billion requests per
day in the span of 2 years, and we did so exclusively in AWS.
To make the right decisions in such a volatile environment, we
knew that data is everything; without it, you can't possibly make
informed decisions. However, collecting it efficiently, at scale,
at minimal cost and without burdening developers is a tremendous
challenge.
Join me in this session to learn how we overcame this challenge
at Krux; I will share with you the details of how we set up our
global infrastructure, entirely managed by Puppet, to capture over
a million data points every second on virtually every part of the
system, including inside the web server, user apps and Puppet itself,
for under $2000/month using off the shelf Open Source software and
some code we've released as Open Source ourselves. In addition, I’ll
show you how you can take (a subset of) these metrics and send them
to advanced analytics and alerting tools like Circonus or Zabbix.
This content will be applicable for anyone collecting or desiring to
collect vast amounts of metrics in a cloud or datacenter setting and
making sense of them.

How to measure everything - a million metrics per second with minimal develop...
Krux is an infrastructure provider for many of the websites you
use online today, like NYTimes.com, WSJ.com, Wikia and NBCU. For
every request on those properties, Krux will get one or more as
well. We grew from zero traffic to several billion requests per
day in the span of 2 years, and we did so exclusively in AWS.
To make the right decisions in such a volatile environment, we
knew that data is everything; without it, you can't possibly make
informed decisions. However, collecting it efficiently, at scale,
at minimal cost and without burdening developers is a tremendous
challenge.
Join me in this session to learn how we overcame this challenge
at Krux; I will share with you the details of how we set up our
global infrastructure, entirely managed by Puppet, to capture over
a million data points every second on virtually every part of the
system, including inside the web server, user apps and Puppet itself,
for under $2000/month using off the shelf Open Source software and
some code we've released as Open Source ourselves. In addition, I’ll
show you how you can take (a subset of) these metrics and send them
to advanced analytics and alerting tools like Circonus or Zabbix.
This content will be applicable for anyone collecting or desiring to
collect vast amounts of metrics in a cloud or datacenter setting and
making sense of them.
Enterprise grade deployment and security with PostgreSQL

Naxsi, an open source WAF for Nginx
Naxsi is an open source web application firewall (WAF) built for Nginx. It uses a simple rule-based approach that relies on a small set of rules targeting common vulnerabilities like SQL injection and cross-site scripting rather than complex signatures. This makes it fast, predictable, and able to protect websites against attacks without needing frequent signature updates. However, it requires whitelisting to avoid blocking legitimate requests. Naxsi also offers flexible options for handling blocked requests.

Rohit Yadav presented ideas for improving the future of CloudStack virtual routers. Currently, VR upgrades cause downtime as the old VR is destroyed and a new one provisioned. Rohit proposed keeping the existing VRs and applying live patches to eliminate downtime. He also suggested containerizing non-core services and providing core services directly from the hypervisor kernel to reduce the VR footprint. Finally, Rohit discussed refactoring CloudStack's network types and implementing a network designer to support complex topologies.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
