1. In the 1830s, many people poured into Manhattan looking for work and New York City transformed from a traditional city into mainly a business district with no homes. By the Civil War, New York had become the largest industrial city. 2. In 1863, draft riots broke out as working class men resented that the wealthy could buy their way out of conscription. Over several days, riots caused at least 2000 injuries and 120 civilian deaths. 3. During the Great Depression in the 1930s, New York City was hit hard with massive unemployment and homelessness as thousands were evicted from their homes and lived in improvised camps.
