Networking Presentation at VACRAO Conference Dec 2016Michael Camden
This is a presentation that I gave last week at the Virginia Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (VACRAO) Conference. If it were a college course, it could be called Networking 101 (NET101). It is basic in some cases, but still provides great tips and solid reminders when conducting business networking and outreach.

Business networking can be conducted in a local business community, or on a larger scale via the Internet
– LinkedIn is the main online business network, but Google+, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube and Facebook are also widely used
Professionals who wish to leverage their presentation skills with the urgency of physically being present attend general and exclusive events.
Many professionals tend to prefer face-to-face networking over online based networking because the potential for higher quality relationships
are possible. Many individuals also prefer face-to-face because people tend to prefer actually knowing and meeting with whom they intend to do
business. Face to face business networking is often facilitated by referral networking clubs.
Join the right networks – where the people you want to meet congregate
Plan in advance – if you don’t know where you are going….
Know the culture – you have 2 seconds to create the right impression
Get organised – have everything you need to hand (glasses, pen, cards…)
Bring business cards!
Don’t push your card – what to do if somebody else does?
Relationship 1st, elevator pitch 2nd – the ‘you game’, build rapport
Seek out valuable contacts – read the attendance list in advance
Debrief – did it work? If not, why not?
FOLLOW UP – otherwise it’s a waste of time
Have your networking tools with you all the time – name badge (on the right), business cards, pen, paper/notebook
Set goals – how many people will you talk to?
Act like a host – get there early, introduce people if you can
Ask open questions (the 5 Ws) – and actively listen
Give a referral – connect people to those you know who might be good contacts for them
Rehearse your elevator pitch – no more than 60 seconds, ask if they want to hear more
Ask for a business card – and then give them yours
Make notes on the cards you receive – but make sure you ask first
Respect other people’s time – no more than 10 minutes with each person; they are there for the same reason as you; gain their agreement
to meet outside the event if you want to talk in more detail
FOLLOW UP – LinkedIn, email/phone call to arrange meeting
