2. Why networking?
• Networking is an active, dynamic
process that links people into
mutually beneficial relationships.
• It takes time to build. It is a 24/7
lifestyle.
• Connect and Connection are not
the same. It is not about Whom
you know but aboutWho knows
You?
3. Why networking?
• One acquires social capital and builds trust and
meaningful relationships through the right
conversations, actions, and value exchanges with the
right people.
• Value exchange means information, education,
mentorship, a resource, or a connection—literally, a
place where value is exchanged.
• Networking is as much an Art as a Science.
• Meeting New PeopleCreates NewOpportunities
5. Misconceptions of Networking
• Networking is mostly a waste of time.
• People are either naturally gifted at networking or they’re not, and it’s
generally difficult to change that.
• Networking is inherently self-serving or selfish.
• Relationships should form naturally.
• Networking is transactional in nature.
• Our strong ties are most valuable.
• Grab as many business cards as possible at an event.
• Takers are more successful than givers.
• My social media connections are my connections.
6. Why isConnecting becoming
more Important?
• World has gotten a billion times busier and noisier.
• So much social media
• There are so many conferences
• So many opportunities for meeting
• Society is overwhelmed by the overabundance of
noise versus signal.
• Customers and clients have become adept at
turning down unsolicited messages.
7. Why isConnecting becoming more
Important?
• Emails, ads, and direct mail can be thrown away
or turned off without a second thought.
• Important, meaningful
information/connections/value
exchanges/knowledge sharing will become
more important.
• Right access and social capital will exponentially
increase in value.
9. How to be effective in meetings?
• Every meeting go with a service attitude:
• How can I help this person(s)?
• What value I can bring to the table?
• How can I build a meaningful relationship?
• Do research about the people
• Listen more than you speak. Smile generously.
• Maintain eye contact with everyone & not only with person you are
comfortable with.
• Be energetic, have child-like curiosity and enjoy conversations.
• Do not use your phones in the meetings.
• Find out shared interests or common ground. Develop the art of small talk.
• After the meeting make it a point to take action ASAP.
• Have genuine interest and curiosity in people – help them succeed
10. How do I nurture existing
relationships
• Make calls every few months if in different cities.
• Send relevant messages/ voice notes periodically.
• Meet every few months.
• Organise get togethers and bring people who can add
value to each other.
• Discuss about progress in professional and personal lives.
• Try to find out ways in which you can help them.
• Invite them for lunch/ dinners at home and restaurants.
• Don’t meet them when you need them. Meet them when
you don’t need anything from them.
11. Where do I make new
connections?
Everywhere
• School/ College Alumni networks.
• New Courses
• Industry Conferences & Events
• Sporting Activities like golf, cricket, biking
• Volunteering Activities and joining clubs
• Professional associations such asYPO, EO, CII, FICCI etc.
• Seek out mentors and set up advisory boards.
• Identify centres of networks.
• Foster weak ties- Friend of friends.
12. Become effective at events
• Attend the event with a goal.
• Perfect the art of a 2-minute elevator pitch.
• Be an active listener.
• Show sincerity and Interest.
• Have meaningful conversations with few rather than
distributing business cards to everyone.
• Call/ sendWhatsApp message/e-mails within 24
hours.
• Convert the connect to a connection by having a
coffee/ lunch meeting within 1 to 2 weeks of the
event.
13. Law of Reciprocity
• The law of reciprocity validates the abundance mindset.
• Scarcity is an illusion.
• Be a generous giver.
• Qualify fast before connecting as your credibility is at stake
• Giver cannot, should not, and does not expect an immediate
return on her investment in another person’s gain.
• The way of reciprocity is not simply a quid pro quo; it’s providing
benefits (including referrals) to others in order to create strong
networking relationships that will eventually bring benefits
(especially referrals) to you, often in a very round-about way
rather than directly from the person you benefit.
• Don’t expect returns from the same person.
• Universe has way of paying back.
14. Summary
• Have genuine interest and curiosity in people – help them
succeed.
• Do prework (research)
• Focus on common ground
• Reframe your mind (“How can I help?”Vs. “I’m too busy” or
‘What is in there for me”)
• Develop strong listening skills & genuine smiles
• Know the takeaway for you and for them
• Do post work consistently (follow-up action)
• Express genuine gratitude for your time & help
