This study evaluated the neurodevelopmental outcomes of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants with Candida infection by analyzing data from the Candida study and the NRN Generic Database. The study found that 31% of ELBW infants in the Candida study had Candida infection or late-onset non-Candida sepsis, and these infants had higher rates of neurodevelopmental impairment at 18 months compared to uninfected infants. Infants with Candida sepsis and/or meningitis were more likely to experience death or neurodevelopmental impairment than uninfected infants. Candida infection was associated with an increased risk of cerebral palsy and neurodevelopmental impairment.
