This document summarizes research on diesel exhaust exposures among professional drivers. It discusses several studies that have found high exposures and health effects among drivers such as taxi, truck, and bus drivers. The document outlines a new study called DEMiSt that aims to better characterize exposures for 200 drivers across sectors and identify strategies to reduce risks. Preliminary results suggest taxi drivers have the highest exposures while ventilation settings significantly impact levels. Reducing "pollution spikes" may substantially lower exposure. The study also examines exposures between electric and diesel taxis.
1) Studies from multiple organizations have found that natural gas sites in the Barnett Shale region, including in Fort Worth, are not emitting harmful levels of compounds like benzene and carbon disulfide in the air.
2) A one-mile setback for natural gas sites is not necessary according to these studies, as pollutant concentrations drop to background levels within 100 meters of sites.
3) School districts should not wait to lease mineral rights because once an energy company finalizes a drilling unit, they will no longer have the opportunity to participate in that unit.

Exposure to ambient air pollution-does it affect semen quality and the level ...Vernando8
This study examined the relationship between exposure to ambient air pollution and semen quality and reproductive hormone levels in 327 men attending an infertility clinic in Poland. Semen and hormone samples were collected and analyzed. Air pollution data for particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide were obtained from monitoring stations near subjects' homes for the 90 days prior to sampling. Statistical analysis found significant associations between higher levels of air pollutants and worse sperm morphology as well as lower testosterone levels. Exposure to particulate matter was also associated with increased levels of immature sperm chromatin. The study provides evidence that ambient air pollution may adversely impact male reproductive health outcomes. Further research with more precise exposure assessment is still needed.
- Air pollution causes 6.5 million premature deaths per year, nearly half from outdoor sources. 80% of urban populations are exposed to unsafe air pollution levels according to WHO guidelines.
- Small particulate matter can penetrate deep into lungs and cause health risks like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and cardiac issues. Biological mechanisms on the cellular level also contribute to health risks.
- Numerous studies and growing evidence over decades show relationships between increased air pollution exposure and mortality, hospitalizations, and lost work days. However, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence of health impacts.

Health effects of PM2.5. Is there anything new to add? - Dr Ian MudwayIES / IAQM
This document summarizes the key findings from numerous studies on the health effects of PM2.5 published between 2006-2019. It notes that thousands of new health studies and reviews have found that PM2.5 contributes significantly to the global burden of disease, with effects seen even below WHO guideline values. Specific topics covered include the impacts of primary combustion pollutants like diesel and biomass burning, the effects of prenatal exposures and impacts across the lifespan, and the use of alternative pollution metrics like black carbon to help disentangle health effects. The document questions whether a mass-based approach or targeted actions on specific components and sources may be most effective for improving health outcomes.
The document summarizes a summer internship that Juliann Chen completed at the Health Effects Institute in Boston. The Health Effects Institute is an independent non-profit organization that funds research on health effects of air pollution, especially from vehicles. During the internship, Chen helped review studies on health effects of air pollution in Asian cities and identified gaps where more research is needed. The internship provided experience in conducting literature reviews and epidemiology studies to understand impacts of air pollution.
This document summarizes air pollutants and their health effects. It discusses how air pollutants can exacerbate asthma and COPD as well as cause acute lower respiratory infections. Susceptible groups include those with extreme ages, preexisting cardiopulmonary disease, and lower socioeconomic status who face greater exposure. Primary pollutants like SO2 and particulate matter are directly emitted while secondary pollutants like ozone form in the air. Outdoor sources include industry, agriculture and automobiles. Indoor sources include cooking, heating and smoking. The document also reviews the mechanisms of harm, interactions between pollutants and allergens, and effects of individual pollutants like particulate matter, diesel exhaust and ozone.
The document discusses approaches to detoxifying heavy metals, focusing on chelation therapy using CaNa2-EDTA suppositories (Detoxamin). It notes 99% of 200 patients tested showed toxic heavy metal levels. Detoxamin is described as a safe, non-invasive way to chelate metals like mercury, lead and cadmium. Clinical trials show Detoxamin effectively increases metal excretion compared to intravenous chelation.
This document discusses eliminating occupational cancer caused by chemical exposures. It provides estimates of the current cancer burden from past occupational exposures in the UK. Exposures to many known carcinogens like asbestos, silica, and diesel exhaust have significantly declined over time due to improved controls and safety practices. However, cancers like mesothelioma and lung cancer still result from earlier exposures. Priority carcinogens are identified that can be further addressed through continued exposure monitoring and prevention efforts from government, industry, and unions to one day reduce occupational cancer rates below a public health risk threshold.
Routes to Clean Air 2015 - Dr Ian MudwayIES / IAQM
Dr Ian Mudway studies the health effects of air pollution. His research focuses on additives and chemicals found in particulate matter from sources like nitrogen dioxides, ozone, diesel exhaust, and volatile organic compounds. His work shows associations between exposure to traffic-related air pollution and increased mortality, exacerbation of asthma, and reduced lung growth in children. While past exposures correlated with health impacts, more research is needed on contemporary pollution levels. Controlling pollution, especially near vulnerable groups, and transitioning to cleaner fuels could help reduce disease burden and extend lifespans.
This document presents a case study of sick building syndrome (SBS) in the underground Chandi Chowk metro station in New Delhi, India. It identifies various air pollutants present including particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, bioaerosols, and carbon dioxide. Exposure assessments were conducted to quantify pollutant concentrations and durations. Questionnaires were used to assess SBS symptoms in workers. Data gaps were identified that limit establishing dose-response relationships between pollutants and symptoms. Risk management strategies and communication are recommended.
STEP Conference 2015 - Colin Ramsay, Health Protection Scotland - Improving o...STEP_scotland
This document summarizes key findings from a study on air pollution and health messages. The study found that air pollution has various health impacts but the relationships are complex. While air pollution contributes to health issues, it usually exacerbates existing conditions rather than being a sole cause of death. The study also found that current messages about air pollution may not be effective at changing behavior and that a focus on positive messages around active transportation could be more successful. It concludes with recommendations around improving health messages on this topic.
The document summarizes the work of the IARC Monographs Program in evaluating potential carcinogens. Over 950 agents have been evaluated, with 110 found to be carcinogenic to humans. National health agencies use the Monographs to prevent exposure to known or suspected carcinogens. Recent Monographs have increasingly incorporated mechanistic data to identify carcinogens, even in the absence of cancer studies. Future work includes further analyzing concordance between human and animal tumors, key carcinogenic mechanisms, and identifying priorities for evaluation using advisory groups.

The document discusses shale gas exploration in the UK and its potential impacts on air quality and climate change. It provides historical context on how air pollution has negatively impacted society. There are concerns that shale gas development could increase levels of nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and methane - a potent greenhouse gas. Proper regulation and monitoring are needed to understand and mitigate the total air quality effects of developing this source of natural gas.

STEP Summer Seminar 2017 - Mark Miller, University of Edinburgh - Health Effe...STEP_scotland
Air pollution is a major global problem, causing millions of deaths per year. Small particles in air pollution are especially harmful to cardiovascular health. Studies show that inhaled nanoparticles can enter the bloodstream and accumulate in areas of vascular disease, impairing blood vessel and heart function. This may be due to oxidative stress, inflammation, or direct effects on cells from inhaled particles. More research is needed to fully understand the biological mechanisms and reduce the health impacts of air pollution worldwide.
The document summarizes research on the health effects of air pollution. It discusses:
1) The Health Effects Institute which conducts impartial research on vehicle and other emissions.
2) Numerous health effects of different air pollutants like particulate matter and ozone. Studies in Asia find increases in respiratory and cardiovascular illness associated with air pollution.
3) The Public Health and Air Pollution in Asia program which is conducting new epidemiological studies to better understand impacts in Asian cities and inform policies.
This document discusses diesel emissions and their health effects. It summarizes recent studies that found strong evidence of a link between diesel exhaust exposure and increased lung cancer risk among miners and truck drivers. Even relatively low exposures of 0.1 mg/m3 per year for 10 years were found to more than double lung cancer risk. The document also outlines strategies for measuring and controlling diesel particulate matter exposure to protect worker health.

ViewShift: Hassle-free Dynamic Policy Enforcement for Every Data LakeWalaa Eldin Moustafa
Dynamic policy enforcement is becoming an increasingly important topic in today’s world where data privacy and compliance is a top priority for companies, individuals, and regulators alike. In these slides, we discuss how LinkedIn implements a powerful dynamic policy enforcement engine, called ViewShift, and integrates it within its data lake. We show the query engine architecture and how catalog implementations can automatically route table resolutions to compliance-enforcing SQL views. Such views have a set of very interesting properties: (1) They are auto-generated from declarative data annotations. (2) They respect user-level consent and preferences (3) They are context-aware, encoding a different set of transformations for different use cases (4) They are portable; while the SQL logic is only implemented in one SQL dialect, it is accessible in all engines.

Open Source Contributions to Postgres: The Basics POSETTE 2024ElizabethGarrettChri
Postgres is the most advanced open-source database in the world and it's supported by a community, not a single company. So how does this work? How does code actually get into Postgres? I recently had a patch submitted and committed and I want to share what I learned in that process. I’ll give you an overview of Postgres versions and how the underlying project codebase functions. I’ll also show you the process for submitting a patch and getting that tested and committed.

3. Particulate Matter and Health
• PM has been linked with health outcomes:
hospitalization, mortality, decreased lung function,
cardiac events
• WHO estimates ~800,000 premature deaths per year
• Evidence of both short-term (acute) and long-term
(chronic) effects of exposure to ambient PM
• Much recent work has examined ambient PM mass
(PM10, PM2.5, PM10-2.5) indicator
4. • There is strong evidence that ambient PM is
associated with mortality and morbidity
• What should we do about it? How can we
intervene to improve health?
• Target sources of PM that are most harmful to
human health
• How do we identify sources of ambient PM?
What’s Next?

10. Problems
• Current source apportionment methods are applied
on an ad hoc, highly tweaked, basis and are
difficult to scale to a region or nation
• Source apportionment models are typically
informed by investigator’s local knowledge
• No reproducible way to combine information across
locations to gain power when estimating health
effects (multi-site studies)
11. Incorporating New Data
Sources on Pollution Sources
Component Data Source
Particulate Matter EPA Air Quality System (AQS)
PM Chemical Constituents EPA Chemical Speciation Network
PM Source Profiles EPA SPECIATE Database
PM Source Emissions EPA National Emissions Inventory
20. Model Fitting
• We use Markov chain Monte Carlo to simulate from
the posterior distribution of the unknown
parameters
• Adaptive MCMC approach of Haario et al (2001)
• Use data from SPECIATE and NEI to calibrate the
prior distributions
• Constraints placed on profile matrix based on what
is known about composition of specific sources
21.
22.
23. Estimating Health Effects
• For individual cities, estimated source time series can
be plugged into regression models with health
outcomes
• For multi-site studies, source determination cannot be a
manual process (not reproducible)
• Need automatic method to combine information across
a region
• Current approaches assume pollution sources are the
same everywhere
24. US EPA Chemical Speciation Network
• 85 monitors, 24 constituents
Medicare cohort (1999—2010)
• CVD hospitalizations for 63 counties
25. SHARE
• A method for estimating health effects of sources
SHared Across a REgion
• Sources are estimated at individual locations and
health effects estimated
• Sources are matched across locations via population
value decomposition (Crainiceanu et al. 2011)
• Health effects combined for common sources via
hierarchical modeling
28. Summary
• Bayesian source apportionment model can
integrate information from 3 national databases
• Data on sources and profiles can be used to
constrain the problem and to construct informative
prior distributions
• SHARE method can be used to automatically
combine health effects of estimated sources across
a region
