New York City began as a Dutch colony called New Amsterdam and became a major global center of trade and immigration due to its large natural harbor. It was the first capital of the United States and saw tremendous growth through industrialization and infrastructure projects in the 19th century. However, this also led to rising inequality between the wealthy elite and poor immigrants throughout the late 19th century.
