DEFINITION

          What is a Network ?
A computer network consist of two or more computers that
are linked together in order to share information and other
share resources.
The computers on a network may linked through cable,
telephone lines and satellites etc.
DEFINITION

          What is a Topology?
In networking, the term topology is the way of
connecting computers or nodes on a network.
The way in which computers or other devices
are connected in a network is called Network
Topology.
TYPES OF NETWORK TOPOLOGY
Three commonly used network topologies
are:-

    Bus network.

    Ring network.

    Star network.
STAR TOPOLOGY

All devices connect to a
central device, called
hub.

All data transferred
from one computer to
another passes through
hub.

          ADVANTAGE DISADVANTAGE

1) Easy to install and wire. 1) Requires more cable length
                                     than a linear topology.

2) If any node or cable fails, 2) If the hub or concentrator
other nodes are not effected. fails, nodes attached are
                                      disabled.
3) Easy to detect faults and to 3) More expensive than linear
remove parts. bus topologies because of
                                     the cost of the hubs.
BUS TOPOLOGY

All computers and devices
connected to central cable or bus.

The central cable is the backbone
cable.

The devices or nodes are attached
with the bus through interface
connecter.

          ADVANTAGE DISADVANTAGE

1) Easy to connect computer or 1) Entire network shuts down if
peripheral to a linear bus. there is a break in the main
                                       cable.
2) Requires less cable length 2) Terminators are required at
than a star topology. both ends of the backbone
                                       cable.

3) If one node fails, other nodes 3) Difficult to identify the
are not effected. problem if the entire network
                                       shuts down.
RING TOPOLOGY

In ring topology, each computer is
connected to the next computer
and the last is connected to the
first.
Data travels from device to
device around entire ring, in
one direction.

In this way, the last node
connects to the first to
complete the ring.

          ADVANTAGE DISADVANTAGE
1) It is less expensive than 1) Adding or removing a
   star topology. computer from network
                                         effects the whole networks.

2) It is easy to install and to 2) If any of the nodes fail then the
maintain. ring is broken and data cannot
                                        be transmitted successfully.
                                   3) It is difficult to troubleshoot
                                       the ring.
