Rocks are naturally formed solids composed of minerals that make up Earth's crust. There are three main types of rocks - igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic - which form through different processes. Igneous rock forms when melted rock reaches the surface through volcanoes and cools. Sedimentary rock forms over time from compressed layers of sediment eroded from other rocks by weathering and water/wind erosion. Rocks are constantly changing form through the rock cycle as they are weathered, eroded, deposited, buried, heated, melted, and cooled over millions of years.
