What is a Blog?
A blog (a combination of the words "web" and "log") is a regularly
updated website that typically combine text, images (graphics or video),
and links to other websites. Blogs are often informal—taking on the tone
of a diary or journal. Some blogs are personal, while others provide news
updates.
Many blogs encourage dialogue by allowing their readers to leave
comments. Blogs provide opportunities for you to share information and
engage in an online conversation with your target audience(s).
Some common blogging platforms include:Blogger , TypePad ,
and WordPress .
4. Social Network Sites
What are online social network sites?
Social network sites are online communities that allow you to connect
with, or provide resources to, clients, colleagues, family, and friends. Many
social network sites allow you to upload videos, photos, create a blog, post
events, join groups, and send messages.
There are many different types of social network sites, many of which are
free, and they range from general to those tailored for a specific
demographic or interest area.
Examples of general social network sites include Facebook , LinkedIn,
Devianart etc.
5. Mashups
What are Mashups?
A Mashup is a website that combines data from more than one
source into a single tool. Data sources often include maps (such
as Google Maps and databases (such as a spreadsheet of clinic
locations).
Mashups allow you to search for and locate information and services.
They also can help you track information such as disease outbreaks.
6. Twitter
What is Twitter?
Twitter allows you to share information, ask questions, and connect
with people around common interests.
You use your computer or mobile phone to send short messages, or
“tweets,” that are limited to 140 characters.
People can sign up on Twitter to follow your tweets. You can choose to
follow people and will receive their tweets, too.
7. E cards
What is an e-Card?
Electronic greeting cards, or e-cards, are similar to a postcard or
greeting card, but are sent via e-mail or over the Internet.
You can use them to invite people to an event, encourage safe
behaviors, or send a message to friends, colleagues, or clients.

8. Text Messaging
What is text messaging?
Text messaging, or texting, is a way to send information to and from
cellular and smart phone devices.
Messages can be sent as text (Short Message Service or SMS), or
pictures, video, and audio (Multimedia Messaging Service or MMS).
A text message can be sent to individual mobile phones or multiple
phones.
9. Mobile
What is mobile?
Mobile is a way of viewing, receiving, and/or sending information to and
from cellular phones and other wireless devices.
Mobile encompasses many things - the mobile web, mobile applications,
and text messaging.
The mobile web allows you to visit websites on your device with a mobile
browser.
Mobile applications or “apps” are installed on your mobile device to
perform specific tasks.
While some devices come with apps, you can also download apps from an
online app store.
10. Video Games
What are video and computer games?
Video and computer games are played on game devices (such as
Nintendo’s Wii, XBox, and Playstation), and computers. There are single
player games, social (or multiplayer) games, and massively-multiplayer online
games (MMO), where large numbers of participants play together over the
Internet.
Unlike movies or television, when you play a video and computer game
you become part of the action and determine what happens. You can learn by
doing, and, in multiplayer and MMO games, by teaching others. Historically,
most video games have focused on entertainment, but there are more and
more educational games.
11. Photo sharing sites
What are online photo sharing sites?
Online photo sharing sites allow you to upload, store, organize, and
share photos. To view and/or upload your digital photos to a photo sharing
site you need a camera, computer, or a mobile phone with an Internet
connection.
Many users on photos sharing sites offer their photos under a creative
commons license so others can use the photos.
Common photo sharing sites include Flickr , SmugMug , Picasa ,
and Photobucket . These sites share much in common with online social
network sites, like Facebook and MySpace —users can connect with each
other, send messages, leave comments, and share photos.
12. Video Sharing sites
What are video sharing sites?
Video sharing sites allow you to upload and share online videos similar
to photo sharing sites.
Video sharing sites store the videos and invite you to share them in a
variety of ways.
One of the most common video sharing sites is YouTube .
13. Virtual Worlds
What are virtual worlds?
A virtual world is a computer-based, simulated environment. You can
create a digital representation of yourself, known as an avatar and then
interact with other avatars to connect, collaborate, and socialize.
A growing number of educational institutions and non-profits are
using virtual worlds to create community, share information, and as
training and teaching venues.
Some common virtual worlds include Second Life , Club
Penguin , Habbo , andWhyville .
14. Podcasts
What are podcasts?
Podcasts (a combination of the terms "iPod" and "broadcast") are audio
or video files that you can listen to or watch on your computer or on a
variety of portable media devices.
They are usually short, often free, and usually a part of a series. You can
subscribe to receive new podcasts automatically via your computer or other
media device. You can also download from a website or a variety of podcast
directories such as iTunes or Zune .
Podcasts are often an easy, inexpensive way to gather and provide
information to your target audience(s). They also offer an audio alternative
to text.
15. Webcasts & Webinars
What are webcasts, web conferences and webinars?
A webcast is a way of broadcasting over the Internet. A webcast may either be
distributed live or recorded, and may be one-way or conversational. You can
participate from your own computer, and often can interact by phone or online
through the webcasting program.
Web conferences are used to conduct live meetings or presentations over the
Internet. In a web conference, you can sit at your own computer and can connect
to other participants via the Internet.
A webinar is a specific type of web conference. It is typically one-way, from the
speaker to the audience. A webinar can be very collaborative and include polling
and question & answer sessions.
Two of the many vendors for webcast, web conference, and webinar programs
include WebEx and GoTo Webinar .
16. QR Codes
What are QR Codes?
"QR" (or "quick response") codes store information in the form of a two-
dimensional square barcode. QR codes direct users to mobile websites or
videos, store text or contact information, call a phone number, and/or send
text messages and emails.
People interact with QR codes by scanning the barcode with their mobile
phone camera. A QR reader application is needed to detect the QR code. You
can download a QR reader application to your smartphone through a mobile
application store. It is possible to track when, where, and how many people
are scanning QR codes with Google Analytics, Bit.ly, and other services.
17. Wikis
What are wikis?
Wikis are essentially a webpage with an edit button. A wiki allows you
to collaborate online. You can make wikis public or password-protected.
Users can add pages or documents to a wiki and edit them—and you
can view changes made by different users or roll back to previous versions.
There are many free and inexpensive wiki services, such
as PBworks , Wetpaint , andWikispaces .
18. Social Bookmarking
What is social bookmarking?
Social bookmarking is a way to store, organize, and search websites. You
can save links to (or “bookmark”) web pages that you want to remember
and/or share.
These bookmarks are usually public, but you can choose to save them
privately and share them only with specific people, groups, and networks.
Social bookmarking sites use “tags” or keywords to help organize your
bookmarks. Tags also help people search bookmarks and find information
There are many social bookmarking sites, but some of the most popular
ones are delicious anddiigo . Others like digg and reddit allow you vote on or
rate other people’s bookmarks.
19. Widgets
What are widgets?
A web widget is a small application that you can embed in a social
network, blog, or website. You can develop your own widget or copy the
code from an existing widget.
Some widgets allow you to embed a photo or video viewer, conduct polls,
and fundraise. Others allow you to incorporate news or headlines from other
websites.
There are many free or inexpensive services that provide tools to create
your own widget.
Some examples
include Clearspring and Gigya . Widgetbox , Sprout and iWidgets can help
you develop and distribute your widget.
20. RSS Feeds
What are RSS feeds?
“RSS” stands for “Real Simple Syndication.” RSS feeds are a way to
distribute online content such as blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts.
With an RSS feed, you subscribe to a particular website and automatically
receive updates via email or a news reader.
You can use RSS feeds to stay updated about new content from many
different websites and organizations. You can also use RSS feeds to share news
and updates from your organization with clients and colleagues.
Some common RSS readers include GoogleReader , NetVibes ,
and Bloglines . Tools that will allow you to receive RSS feeds via email
include Feedblitz , and ZapTXT .
