The Big Shift: How VCU Libraries Moved 1.5 Million Volumes to Prepare for the...Charleston Conference
- VCU Libraries had been grappling with space problems for years as their collections grew rapidly, exceeding capacity.
- They undertook a massive project called "The Big Shift" to weed, withdraw, re-shelve and move over 1 million volumes to off-site storage. This created more space for student seating and study areas before a new library building.
- The project involved reviewing collections, shifting books between floors, consolidating spaces, and celebrating upon completion to relieve overcrowding and better serve student needs.
This document summarizes the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI) consortial demand-driven ebook acquisition pilot. USMAI is a consortium of 16 public university libraries in Maryland serving over 160,000 students. The pilot used a limited lending model from EBL where additional copies were purchased after 3 short-term loans. In the first 10 months, there were over 4,600 loans and 57 autopurchases totaling $57,231.77 spent. Based on the results, the consortium lowered the threshold for autopurchases from 6 to 3 loans and expanded the pilot for a second year.

Science Education Gone Wilde: Creating Science References that WorkCharleston Conference
The document discusses challenges in science education and communication. It notes that U.S. education is falling behind in STEM proficiency and that science ideas do not flow freely within and across sciences. The key to better science communication is emphasized as moving beyond just correctness, accuracy, authority, currency and clarity to also emphasize the dynamic of learning, knowing the audience, and anticipating their needs and expectations. Adaptive learning tools are highlighted as a way to test student knowledge and weaknesses to allow targeted revisions.
This document summarizes changes to the operations of the academic library at the University of California, Merced from 2014-2020. It discusses the library's transition to primarily electronic collections, including 90% of serials and over 1.6 million e-books available through various demand-driven acquisition models. However, large increases in short-term loan rates for some e-books resulted in significantly higher costs in late 2014 and forced the removal of over 100,000 titles from the acquisition program. Despite bumps, the library observed strong acceptance of electronic resources over a 10-year period but continuing need for print materials in some disciplines.
This document summarizes Virginia Tech University Library's implementation of a purchase-on-demand (POD) pilot program to fulfill interlibrary loan requests. The program started in 2013 and integrated acquisitions and collection management functions with interlibrary loan. It allowed purchasing needed articles and books instead of requesting them through traditional interlibrary loan when it was cheaper than fees. Over the first year, the program purchased over 900 articles and 370 books. The library planned to further integrate content delivery processes and refine data collection to support collection management decisions.
Damon Zucca from Oxford University Press presented on how Wikipedia is beneficial for scholarship. He explained that Wikipedia is a major referral source for Oxford reference works, accounting for 40% of visits to Grove Music and 20% of visits to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Zucca also discussed a partnership between OUP and Wikipedia where approved Wikipedians are given free access to Oxford reference materials to help improve Wikipedia entries and provide vetted sources.
Researchers are increasingly sharing their data, though many have concerns about doing so. According to a 2014 survey by Wiley of over 2,800 researchers globally:
- 52% have publicly shared their data, with the most common reasons for not doing so being intellectual property issues and concerns about work being copied or data misinterpreted.
- Life sciences researchers most often share through journals, while physical scientists less often use discipline-specific repositories.
- The majority of researchers across fields said data sharing is standard practice and increases impact, though concerns about copying and misuse were also common.
- Data is usually under 10GB in size and stored on personal hard drives once projects are complete.

This document describes a collaboration between Findacure, a UK charity focused on rare diseases, and Elsevier to mobilize informational resources for congenital hyperinsulinism (CHI), a rare genetic disease. Elsevier will provide Findacure access to its extensive literature database and text mining capabilities to summarize what is known about CHI mechanisms, identify potential drug targets, and find approved drugs that may treat CHI. The collaboration aims to support Findacure's efforts to drive research, develop treatments, and help patients by providing structured, analyzed information extracted from Elsevier's literature and linking researchers and institutions working on CHI.
Developing data services: a tale from two Oregon universitiesAmanda Whitmire
While the generation or collection of large, complex research datasets is becoming easier and less expensive all the time, researchers often lack the knowledge and skills that are necessary to properly manage them. Having these skills is paramount in ensuring data quality, integrity, discoverability, integration, reproducibility, and reuse over time. Librarians have been preserving, managing and disseminating information for thousands of years. As scholarly research is increasingly carried out digitally, and products of research have expanded from primarily text-based manuscripts to include datasets, metadata, maps, software code etc., it is a natural expansion of scope for libraries to be involved in the stewardship of these materials as well. This kind of evolution requires that libraries bring in faculty with new skills and collaborate more intimately with researchers during the research data lifecycle, and this is exactly what is happening in academic libraries across the country. In this webinar, two researchers-turned-data-specialists, both based in academic libraries, will share their experiences and perspectives on the development of research data services at their respective institutions. Each will share their perspective on the important role that libraries can play in helping researchers manage, preserve, and share their data.
The document introduces the concept of a "Libriome Research Core", which is a proposed library research core at the University of Michigan. It summarizes that a library research core would provide centralized shared resources like other research cores, with a focus on information resources and expertise in areas like discovery, access, assessment, organization, synthesis, and dissemination of information. It then provides examples of specific services a library research core could offer, such as support for grant compliance, intellectual property, data services, data visualization, new publication types, research impact and promotion, and collaborations. The document advocates that a library could function as a valuable research core similar to other institutional cores.

This document summarizes a presentation on evaluating U.S. public policy regarding public access to federally funded research. It provides background on policies requiring researchers to submit final peer-reviewed manuscripts to public repositories within 12 months of publication. While attempts to restrict and broaden public access have failed, the Obama administration supported more open access and data. Proponents argue this increases innovation but opponents remain. Recommendations include reducing embargo periods and increasing compliance through improved systems and reduced burden on researchers. Higher education leaders are encouraged to educate on open access issues and monitor related global and funder policies.
It is about introducing the research concept for the undergraduate students studying in life science stream. It is even helpful for the teachers at UG levels.

LAND USE LAND COVER AND NDVI OF MIRZAPUR DISTRICT, UPRAHUL
This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
crucial for coordinated efforts across different administrative levels. Advanced technologies like

Changes in vegetation cover refer to variations in the distribution, composition, and overall
structure of plant communities across different temporal and spatial scales. These changes can
occur natural.
How to Add Chatter in the odoo 17 ERP ModuleCeline George
In Odoo, the chatter is like a chat tool that helps you work together on records. You can leave notes and track things, making it easier to talk with your team and partners. Inside chatter, all communication history, activity, and changes will be displayed.
How to Make a Field Mandatory in Odoo 17Celine George
In Odoo, making a field required can be done through both Python code and XML views. When you set the required attribute to True in Python code, it makes the field required across all views where it's used. Conversely, when you set the required attribute in XML views, it makes the field required only in the context of that particular view.

Minority Access to Research Careers Undergraduate Student Training in Research (MARC U*STAR) The MARC U*Star Program is an NIH funded honors program intended to prepare highly able minority students for graduate programs at outstanding universities throughout the United States. The MARC U*Star Program pays partial tuition and provides students with stipends to undertake research projects in UCLA faculty laboratories during the academic year. Students are also funded to participate in laboratory research at other universities during the summer. Trainees are encouraged to give oral and poster presentations of their research at local and national conferences. Trainees also receive special mentoring and preparation via counseling, journal clubs, workshops and honors courses.
The Howard Hughes Undergraduate Research Program (HHURP) is intended for students planning to pursue graduate studies in the biomedical sciences
The HHURP offers UCLA students the opportunity to work closely with faculty on biomedical research topics during the academic year and summer. Because the HHURP in an intensive research program, students are expected to spend a minimum of 10 hours per week in a laboratory
About the Biomedical Research Minor
The UCLA Minor in Biomedical Research was officially launched in Spring 2007. Conceived by Prof. Utpal Banerjee and Dean Fred Eiserling as a logical extension of Dr. Banerjee's highly successful HHMI Professors program, the Undergraduate Research Consortium in Functional Genomics (URCFG; www.bruinfly.ucla.edu), the Minor was designed to make laboratory research a core part of the scientific curriculum as early as the first year of college. Independent research is complemented by coursework that develops important skills such as critical thinking, analysis of research literature and data presentation. In addition, an ethics and social science component trains students to recognize the political, social and philosophical issues facing science today.
The UCLA Minor in Biomedical Research was made possible by generous support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Message fro John Olson, Oct. 25, 2010: Here are two other publications. Eight undergraduates are represented in the authors list and both papers have first authors that did the research as undergraduates. Both of them graduated before the papers came out, but the work was conducted when they were undergrads.

SJR: weighted citations per document
SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) , is a measure of the scientific prestige of scholarly sources: value of weighted citations per document. A source transfers its own 'prestige', or status, to another source through the act of citing it. A citation from a source with a relatively high SJR is worth more than a citation from a source with a lower SJR. For more information on
SNIP: SNIP = Source normalized impact per paper: corrects for differences
in the frequency of citation across research fields
Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP) measures contextual citation impact by weighting citations based on the total number of citations in a subject field. The impact of a single citation is given higher value in subject areas where citations are less likely, and vice versa
Citations: Total number of citations received by a journal in the year,
considering all documents.
Documents: Total number of documents published in the journal in the year.
% Not Cited: Percentage of documents published in that year that have never
been cited to date.
