The Cultural Bias in Intelligence Tests
IQ TEST RESEARCH
A Research of the Reliability and Validity of the PSYGAT on Different Linguistic Backgrounds
Abstract
The issue of cultural bias in intelligence tests sparks debates every time the latter is created or
administered, resulting to many researches into how the reliability and validity of an ability test
may differ when assessed on groups from different cultural linguistic backgrounds. The aim of this
study is to test the reliability and validity of the PSYGAT Verbal IQ Test on university students
from English speaking backgrounds (ESB) and non English speaking backgrounds (NESB) in
relation to the Queendom Verbal IQ Test and Cultural Fair IQ Test. 445 third year psychology

Method
Participants
Participants of this study were 445 third year Psychology students; 354 females and 91 males,
from Monash University Campuses in Australia, Malaysia, South Africa and the Singaporean
off campus, involving participants with a wide variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Participants were aged 19 to 62 (M = 23.53, SD = 7.08), in which two participants failed to
provide their age information. They were categorized as either from an English speaking
background (ESB) or a non English speaking background (NESB) based on the first language
information they provided at the end of each tests (Queendom Verbal IQ and Cultural Fair IQ Test,
and PSYGAT). 319 participants were categorized to the ESB group and 126 participants to the
NESB group.
Materials
Participants had to complete the Queendom Verbal IQ and Cultural Fair IQ Tests, and the
PSYGAT. All these three tests can be accessed through their Monash Blackboard site. The
Queendom Verbal IQ Test comprised of 70 items which includes items on analogies, idioms and
expressions, vocabulary and reading comprehensions, with the objective assessing verbal abilities.
With a sample size of approximately 120,000 (M = 100, SD = 15), the reliability as internal

Persuasive Essay On Pit Bulls
As people walk down the street they pass many different dogs, dogs of various breeds. People
pass these cute, loveable creatures walking with their owners and may even coo about them, or
wish their furry friend were with them. Suddenly, they see a vicious escape psycho killer mere
feet away from them. This killer is only a pit bull, but these people associate this breed with
violence, danger, and death. While only a few number of pit bulls are dangerous, an incredible
amount of people believe that this breed are the mass murderers of the dogrealm. Pit bulls do not
deserve the negative perceptions they receive because, other dog breeds are more aggressive,
their behaviors rely on their owners, and the sensationalized media about the breed. A dog s
temperament is the way the react in different situations. A dog with a good temperament can react
to various situations calmly and will not be aggressive. The American Temperament Test Society
holds an event a few times a year to collect data about different breeds temperaments and how
friendly these dogs are (ATTS). The test consists of walking in an enclosed track where the dog
will react to different strangers and noises. The percent of pit bulls that passed the temperament test
is 87.4 percent. This is a shockingly high percent considering that many people think they are
creatures from the devil. Pit bulls scored way higher than Dachshunds, 68.8 percent, and Collies,
80.6%. Pit bulls even scored higher than on of

Disadvantages Of Elastomers
1.Segmented polyurethanes
Segmented polyurethanes are a broad class of polymers whose properties range from those
characteristic of tough plastics to very soft rubbers, depending on the soft segment length and
concentration. Polyurethane elastomers are high quality engineering materials combining high
elasticity with high hardness and low wear. It is very important to mention and understand, during
working with polyurethanes that we dealing with two types of materials : plastics and elastomers ,
which have the identical manufacturing process.
Elastomers are defined as materials that possessed high, reversible deformations. Crosslinking of
elastomers obtain these reversibility of extension. In polyurethane elastomers crosslinking could be
presented with two different natures of bonding as chemical as a physical. As said below

A Brief Note On The Earthquake Of Earthquake
Abstract
Earthquake engineering is a subject where a person can be overwhelmed with information but
still crave for knowledge due to its unpredictable nature. Earthquakes are a natural repetitive
occurrence on planet earth, which due to its devastating impact, have caused a lot of damage to
structures and caused loss of life. Therefore engineers, scientists and geologists were required to
take action and one of the many first steps was to identify the regions of seismic activity. The
argument in this essay is not how to prevent earthquakes as that is out of the control of humans
but how to minimise the damage and deaths caused by them by designing better buildings. The
challenge to first achieve this goal was by engineers in America, where in 1906, in the state of
California, due to the frequent earthquakes in the state, building design codes and safety standards
were established. These design or seismic codes have helped to reduce the damages caused by
earthquakes. Therefore the solution for people in active seismic zones is to adhere to the seismic
codes strictly, designed by engineers in order to help strengthen buildings and reduce the loss of life
when an earthquake occurs.
The greatest number of earthquakes occurs in Asia, America, Caribbean Islands and Europe but
according to Hyndman, D and Hyndman, D (2012), earthquakes do not actually cause the death of
people but the falling debris and buildings do. This is why it is important for engineers to use

Detective Mccauley Observation
On March 13, 2017, I took part in a ride along with Detective Jason McCauley. Before going into
this ride along I did not know what kind of person I would be with as well as what kind of events I
would be experiencing.
When I was first met detective McCauley he came off a very nice person. He had a very quiet
demeanor, which I learned was helpful in the work he did. Detective McCauley is not an officer
that is usually on patrol, but he investigates crimes that happen on or around campus. Although he
does not say much, he does listen and that is a good trait because of the line of work he is in.
Detective McCauley didn t use his authority in a negative way, he was very approachable and

Although it didn t say that officers directly mediated, in the book on page 196 it talks about
mediation. As I said before although the mediation wasn t used in a civil law situation such as
divorce or child custody, the officers used mediation to help calm the parties down do they were
able to get to the bottom of the call. In the lecture, Chapter 7 Slides it showed a pyramid of the
early stages of the criminal justice process. I could witness four of the stages which was Criminal
Offense, contact with police, filing report, and the arrest. Although I witnessed it from the polices
view. I also witness the Formal steps in the criminal justice process. For example, when the police
spoke with the people involved in the domestic violence incident they were investigating the
situation, and when the officers made their arrest because they had probable cause because the man

Phi sigma sigma began when their founders went to the Dean of Women at Hunter College in
New York City with a plan. They wanted to begin a sorority that would be open to all women. On
November 26, 1913 Phi Sigma Sigma started. It was the first nonsectarian sorority, began under Fay
Chertkoff. Their Alpha Chapter was at Hunter College.
In 1913, in New York City, Phi Sigma Sigma was incorporated. Originally under Phi Sigma Omega,
their founders learned that another society were already using the name, so they chose the letters
they still use today. Their symbol is the sphinx, Shirley Cohen decided on this symbol because of
the mythological importance to women, and because it represented mystery and secrecy.

Phi Mu joined the NPC or National Panhellenic Conference in 1905, taking the letters Phi Mu. Beta

Long Beach Appraisal
Everyone involved in selling and buying of real estate in Long Beach has some unconditional
interest in appraisals. The result of an appraisal has something or the other to do with what the
buyer, seller, realtor, and lender are expecting out of the sale. If a property has been valued quite
low by the appraiser, the seller would then be needed to lower the market price he or she had set.
If we consider a Realtor in this case, it would mean a significant dip in commission. On the other
hand, a high valuation of a property may result in the buyer having to pay a lot more than its true
worth. In this situation, a realtor may receive high or low commission, depending on the final
selling/buying price of the property. With these situations, you... Show more content on

If you are considering to hire someone to do this job, you should make sure that you approach a
local appraiser, having a number of appraisal years in his locker. If you reach someone who has
recently received the license, you may have to bear some frustrations in getting what you
expect. However, an experienced appraiser will save you from having sleepless nights. This is
why you should always work with an appraiser who comes with all the credentials. The appraiser
may be hired, either by the buyer or the seller; for different reasons, of course. A buyer would
hire an appraiser to have an accurate assessment of property, its price, and mortgage options. On
the other hand, a seller would do the hiring to know the value of his or her property. Based on
the valuation and the areas of improvement, the seller can make amendments to his or her
property, if viable. This will help the seller in coming up to a maximum price that he or she can
get after selling his or her property. The seller would work to get the most of his or her property
and the buyer would look to pay as least as possible. In all of this, it is very important not to
forget the real reason why appraisals are done. An appraisal report features many things, most of
which are very hard to understand for a common buyer or seller. Good appraisers will ensure that
they go that extra mile and make buyers or sellers understand things that

Organizational Management, Leadership, And Leadership
Introduction The group submission for this week is a summary of five topics from Resilient
Leaders that relate to Organizational Management and Leadership. The narrative concludes with
three scriptures that group four feels sum up the responsibilities of a leader.
Five Topics The five topics that group four chose from Resilient Leaders that relate to
Organizational Management and Leadership are selfless service, integrity, leading by example,
vision, and traits of wise leadership.
Selfless Service. Dees (2013) stated, resilient leadership is selfless service over time from a
platform of character and competence. Selfless service (servant leadership) is an important
concept to Organization Management and Leadership. Selfless service is the foundation of
servant leadership. Selfless service is one of the most important traits of a good leader. For an
organization to thrive, it is important for a leader to serve their followers and place their needs
before his needs. Servant leadership has a profound impact on employee empowerment by fostering
an environment of empathy, awareness, healing, listening, stewardship and community awareness
(Murari Gupta, 2012). A selfless service leader can have mediating effects on both public service
motivation and corporate social responsibility that assist the organization from both a community
and goal attainment perspective (Tuan, 2016). Selfless service is serving others without regard for
self (Dees, 2013). Naturally,

Political Dimensions Of Us Immigration Policies
Political Dimensions of US Immigration Policies
Japanese and Chinese Immigration and Exclusionary Immigration Policies
Anti immigrant driven exclusive immigration policies barred Japanese and Chinese immigrants
from immigrating to the United States and accessing the privileges of citizenship. Through the
Immigration Acts of 1917, 1921, and 1924, the US government insured that Japanese and Chinese
immigrants could not immigrate to the United States by creating an artificial geographic area or
Asiatic Barred Zone that denied entry to any immigrants who migrated from this area most likely
Chinese or Japanese (Lee 2003, 39). The Immigration Acts intentionally deprived Japanese and

Despite their initial economic adversity, German and Italian immigrants accessed more privileges
because of their increasingly perceived whiteness among native Born Americans. As I have
mentioned, the ideas of American immigration therefore refer to immigrants who conform to the
Crevecoeurian Myth.
Reconciling the Paradox of US Immigration
Despite the radicalized economic, social, and political dimensions of US immigration,
policymakers like President Obama continue to sustain a singular view of US immigration that I
have argued is oriented around a white and European immigration experience. By revealing how
Chinese, Japanese, Italian and German immigrants have faced economic, social, and political
adversities, I have disproved President Obama s claim that the United States has been a beacon to
the world to these immigrant groups. President Obama s claim is particularly problematic because
it highlights how the paradox of immigration has diminished the severity and scope of United States
exclusive immigration policies. As policymakers begin to address the current issues of the
American immigration system, I argue that this objective is difficult to achieve.

School uniforms are the subject I chose. I agree with wearing of school outfits. I feel that it was
the best choice that the school board could have made by upholding wearing of uniforms. School
outfits cut down on wrongdoing in schools, and it additionally helps improving training, since
students are not stressed over what others are wearing. This provides an ideal opportunity to center
around training; it likewise takes the weight off of guardians since they don t need to stress over
purchasing heaps of garments for their youngsters to wear each day.

What s fascinating or supportive of this view? There is nothing useful about this view. What is
fascinating about this is school uniforms don t have anything to do with the guarantee of free
training. The families I have interacted with adore the idea of their kids wearing uniforms since
they can spare cash. Many people who send their kids to non public schools need to pay the
educational cost and uniform costs. The measure of cash a parent would spend on standard
garments is significantly more costly than purchasing uniforms.
What would I notice if I believed this view?I would see that this entire uniform level headed

Morality And Ethical Behaviour Within The Human Population
Morality and ethical behaviour within the human population is vital in order to conceive a healthy
society. Although throughout history, morals and ethics have been used interchangeably, they are
in fact not one in the same. Morality is within oneself and develops over a period of time as a
result of meeting and resolving moral issues as they come forth, whereas ethicsis essentially a moral
compass, or a set of rules one follows throughout the course of their life (Crebert, Patrick,
Cragnolini, 2004). From a personal perspective, I believe each individual has several distinguishing
moral codes they live by, even if they may not distinctly know it. I personally have several moral

The reasons for doing so was to limit the trade off between the emissions produced and
performance of the vehicle (Davenport, Ewing, 2015). The implications of this in the real world is
vast, affecting various interested parties around the world. Not only do employees, consumers and
shareholders feel misguided and lied to, but also society as a whole. Truthfulness and transparency
are fundamental concepts of morality that I use to define my life, and should have been executed in
the case of Volkswagen. If they were transparent with their fundamental operations from the
beginning, these corporate lies would never have occurred.
The Volkswagen scandal has caused, and will further cause, many consequences affecting major
associated parties. Consequences of this scandal extenuate to the individual, organisational and
social components of society. The individual consequences caused are mainly comprised of
consumers and how they have been affected. Consumers, overall, have felt that they have been
blatantly lied to and misguided by Volkswagen (Northern Daily Leader, 2015). This demonstrates
that Volkswagen seemingly do not possess the moral trait of transparency amongst its operations
with various stakeholders. Another aspect of society that has been adversely affected by this
scandal is the organisational component. Volkswagen has had harsh financial repercussions, posting

The American Of Revolt Against Great Britain
There were many reasons that the American colonies decided to revolt against Great Britain, but
some of the more major causes of the American revolution were the banning of arms , the very
unpopular Stamp Act, the Declaratory Act, and the Boston Tea Port Acts. Another unpopular Act
enforced on the colonies, by His Majesty of Great Britain, was the now famous Stamp Act. The
Stamp Act was a set of laws created by the King and parliament, saying that the American
colonists had to pay more taxes than the people in Great Britain were paying, as a way to pay off
the cost of the Seven Years War. This Act was upsetting to the colonists because they didn t get the
chance to have a say in wether or not they were okay with/wanted such large taxes being imposed
upon them. This can be seen in Document A, when the colonists wrote in a letter to the king that it
is inseparably essential to the freedom of a people, and the undoubted right of Englishmen, that no
taxes be imposed on them, but with their own consent, given personally, or by their representatives.
This quote shows that the colonists did not agree with the taxation, or at least not without them
being represented in Great Britain. The King placing all of these taxes on the American colonies
made them feel as if they were not being treated as actual Englishmen, but rather as the outcasts and
criminals that no one else wanted. This is evident in the letter written to the King, when the
colonies say that His Majesty s

The Vietnam War was a result of the United States involvement in the Cold War against the USSR.
The main goal of the United States during the Cold War was to contain communism and prevent the

Southeast Asia would become more susceptible to adopting communism. As a result, The United

One aspect of American masculinity is their need to satisfy their own needs, which includes
them satisfying their need for sexual interaction. So while the American soldiers were away
from home, they relied on the Vietnamese civilian women to satisfy this need. This urge of
American soldiers to seek sexual interactions with the Vietnamese is demonstrated by a quote of
a former Vietnamese prostitute. In an article that describes a vocational training center for
young girls recovering in South Vietnam, a former prostitute says I used to earn 2,000 piasters
[about $4.50] a night in Qui Nhon [...] with the Americans I could demand even more. When I
leave here and join a hairdresser s it ll take me a week to earn the same. This former prostitute
reveals the desperate urge of American soldiers to satisfy their sexual desires because they are
willing to overpay for a prostitute s services. American masculinity is the reason that interaction
between these two groups took place. The American service member had a desire for sexual
interaction, and the Vietnamese civilian women were able to satisfy this desire. This is not a result
of race, as this would imply that the Americans sought out Vietnamese because of their race. The
reason Vietnamese women were chosen to satisfy the Americans desire was because of their ease
of access. Vietnamese prostitutes were the easiest way for American soldiers to appease their sex
drive, so they took advantage of this opportunity.

After the stock market crash, known as Black Tuesday, in 1929, people panicked. As too much

was just in the Roaring Twenties , fell into the Great Depression. Suddenly, people were laid off
their jobs, couldn t buy things they had once not thought twice about, and struggled to afford food
for their families. People lost their homes, and teenagers lived on the streets. Farmers were in
debt, losing their farms, and had to deal with the Dust Bowl. The president at the time, Herbert

Grieving Styles In Ordinary People
Society and culture have created scripts (i.e., social norms) that dictate the ways in which we
are to grieve. These scripts also prescribe the unique ways in which men and women are
expected to respond to grief. Specifically, men s grief scripts suggest that men will resolve to
grieve in solitude as a demonstration of their self reliance. Men may also have muted emotional
response and expressed emotions are typically in the form of anger or guilt (Martin Doka, 2011).
Comparatively, women s grief scripts suggest that women are more emotive and seek support from
others to help cope with loss (Martin Doka, 2011).
However, the characters in Ordinary People do not conform to the stereotypical gender grief scripts
and instead reflect the different grieving styles captured in Martin and Doka s (2011) grieving
styles continuum. Martin and Doka (2011) conceptualizes grieving styles ranging on a continuum
from intuitive to instrumental. Grieving styles reflect individuals ability to adapt to loss and are
distinguished by their use of cognitive and affective domains to process grief.
Based on Conrad s character in the movie, he could be described as having more of an intuitive
grieving style. This style of grieving utilizes more of the affective domain and uses little of the
cognitive (Martin Doka, 2011). For the intuitive griever, grief is characterized by the experience of
painful feelings. The feelings of guilt and sadness were those that Conrad experienced the most.

American Workers and Labor Unions in The Twenties
In the period immediately following World War I, American workers struggled to earn a living as
prices rose and wages stagnated, forcing them to seek union support. Labor unions endeavored to
represent the working class against their employers and corporations, who refused to increase
wages or improve working conditions. In order to combat the capitalist s immense political clout,
unions made their voice heard through strikes. After the war, capitalists linked unions to the
mounting communist threat, stressing that strikes undermined capitalismand threatened a republican
form of government. As a result, government sided with capital against labor unions and the
struggle of the American workers, who had no voice against corporations. This struggle can be
exemplified in a correspondence between union leader, Samuel Gompersand bishop William
Quayle, published in The Twenties in Contemporary Commentary: Labor Capital . The letters
demonstrate that in the 1920 s, labor unions were necessary as a means to overcome capitalist
greed and enhanced the ideals of democracy by empowering the working class. Unimpeded in their
pursuit of maximum profits to the detriment of the workers, capitalists and their oppressive
methods made labor unions necessary. It is vital to acknowledge the possible bias in Gompers
argument, considering he is a union leader. Also, bishop Quayle s potential bias must be
considered, stemming from him being a clergymen who s in contact with those affected

Democratic Party Vs. Democratic Parties
Since the beginning the United States the its form of government has been considered unique.
While it is different from many other forms of government it gives each U.S. citizen the ability to
speak their mind on who they believe their country should be governed by and what laws they
should be governed under. In making these decisions citizens generally take a side, Republican or
Democrat. Republican and Democratic parties are two of the nations oldest political parties
however, when they originated the Republican party was the Democratic partythat we have today
and the Democratic party was the Conservative party we have today. To put that in simpler terms,
the Democratic party were the Confederates in the civil war while the Republican party was the
Union. Democrats of that time favored a limited government, supported the idea of manifest
destiny, and fought for the continuation of slavery whereas the Republican party of that time
opposed slavery, favored government policies such as nation currency, high tariffs, or increased
funding on the university system. The switch to the parties we know today is said to have
happened gradually between 1872. While the party system today is flipped from the original
Democratic and Republican parties it still flows from historic roots but the reasoning s and
demographics behind who identifies as Liberal and who identifies as Conservative has advanced.

The Secret Sharer Symbolism Essay
The novella, The Secret Sharer, by Joseph Conrad contains many great examples of symbolism,
strong and influential thematic elements, and tones of mystery and loneliness. From the
beginning of the story, the narrator uses the setting to explain the situation. The narrator
illustrates a picture of a captain far away from home with the crew that s not appropriately fond
of him. This separation gives the reader an idea of how lonely he is on the ship. The crew
dislikes him and feels unsafe around him, this makes it hard for the captain to build a sense of
trust and have strong friendships. The crew is very hesitant to do what the captain says to do.
The captain is properly stressed by his surroundings, the crew, making his judgment very dicey.
The silence in the book is used to create a sense of suspense. The suspense adds to the idea of the

The Leader Of The Movement
The Taiping movement originated in Guangxi, and rooted social problems had been generating
disorders for half a century. In the region, agriculture was very unstable and many people made
their living from challenging and detested trades such as disposing of human waste, mining, and
producing charcoal. The lowliest trades frequently involved a minority group, the Hakkas, and
tensions between them and the majority were rising. Problems may have been enhanced by sudden
changes in the opium trade and reactions to the cultural and economic impact of the Americans and
Europeans in Canton. The leader of the movement, Hong Xiuquan, was a slightly delusional
practitioner who, after learning about Christian teachings, came to believe that he was the younger
brother of Jesus and God had called upon him to save mankind. Xiuquan came from a Hakka
background and competed in the provincial Confucian examinations, desiring for a place in the
government. Unfortunately for him, he failed the examinations repeatedly. He spent some time in
Canton, where he met both Chinese and American Protestant missionaries and he was inspired by
their teachings. This led to his own interpretations of the Christian message. Xiuquan attracted a
community of believers, mostly the Hakkas. Local loyalty to the Taipings spread quickly, and as
their numbers started to multiply, they began to enlarge their area. The Taipings took a stand
against the Qing Empire by capturing villages to join their movement, and this

Taking a Look at Mental Illnesses
Mental illnesses are a serious matter that affect a person as much as someone with a physical
illness. Mental illnesses are medical conditions that affect a person s mental health. They are as
serious as other disorders such as diabetes and should be treated as so. The amount of talk by
those who aren t well informed and often assume has created many misconceptions about mental
illnesses. In order to successfully make those around people with mental illnesses to be aware of
the harm these disorders cause a person these misconceptions need to be cleared. Mental illnesses
need to be treated like the threat they indeed are like real illnesses.
Mental illnesses are conditions in which a person s mental health is affected to a point that they
aren t able to cope with life s expectations. An example is a common known disorder known as
depression, when someone experiences depression they may feel like they no longer want to thrive
and be happy in their life. This happens due to the amount of brain activity the disorder causes to
diminish. According to www.nimh.nih.gov when a person has depression he or she may expirience
being very tired, a loss of interest in activites once enjoyed, and thoughts or attemp of suicide.
Depression is caused by a couple of factors are genes and brain chemistry which is irregular to
normal people. Stress is a major factor that affects those with the mental illness because they are
not able to cope with it like the majority of people. The fact is

The Importance Of Mass Media Bias In The Media
1.Introduction
Having control over an entire country s population s opinion is a powerful thing to have.
Possessing that control would allow you to direct how the population spends their money or even
who they like and dislike in politics. The mainstream media news outlets have this control and are
expected to give us information that is unbiased, fair, and not meant to sway our opinion. The
topic I will be exploring is bias in the mainstream news media and how it affects their viewers. This
is an important topic in the field of communication because it has such a great impact on any
country that uses mass media to disseminate information. The information can be given to the
viewers with a certain twist to intentionally shape their view of an event, or it can be
unintentionally bias just by the tone and manner they are reporting on the event. I am going to
research how mass media news outlets influence the viewers opinion, and what goes into
picking the news stories covered. These are controversial topics to get into, but important to
consider. They can have a very big impact on things like elections for a political office, support or
dislike of a certain group, or can sway your opinion of who is the hero in a certain story. My
sources will need to show specific examples of how the media is biased towards one opinion, what
the effects are from this, and who makes the determination of the bias that is being displayed.

The Impact Of Religious Culture In Giovanni Boccaccio s...
Religious culture in Italy grew and developed in several ways over its span of existence. It was
also a time of recording information and countless people wrote during this time about the
different aspects of their country. Religion was an important part of the people s daily life, seeing
that it determined their afterlife. There are several stories and beliefs available about this time
period that are used for current references on how exactly the religious culture worked. In
particular, Giovanni Boccaccios Decameron, which he wrote as a series of short stories about the
religious culture during the 1350 s, which was not long after the Black Death. His series of fictional
short stories gave people a different side of the story and how people truly regarded religionduring
this time. Currently, people who read these excerpts can compose inferences on how religious
culture was back then and it gives a different thought process, seeing that while it is not
particularly true, it shows a different side of the religious culture. Specifically, the story he tells us
in this excerpt shows us a great deal about the religious culture of Italy during that time and how
seriously they regarded God and his forgiveness, so much that one man lived a horrid life and still
managed to gain forgiveness of the church and be buried there. Religious culture over the years has
changed in hundreds of ways, with copious different aspects to deal with and different statements

Historical Development Of Policing In America Essay
Describe the historical development of policing in America?
In the early days most police officers were once soldiers. There were also groups of citizens that
would join forces to protect themselves.
Our police system derives from the system our ancestors used in England. From this system we
derive concepts of limited police authority, local control, fragmented justice system that began in
Anglo Saxon England continued until 19th century. In this system, community was divided into
groups of 10 men who were responsible for ensuring that conduct of group was appropriate; if any
laws were broken, these men were to ensure that offender appeared in court 10 of these groups
were organized into larger group overseen by constables (who later ... Show more content on

As larger American cities developed, so did necessity for more formalized police organizations.
By 1693, NYC had 1st uniformed officer in 1731, their 1st precinct was constructed this
progression continued and in 1844, NY s night day forces were combined into NYPD; similar
advances took place in other early American cities.
The Civil War essentially stopped most advances in law enforcement, but was followed by
significant social changes technological advances that continued to force evolution of American

The Outbreak Of Acute Gastroenteritis
Introduction
An outbreak of infection or foodborne illness may be defined either as two or more linked cases
of the same illness, or as the situation when the observed number of cases unaccountably exceeds
the expected number (Food standard Agency, 2006). However, the World Health Organisation
(WHO) defines it as, any disease of an infectious or toxic nature caused by or thought to be caused
by the consumption of food or water Norovirus is the most common known cause of infectious
intestinal disease in Western Europe and North America [1 3] and one of the leading causes of
foodborne outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis [4 9]. It has been estimated that there are over 600,000
cases of norovirus infection in England each year [10], with infection rates peaking during the
winter months that lend the disease the initial description winter vomiting disease (Mounts et al.,
2000 EFSA).
Background
Noroviruses were first recognized in the year 1968 following an outbreak of gastroenteritis at an
elementary school in Norwalk, Ohio in the USA (Adler and Zickl,1969). For many years they
were known as Norwalk like viruses (NLV), or as small round structured viruses (SRSVs),
because of their appearance when viewed under an electron microscopy. Norovirus belongs to the
family Caliciviridae and is a non enveloped, single stranded positive RNA virus with a genome tail
and a single capsid polypeptide molecular mass (Greenberg,1981). Norovirus have a characteristic

The Limited Partnership Act 2008 Essay
The Limited Partnership Act 2008 came into force on 2nd May 2008 enabling registration of

This act came into action because of three main reasons ; firstly to revoke the special partnership

and similar to internationally recognized limited partnership in use overseas and thirdly to allow
the development of venture capital industry of New Zealand. By bringing this law into action New

The World On The Terrorism
When looking at the terrorism that ISIS has endued it has become very evident that a solution
needs to be drawn into action. In my opinion the only way to take down this organization is to
begin to treat it like the state that it is. A state is defined as: a nation or territory considered as an
organized political community under one government. ISIS has not only gained territory in Syria,
Iraq and Istanbul but according to New York Times columnist, Tim Arango, ISIS is building a
capacity to govern. In 2014, ISIS formally informed the world on their establishment of a caliphate.
This caliphate is governed under Islamic beliefs and rulers. They have begun issuing
identification cards for residents, promulgating fishing guidelines to preserve stocks, and
requiring that cars carry tool kits for emergencies (Arango). Believe it or not, ISIS has been a
state for two years, regardless of their lack of legitimacy, their consistent threat of violence against
any of those who oppose their beliefs allows them not only to get things done, but get them done
efficiently. Whether we want to accept it, ISIS is a state, and we need to treat it as such.
On the 29th of June in 2014, ISIS announced that a caliphate has been establish and the caliph was
to be Caliph Ibrahim. The saying goes, In order to kill a snake, one must cut off its head. The
head of ISIS is the caliphate in Iraq/Syria. I believe that collapsing the caliphate will collapse the

Environmental Waste And Its Effects On Carbon Emissions
To get around the issue of these powerful companies being upset from the negative financial impact
from the move to zero carbon, a shift must be made in governmental policy. Perhaps the solution
may not be punishing companies for producing too much pollution, but rewarding companies for
producing much less. In this way, the market for carbon emissions will eventually disappear and
naturally profit seeking companies will aim to pursue activities, hunt for new strategies, and invest
in infrastructure and equipment that result in lower carbon emissions. Beyond the simple reward
proposition, however, greener policies often result in higher long term profitability for companies
nonetheless. Environmental waste is often the best proxy for identifying and eliminating economic
waste, meaning that many companies are currently increasing their profitability while
simultaneously following a strategy in pursuance of zero carbon emissions. In fact, notoriously
profit focused companies like Tesco and WalMart have announced their intentions to pursue
environmental action not out of moral motivation, but in clear quests for greater profitability. The
reason for their actions is the simple recognition that environmental and economic interests are
often closely aligned. Nearly 50 separate studies from the Economist Intelligence Unit, Goldman
Sachs, AT Kearney, Deloitte, MIT Sloan, Harvard and others show that companies that commit to
environmentally responsible goals, particularly

The Agenda Setting Theory On The Public Agenda
Abstract
The history of the agenda setting theory goes back over 50 years to when it was introduced in a
1972 edition of Public Opinion Quarterly by Drs. Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw. It was
first developed as a means of studying the 1968 American presidential election as it relates to the
most important issues determined by the news media and the most important issues determined by
the 100 residents of Chapel Hill, North Carolina (McCombs Shaw, 1972). Still relevant today, the
agenda setting theory explains the influence of the media agenda on the public agenda. In a
comprehensive analysis of the agenda setting theory, agenda setting includes three levels or
psychological processes: basic agenda setting, attribute agenda setting and network agenda setting.
History of Agenda Setting Theory
The media s power in influencing public opinion has sparked the theory that we now know as
agenda setting. In 1922 this concept was first investigated by newspaper columnist Walter Lippman
(Wahl Jorgensen and Hanitzsch, 2009, pp.147). Since then Drs. Maxwell McCombs and Donald
Shaw have coined what we now know as the agenda setting theory. Their research of the 1968
presidential election of the Republican nominee Richard Nixon and the Democratic nominee
Hubert Humphrey proved groundbreaking. Before the agenda setting theory, assumptions were that
certain behaviors and attitudes were results of the way information was

Stereotypes In Alden Nowlan s The Fall Of A City
The main theme in the story The Fall of a City is heavily focused on stereotypes, there are many
issues to be addressed, but probably the most devastating and/or most impactful of these on our
protagonists future, is stereotyping. Alden Nowlan s short story is the story of a young boy who
minds his own business and plays with paper people and cardboard kingdoms up in his Uncle and
Aunt s attic suddenly has his self confidence and self esteem ripped from his hands due to his
Uncle s ruthless gender role stereotyping.
Our first example of stereotyping is when our protagonist Teddy s Uncle finds out that his nephew
enjoys pretending that he has paper people commanding a military up in his attic. When his uncle
discovers this he proceeds to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
... You d never believe it, but that great big lummox has been playing with paper dolls This is the
first clear example of his Uncle s firm belief of stereotypical gender roles. In the Uncle s mind he
believes that boy should not be playing with dolls, they should be doing manly things. Rather
than just disapprove of Teddy s behaviour, he chooses instead to chastise and humiliate Teddy for
the things he loves to do. The actions of Teddy s uncle have the real possibility of affecting the
self esteem of a boy for the rest of his life. Even before he goes up into the attic he has some sort of
stereotype of what the boy could be doing: Have you been up to some of your monkey shines up
there? ... Have you been playing with matches up there? With Teddy s presence being in the attic
all day, his uncle automatically assumes that he is getting into some sort of trouble and once
again tries and succeeds to embarrass him. As the uncle does not like who Teddy is becoming, he
doesn t even consider the possibility of him enjoying a game he has created and is playing quietly
by himself. Instead, he stereotypes Teddy as a bad child, and assumes he is causing mischief.
Nowlan does not only stereotype children, but also the aunt and

Essay on Hawaiian Navigation
Hawaiian Navigation
How did the Polynesians find their way to Hawaii, over two thousand miles from any other land?
Was it over population at home, or political turmoil? Whatever reason for leaving these people
used amazing knowledge and skill of the ocean and of the sky to navigate them to this new land.
They faced the unknown and braved into the wide open ocean for long periods of time. The real
focus in this paper is on the navigation techniques that they used in these voyages throughout the
Pacific.
It s impossible to teach someone the significance or the act of loving the stars and the ocean but that
s what makes navigation without instruments (wayfinding) so beautiful. One can give the heavens

Then in the 1980 s came the voyages of rediscovery navigated by Nainoa Thompson from Hawaii
to Tahiti and from Tahiti back to Hawaii. Thompson was the first Hawaiian to sail this route in
over 500 years. The voyages in between took the Hokule a (some 16000 miles) to the Society
Islands, Cook Islands, New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa and back home via Aitutaki, Tahiti, Rangiroa
in the Tuamotu Archipelago (Baybayan, Kawaharada, 1996). The Hokule a became the symbol of
pride in Polynesian heritage that links all the people of Polynesia together.
In the 1990 s there were more voyages to Marquesan Islands and from the West Coast of the
United States up to Alaska. This is when education became the focus of the voyages of the Hokule
a. They then built the Hawaiilo a, another Polynesian voyaging canoe, this one made of traditional
materials. The Hawaiilo a added to the curiosity and the revival of culture throughout the world.
The natives of all ands throughout the world are figuring out the importance of their cultures and
bringing back the knowledge. Now all cultures worldwide can help each other save the past and use
it for the future.

Nainoa Thompson created the star compass, as the basis for direction finding in non instrument

Comparison Of King Arthur And The Knights Of The Round Table
King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table: An Epic Hero for Modern Times
In about 1470, Thomas Malory finished Morte d Arthur, the first of the many legends written about
King Arthur. Even in modern times, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table are a favorite
subject in movies, books, and plays. Often times this is so because the Medieval Period in general,
and King
Arthur in particular, have an air of mystery, romance, fantasy, and adventure that are popular themes
in all times and cultures. I compared Malory s Morte d
Arthur with Camelot, a movie produced in 1967 that stars Richard Harris as King
Arthur and Vanessa Redgrave as Guenevere.
Camelot covers the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
. . quot; In Camelot, Mordred is Arthur s illegitimate son, although he keeps this a secret. This
possibly explains the contradiction of Mordred s position in the two pieces. Another difference in
the two works was that in
Camelot, Mordred tells Arthur, quot;I despise the sword, loathe the spear, and I detest horses. quot;
Yet in Morte d Arthur Mordred and Arthur fight and before
Arthur kills him, Mordred wounds Arthur badly. In Malory s work, I got the feeling that Mordred
was a big, burly, knight that loved a good fight. Yet in
Camelot, Mordred is a devilish looking, puny, scheming, young man who turns down Arthur s offer
of knighthood because he s just not quot;that type. quot; Mordred turns the knights against each
other which destroys the Round Table and brings
King Arthur s entire world crashing down around his ears.
The mood and tone of Camelot and Morte d Arthur are very different in most parts. The majority
of Camelot is cheerful, bright, and hopeful as Arthur creates a new society of quot;might for right.
quot; Only towards the end of the movie when the viewer is overcome with a sense of sadness and
impending catastrophe does the mood change to one of fatalistic tragedy. One cannot help but
wonder about the part that fate played in the society where the legends of King Arthur were
created. Like Romeo and Juliet, written about 120 years after Morte d
Arthur, which is filled with

Brief History Of Time By Stephen Hawking
For the second semester book report I chose to read A Brief History of Time by Stephen
Hawking. Before I started reading I knew what I signed up for. A lot of math, science and
complicated stuff that sometimes makes my head hurt. Nonetheless A Brief History of Time is
about the history of science, history of how the universe began and how the journey of finding the
theory for everything has been going. He talks about some of the theories that may help with
finding the theory like the black hole theory, general relativity, quantum mechanics, imaginary time,
string theory and many more. He also mentions the belief that people have that god created the
universe, that God created everything.
The book starts with Stephen Hawking talking about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A Greek astronomer named Ptolemy agreed with Aristotle theory and made a model that
provided a decent accurate system for predicting the places where heavenly bodies in the sky
were located. His model was accepted and adopted generally. But then a simpler model made by
a Polish priest, Nicholas Copernicus was suggested. His idea was that the sun was still at the
center and that the earth and the planets moved in circular orbits around the sun. Two
astronomers took this idea seriously Johannes Kepler and Galileo Galilei and they started publicly
supporting the Copernican theory. The death of the Aristotelian/Ptolemaic theory came in 1609
when Galileo started to look at the sky with a telescope. When he looked at Jupiter he saw that it
was by a lot of small satellites or moon that orbited around it. Johannes then changed Copernicus s
theory a bit by suggesting that the planets move in ellipses instead of circles. An explanation came
when Isaac Newton published his Philosophiae Naturalis Principia mathematica in 1687. In it he
provided a theory of how bodies move in space and time. He also made the complicated
mathematics needed to analyze those motions. Then questions were raised like whether the
universe had a beginning in time and whether it is limited in space.
Edwin Hubble in 1929 made an observation that the galaxies are moving rapidly away from us like
the universe is expanding. Then he thought that the universe was really close

University Of Pennsylvania Vs University Comparison Essay
When it comes to choosing a university, there are many qualities people have to know in order to
make the right choice. For example, how much it cost, where it is located, the ranking, the
environment, and more. Founded in 1927, the University of Houston is the leading public research
university in the vibrant international city of Houston (UH at a Glance). In contrary, Universityof
Pennsylvania is a private institution founded in 1740 (University of Pennsylvania). Both the
University of Houston and the University of Pennsylvania are great schools that have similarities

University of Pennsylvania, as informed, has been an institution for much longer than University of

University of Pennsylvania is more successful on School of Education, School of Medicine, and
some similar to the University of Houston, for example like School of Engineering (University of
Pennsylvania). All of these programs are great, from both universities. They are providing top
majors and making sure their students succeed. Everyone might think University of Pennsylvania
is more difficult, but it is all on how much the students put in effort. Similar to University of
Houston, students do not have to live on campus, but the percentage of people living off campus is
lower than people living in school property (University of Pennsylvania Academic Life). Even
though they do provide housing like every other college, students still decide to get their own home.
With the tuition and fees, pretty sure their dorms are expensive too. The environment might be the
same but it is all depending on how the students set up their schedule with

The main objective of this paper is to examine the effects of HIV/AIDS scourge on labour force
productivity of Adamawa state households. 2. Problem Statement The health status of the people
in any country is a critical element in the growth of its economy as well as an important factor in
the overall quality of life. AIDS tend to selectively affect women, youths, which are the vulnerable
groups; it will influence a wide range of social and economic factors. In Adamawa State,
agriculture is the dominant industry; high rate of infection could lead to the stagnation of the
industry. Recent studies have revealed that HIV/AIDS prevalence among women and youths is
increasingly worrisome. The target is the most productive group of the population (15 49 groups).
3. Literature Review and Conceptual Framework Until the early 1990 s, the empirical economic
growth literature focused exclusively on the role of capital and labour (The later often augmented
by schooling and technological change, but hardly ever on health as a key element of human
capital (Baro, 1991). Even where a relationship has been found between indicators of health and
income per capita, it has either been discounted or thought to be an indication of the impact of

Social Stress And Its Impact On The Classroom
Overview of Changes in this Resubmission I was delighted to receive encouragement to
resubmit this proposal and am extremely grateful to the five reviewers for their insightful
comments. I was gratified to read Reviewer 5 s comment that the proposed activities are creative,
original and potentially transformative, and Reviewer 1 s comments that this research may lead
to theoretical advances in the understanding of stigma more broadly and that I am an expert in
this field and well suited to carry out the proposed research. Although space limitations preclude
me from detailing how I addressed every individual comment, here I will summarize the major
changes to guide the Panel s review. I have kept the longitudinal study, which the entire Panel
supported. In response to the Panel s concerns about the experimental and speed dating studies, I
have dropped Studies 1 3 and replaced them with an experimental study that I have now
successfully piloted with 50 participants. This new study addresses Panel concerns about the
conceptualization of weight stigma and concerns that the manipulated construct might have been
general social stress or rejection rather than weight stigma specifically. I have added a follow up
point in the experience sampling study to assess weight so as to test the entire model. I have taken
to heart the criticism that perceived overweight status is an imperfect selection variable; all studies
now use samples with BMI 25 ( overweight ) and above. Carefully

Why Is Harry Potter Banned
The release of Harry Potter and The Sorcerer s Stone in Britain was originally called Harry Potter

Jingoism Research Paper
Jingoism is a term which many people are not familiar with. Extreme chauvinism or nationalism
marked especially by a belligerent foreign policy is the definition of Jingoism (Merriam
webster.com). Chauvinism is extremely close to jingoism when it comes to their definitions; the
main difference between the two words is that Jingoism is used to describe violent acts of
patriotism or nationalism. Violent acts of patriotism have become for widespread in recent years;
for example, ever since the events of 9/11 the United Stateshas been waging a war on terror. There
seems to be no end to radical Islamist groups based in the Middle East who hope to destroy the
United States, from more recent groups such as ISIS, to older enemies such as al Qaeda,... Show

One solution to jingoism is to spread awareness of jingoism; furthermore, if the general
population knew the meaning of the word, it would be more recognizable. In America, once
larger amounts of people learn when to spot jingoism, slowly over time jingoism would stop
completely due to the fear of voter backlash. The people will see and understand what the
government is trying to achieve, and the people will check when the government becomes too
warlike or when they use excessive force, such as the threat India made towards Amazon. While
constituents may not be able to stop what the government is doing, they can make sure that come
next election year that member of the government will not be elected again. No professional or
scientist has developed a solution for jingoism to date; furthermore, jingoism is not a large enough
problem in the world today to focus time on

  • 3. Persuasive Essay On Pit Bulls As people walk down the street they pass many different dogs, dogs of various breeds. People pass these cute, loveable creatures walking with their owners and may even coo about them, or wish their furry friend were with them. Suddenly, they see a vicious escape psycho killer mere feet away from them. This killer is only a pit bull, but these people associate this breed with violence, danger, and death. While only a few number of pit bulls are dangerous, an incredible amount of people believe that this breed are the mass murderers of the dogrealm. Pit bulls do not deserve the negative perceptions they receive because, other dog breeds are more aggressive, their behaviors rely on their owners, and the sensationalized media about the breed. A dog s temperament is the way the react in different situations. A dog with a good temperament can react to various situations calmly and will not be aggressive. The American Temperament Test Society holds an event a few times a year to collect data about different breeds temperaments and how friendly these dogs are (ATTS). The test consists of walking in an enclosed track where the dog will react to different strangers and noises. The percent of pit bulls that passed the temperament test is 87.4 percent. This is a shockingly high percent considering that many people think they are creatures from the devil. Pit bulls scored way higher than Dachshunds, 68.8 percent, and Collies, 80.6%. • 4. Disadvantages Of Elastomers 1.Segmented polyurethanes Segmented polyurethanes are a broad class of polymers whose properties range from those characteristic of tough plastics to very soft rubbers, depending on the soft segment length and concentration. Polyurethane elastomers are high quality engineering materials combining high elasticity with high hardness and low wear. It is very important to mention and understand, during working with polyurethanes that we dealing with two types of materials : plastics and elastomers , which have the identical manufacturing process. Elastomers are defined as materials that possessed high, reversible deformations. Crosslinking of elastomers obtain these reversibility of extension. In polyurethane elastomers crosslinking could be presented with two different natures of bonding as chemical as a physical. • 6. A Brief Note On The Earthquake Of Earthquake Abstract Earthquake engineering is a subject where a person can be overwhelmed with information but still crave for knowledge due to its unpredictable nature. Earthquakes are a natural repetitive occurrence on planet earth, which due to its devastating impact, have caused a lot of damage to structures and caused loss of life. Therefore engineers, scientists and geologists were required to take action and one of the many first steps was to identify the regions of seismic activity. The argument in this essay is not how to prevent earthquakes as that is out of the control of humans but how to minimise the damage and deaths caused by them by designing better buildings. The challenge to first achieve this goal was by engineers in America, where in 1906, in the state of California, due to the frequent earthquakes in the state, building design codes and safety standards were established. These design or seismic codes have helped to reduce the damages caused by earthquakes. Therefore the solution for people in active seismic zones is to adhere to the seismic codes strictly, designed by engineers in order to help strengthen buildings and reduce the loss of life when an earthquake occurs. The greatest number of earthquakes occurs in Asia, America, Caribbean Islands and Europe but according to Hyndman, D and Hyndman, D (2012), earthquakes do not actually cause the death of people but the falling debris and buildings do. This is why it is important for engineers to use ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Detective Mccauley Observation On March 13, 2017, I took part in a ride along with Detective Jason McCauley. Before going into this ride along I did not know what kind of person I would be with as well as what kind of events I would be experiencing. When I was first met detective McCauley he came off a very nice person. He had a very quiet demeanor, which I learned was helpful in the work he did. Detective McCauley is not an officer that is usually on patrol, but he investigates crimes that happen on or around campus. Although he does not say much, he does listen and that is a good trait because of the line of work he is in. In the lecture, Chapter 7 Slides it showed a pyramid of the early stages of the criminal justice process. I could witness four of the stages which was Criminal Offense, contact with police, filing report, and the arrest. Although I witnessed it from the polices view. • 9. Long Beach Appraisal Everyone involved in selling and buying of real estate in Long Beach has some unconditional interest in appraisals. The result of an appraisal has something or the other to do with what the buyer, seller, realtor, and lender are expecting out of the sale. If a property has been valued quite low by the appraiser, the seller would then be needed to lower the market price he or she had set. If we consider a Realtor in this case, it would mean a significant dip in commission. On the other hand, a high valuation of a property may result in the buyer having to pay a lot more than its true worth. In this situation, a realtor may receive high or low commission, depending on the final selling/buying price of the property. With these situations, you... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If you are considering to hire someone to do this job, you should make sure that you approach a local appraiser, having a number of appraisal years in his locker. If you reach someone who has recently received the license, you may have to bear some frustrations in getting what you expect. However, an experienced appraiser will save you from having sleepless nights. This is why you should always work with an appraiser who comes with all the credentials. The appraiser may be hired, either by the buyer or the seller; for different reasons, of course. A buyer would hire an appraiser to have an accurate assessment of property, its price, and mortgage options. On the other hand, a seller would do the hiring to know the value of his or her property. Based on the valuation and the areas of improvement, the seller can make amendments to his or her property, if viable. This will help the seller in coming up to a maximum price that he or she can get after selling his or her property. The seller would work to get the most of his or her property and the buyer would look to pay as least as possible. In all of this, it is very important not to forget the real reason why appraisals are done. An appraisal report features many things, most of which are very hard to understand for a common buyer or seller. Good appraisers will ensure that they go that extra mile and make buyers or sellers understand things that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Organizational Management, Leadership, And Leadership Introduction The group submission for this week is a summary of five topics from Resilient Leaders that relate to Organizational Management and Leadership. The narrative concludes with three scriptures that group four feels sum up the responsibilities of a leader. Five Topics The five topics that group four chose from Resilient Leaders that relate to Organizational Management and Leadership are selfless service, integrity, leading by example, vision, and traits of wise leadership. Selfless Service. Dees (2013) stated, resilient leadership is selfless service over time from a platform of character and competence. Selfless service (servant leadership) is an important concept to Organization Management and Leadership. Selfless service is the foundation of servant leadership. Selfless service is one of the most important traits of a good leader. For an organization to thrive, it is important for a leader to serve their followers and place their needs before his needs. Servant leadership has a profound impact on employee empowerment by fostering an environment of empathy, awareness, healing, listening, stewardship and community awareness (Murari Gupta, 2012). A selfless service leader can have mediating effects on both public service motivation and corporate social responsibility that assist the organization from both a community and goal attainment perspective (Tuan, 2016). Political Dimensions Of Us Immigration Policies Political Dimensions of US Immigration Policies Japanese and Chinese Immigration and Exclusionary Immigration Policies Anti immigrant driven exclusive immigration policies barred Japanese and Chinese immigrants from immigrating to the United States and accessing the privileges of citizenship. Through the Immigration Acts of 1917, 1921, and 1924, the US government insured that Japanese and Chinese immigrants could not immigrate to the United States by creating an artificial geographic area or Asiatic Barred Zone that denied entry to any immigrants who migrated from this area most likely Chinese or Japanese (Lee 2003, 39). Despite their initial economic adversity, German and Italian immigrants accessed more privileges because of their increasingly perceived whiteness among native Born Americans. As I have mentioned, the ideas of American immigration therefore refer to immigrants who conform to the Crevecoeurian Myth. Reconciling the Paradox of US Immigration Despite the radicalized economic, social, and political dimensions of US immigration, policymakers like President Obama continue to sustain a singular view of US immigration that I have argued is oriented around a white and European immigration experience. By revealing how Chinese, Japanese, Italian and German immigrants have faced economic, social, and political adversities, I have disproved President Obama s claim that the United States has been a beacon to the world to these immigrant groups. President Obama s claim is particularly problematic because it highlights how the paradox of immigration has diminished the severity and scope of United States exclusive immigration policies. As policymakers begin to address the current issues of the American immigration system, I argue that this objective is difficult to achieve. I feel that it was the best choice that the school board could have made by upholding wearing of uniforms. School outfits cut down on wrongdoing in schools, and it additionally helps improving training, since students are not stressed over what others are wearing. Many people who send their kids to non public schools need to pay the educational cost and uniform costs. The measure of cash a parent would spend on standard garments is significantly more costly than purchasing uniforms. • 13. Morality And Ethical Behaviour Within The Human Population Morality and ethical behaviour within the human population is vital in order to conceive a healthy society. Although throughout history, morals and ethics have been used interchangeably, they are in fact not one in the same. Morality is within oneself and develops over a period of time as a result of meeting and resolving moral issues as they come forth, whereas ethicsis essentially a moral compass, or a set of rules one follows throughout the course of their life (Crebert, Patrick, Cragnolini, 2004). From a personal perspective, I believe each individual has several distinguishing moral codes they live by, even if they may not distinctly know it. Not only do employees, consumers and shareholders feel misguided and lied to, but also society as a whole. Truthfulness and transparency are fundamental concepts of morality that I use to define my life, and should have been executed in the case of Volkswagen. If they were transparent with their fundamental operations from the beginning, these corporate lies would never have occurred. The Volkswagen scandal has caused, and will further cause, many consequences affecting major associated parties. Consequences of this scandal extenuate to the individual, organisational and social components of society. The individual consequences caused are mainly comprised of consumers and how they have been affected. Consumers, overall, have felt that they have been blatantly lied to and misguided by Volkswagen (Northern Daily Leader, 2015). This demonstrates that Volkswagen seemingly do not possess the moral trait of transparency amongst its operations with various stakeholders. • 14. The American Of Revolt Against Great Britain There were many reasons that the American colonies decided to revolt against Great Britain, but some of the more major causes of the American revolution were the banning of arms , the very unpopular Stamp Act, the Declaratory Act, and the Boston Tea Port Acts. Another unpopular Act enforced on the colonies, by His Majesty of Great Britain, was the now famous Stamp Act. The Stamp Act was a set of laws created by the King and parliament, saying that the American colonists had to pay more taxes than the people in Great Britain were paying, as a way to pay off the cost of the Seven Years War. This Act was upsetting to the colonists because they didn t get the chance to have a say in wether or not they were okay with/wanted such large taxes being imposed upon them. This can be seen in Document A, when the colonists wrote in a letter to the king that it is inseparably essential to the freedom of a people, and the undoubted right of Englishmen, that no taxes be imposed on them, but with their own consent, given personally, or by their representatives. This quote shows that the colonists did not agree with the taxation, or at least not without them being represented in Great Britain. The King placing all of these taxes on the American colonies made them feel as if they were not being treated as actual Englishmen, but rather as the outcasts and criminals that no one else wanted. This is evident in the letter written to the King, when the colonies say that His Majesty s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One aspect of American masculinity is their need to satisfy their own needs, which includes them satisfying their need for sexual interaction. So while the American soldiers were away from home, they relied on the Vietnamese civilian women to satisfy this need. This urge of American soldiers to seek sexual interactions with the Vietnamese is demonstrated by a quote of a former Vietnamese prostitute. In an article that describes a vocational training center for young girls recovering in South Vietnam, a former prostitute says I used to earn 2,000 piasters [about $4.50] a night in Qui Nhon [...] with the Americans I could demand even more. When I leave here and join a hairdresser s it ll take me a week to earn the same. This former prostitute reveals the desperate urge of American soldiers to satisfy their sexual desires because they are willing to overpay for a prostitute s services. American masculinity is the reason that interaction between these two groups took place. The American service member had a desire for sexual interaction, and the Vietnamese civilian women were able to satisfy this desire. This is not a result of race, as this would imply that the Americans sought out Vietnamese because of their race. The reason Vietnamese women were chosen to satisfy the Americans desire was because of their ease of access. Vietnamese prostitutes were the easiest way for American soldiers to appease their sex drive, so they took advantage of this opportunity. Because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Suddenly, people were laid off their jobs, couldn t buy things they had once not thought twice about, and struggled to afford food for their families. • 17. Grieving Styles In Ordinary People Society and culture have created scripts (i.e., social norms) that dictate the ways in which we are to grieve. These scripts also prescribe the unique ways in which men and women are expected to respond to grief. Specifically, men s grief scripts suggest that men will resolve to grieve in solitude as a demonstration of their self reliance. Men may also have muted emotional response and expressed emotions are typically in the form of anger or guilt (Martin Doka, 2011). Comparatively, women s grief scripts suggest that women are more emotive and seek support from others to help cope with loss (Martin Doka, 2011). However, the characters in Ordinary People do not conform to the stereotypical gender grief scripts and instead reflect the different grieving styles captured in Martin and Doka s (2011) grieving styles continuum. Martin and Doka (2011) conceptualizes grieving styles ranging on a continuum from intuitive to instrumental. Grieving styles reflect individuals ability to adapt to loss and are distinguished by their use of cognitive and affective domains to process grief. Based on Conrad s character in the movie, he could be described as having more of an intuitive grieving style. This style of grieving utilizes more of the affective domain and uses little of the cognitive (Martin Doka, 2011). For the intuitive griever, grief is characterized by the experience of painful feelings. The feelings of guilt and sadness were those that Conrad experienced the most. After ... • 18. American Workers and Labor Unions in The Twenties In the period immediately following World War I, American workers struggled to earn a living as prices rose and wages stagnated, forcing them to seek union support. Labor unions endeavored to represent the working class against their employers and corporations, who refused to increase wages or improve working conditions. In order to combat the capitalist s immense political clout, unions made their voice heard through strikes. After the war, capitalists linked unions to the mounting communist threat, stressing that strikes undermined capitalismand threatened a republican form of government. As a result, government sided with capital against labor unions and the struggle of the American workers, who had no voice against corporations. This struggle can be exemplified in a correspondence between union leader, Samuel Gompersand bishop William Quayle, published in The Twenties in Contemporary Commentary: Labor Capital . The letters demonstrate that in the 1920 s, labor unions were necessary as a means to overcome capitalist greed and enhanced the ideals of democracy by empowering the working class. Unimpeded in their pursuit of maximum profits to the detriment of the workers, capitalists and their oppressive methods made labor unions necessary. While it is different from many other forms of government it gives each U.S. citizen the ability to speak their mind on who they believe their country should be governed by and what laws they should be governed under. In making these decisions citizens generally take a side, Republican or Democrat. Republican and Democratic parties are two of the nations oldest political parties however, when they originated the Republican party was the Democratic partythat we have today and the Democratic party was the Conservative party we have today. To put that in simpler terms, the Democratic party were the Confederates in the civil war while the Republican party was the Union. Democrats of that time favored a limited government, supported the idea of manifest destiny, and fought for the continuation of slavery whereas the Republican party of that time opposed slavery, favored government policies such as nation currency, high tariffs, or increased funding on the university system. The switch to the parties we know today is said to have happened gradually between 1872. The Secret Sharer Symbolism Essay The novella, The Secret Sharer, by Joseph Conrad contains many great examples of symbolism, strong and influential thematic elements, and tones of mystery and loneliness. From the beginning of the story, the narrator uses the setting to explain the situation. The narrator illustrates a picture of a captain far away from home with the crew that s not appropriately fond of him. This separation gives the reader an idea of how lonely he is on the ship. The crew dislikes him and feels unsafe around him, this makes it hard for the captain to build a sense of trust and have strong friendships. The crew is very hesitant to do what the captain says to do. The captain is properly stressed by his surroundings, the crew, making his judgment very dicey. In the region, agriculture was very unstable and many people made their living from challenging and detested trades such as disposing of human waste, mining, and producing charcoal. The lowliest trades frequently involved a minority group, the Hakkas, and tensions between them and the majority were rising. Problems may have been enhanced by sudden changes in the opium trade and reactions to the cultural and economic impact of the Americans and Europeans in Canton. The leader of the movement, Hong Xiuquan, was a slightly delusional practitioner who, after learning about Christian teachings, came to believe that he was the younger brother of Jesus and God had called upon him to save mankind. Xiuquan came from a Hakka background and competed in the provincial Confucian examinations, desiring for a place in the government. Unfortunately for him, he failed the examinations repeatedly. He spent some time in Canton, where he met both Chinese and American Protestant missionaries and he was inspired by their teachings. This led to his own interpretations of the Christian message. Xiuquan attracted a community of believers, mostly the Hakkas. Local loyalty to the Taipings spread quickly, and as their numbers started to multiply, they began to enlarge their area. Possessing that control would allow you to direct how the population spends their money or even who they like and dislike in politics. The mainstream media news outlets have this control and are expected to give us information that is unbiased, fair, and not meant to sway our opinion. The topic I will be exploring is bias in the mainstream news media and how it affects their viewers. This is an important topic in the field of communication because it has such a great impact on any country that uses mass media to disseminate information. The information can be given to the viewers with a certain twist to intentionally shape their view of an event, or it can be unintentionally bias just by the tone and manner they are reporting on the event. I am going to research how mass media news outlets influence the viewers opinion, and what goes into picking the news stories covered. These are controversial topics to get into, but important to consider. They can have a very big impact on things like elections for a political office, support or dislike of a certain group, or can sway your opinion of who is the hero in a certain story. It was also a time of recording information and countless people wrote during this time about the different aspects of their country. Religion was an important part of the people s daily life, seeing that it determined their afterlife. There are several stories and beliefs available about this time period that are used for current references on how exactly the religious culture worked. In particular, Giovanni Boccaccios Decameron, which he wrote as a series of short stories about the religious culture during the 1350 s, which was not long after the Black Death. His series of fictional short stories gave people a different side of the story and how people truly regarded religionduring this time. Currently, people who read these excerpts can compose inferences on how religious culture was back then and it gives a different thought process, seeing that while it is not particularly true, it shows a different side of the religious culture. Specifically, the story he tells us in this excerpt shows us a great deal about the religious culture of Italy during that time and how seriously they regarded God and his forgiveness, so much that one man lived a horrid life and still managed to gain forgiveness of the church and be buried there. In my opinion the only way to take down this organization is to begin to treat it like the state that it is. ISIS has not only gained territory in Syria, Iraq and Istanbul but according to New York Times columnist, Tim Arango, ISIS is building a capacity to govern. In 2014, ISIS formally informed the world on their establishment of a caliphate. This caliphate is governed under Islamic beliefs and rulers. They have begun issuing identification cards for residents, promulgating fishing guidelines to preserve stocks, and requiring that cars carry tool kits for emergencies (Arango). Believe it or not, ISIS has been a state for two years, regardless of their lack of legitimacy, their consistent threat of violence against any of those who oppose their beliefs allows them not only to get things done, but get them done efficiently. • 40. Environmental Waste And Its Effects On Carbon Emissions To get around the issue of these powerful companies being upset from the negative financial impact from the move to zero carbon, a shift must be made in governmental policy. Perhaps the solution may not be punishing companies for producing too much pollution, but rewarding companies for producing much less. In this way, the market for carbon emissions will eventually disappear and naturally profit seeking companies will aim to pursue activities, hunt for new strategies, and invest in infrastructure and equipment that result in lower carbon emissions. Beyond the simple reward proposition, however, greener policies often result in higher long term profitability for companies nonetheless. Environmental waste is often the best proxy for identifying and eliminating economic waste, meaning that many companies are currently increasing their profitability while simultaneously following a strategy in pursuance of zero carbon emissions. In fact, notoriously profit focused companies like Tesco and WalMart have announced their intentions to pursue environmental action not out of moral motivation, but in clear quests for greater profitability. The reason for their actions is the simple recognition that environmental and economic interests are often closely aligned. Nearly 50 separate studies from the Economist Intelligence Unit, Goldman Sachs, AT Kearney, Deloitte, MIT Sloan, Harvard and others show that companies that commit to environmentally responsible goals, particularly ... • 41. The Agenda Setting Theory On The Public Agenda Abstract The history of the agenda setting theory goes back over 50 years to when it was introduced in a 1972 edition of Public Opinion Quarterly by Drs. Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw. It was first developed as a means of studying the 1968 American presidential election as it relates to the most important issues determined by the news media and the most important issues determined by the 100 residents of Chapel Hill, North Carolina (McCombs Shaw, 1972). Still relevant today, the agenda setting theory explains the influence of the media agenda on the public agenda. In a comprehensive analysis of the agenda setting theory, agenda setting includes three levels or psychological processes: basic agenda setting, attribute agenda setting and network agenda setting. History of Agenda Setting Theory The media s power in influencing public opinion has sparked the theory that we now know as agenda setting. In 1922 this concept was first investigated by newspaper columnist Walter Lippman (Wahl Jorgensen and Hanitzsch, 2009, pp.147). Since then Drs. Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw have coined what we now know as the agenda setting theory. Their research of the 1968 presidential election of the Republican nominee Richard Nixon and the Democratic nominee Hubert Humphrey proved groundbreaking. Before the agenda setting theory, assumptions were that certain behaviors and attitudes were results of the way information was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This possibly explains the contradiction of Mordred s position in the two pieces. In Malory s work, I got the feeling that Mordred was a big, burly, knight that loved a good fight. Yet in Camelot, Mordred is a devilish looking, puny, scheming, young man who turns down Arthur s offer of knighthood because he s just not quot;that type. quot; Mordred turns the knights against each other which destroys the Round Table and brings King Arthur s entire world crashing down around his ears. A Greek astronomer named Ptolemy agreed with Aristotle theory and made a model that provided a decent accurate system for predicting the places where heavenly bodies in the sky were located. His model was accepted and adopted generally. But then a simpler model made by a Polish priest, Nicholas Copernicus was suggested. His idea was that the sun was still at the center and that the earth and the planets moved in circular orbits around the sun. Two astronomers took this idea seriously Johannes Kepler and Galileo Galilei and they started publicly supporting the Copernican theory. The death of the Aristotelian/Ptolemaic theory came in 1609 when Galileo started to look at the sky with a telescope. When he looked at Jupiter he saw that it was by a lot of small satellites or moon that orbited around it. Johannes then changed Copernicus s theory a bit by suggesting that the planets move in ellipses instead of circles. An explanation came when Isaac Newton published his Philosophiae Naturalis Principia mathematica in 1687. In it he provided a theory of how bodies move in space and time. He also made the complicated mathematics needed to analyze those motions. Then questions were raised like whether the universe had a beginning in time and whether it is limited in space.
