Andrew Wainer presented on immigration as it relates to poverty and hunger. He discussed high levels of poverty and food insecurity in Mexico and Central America, where over half the population lives on less than $2 per day in some countries. This contributes to unauthorized immigration to the United States. While in the US, unauthorized immigrants and their children experience poverty rates above 30% and the highest food insecurity rates. Immigrants make up around 75% of the US agricultural workforce and experience poverty levels and annual incomes below the individual poverty line.
