1. What percentage is 32 out of 800?
   32 / 800 = 4 / 100 = 4%

4. In a pocket of oranges, 8 are rotten and 24 are
still fine. Work out what percentage of the total
   number of oranges is rotten.

  Total number of oranges = 8 + 24 = 32
  Percentage rotten apples = 8 / 32 = ¼ = 25%

1. Calculate
  – 42 – 2 x 7 + 8 = 36
  – 22 + 48 ÷ 4 – 5 =29
  – 50 – (4 – 1) = 45
  – 6 x (2 + 4) = 36
  – 600 ÷ (35 –5) = 20
  – 26 – 2 x 8 + 8 = 18
  – 12 + 26 ÷ 2 –5 = 20

1. The word problems in this activity deal with
the logical use of four basic operations of
   arithmetic.
  a. In a factory there are 285 workers. On a certain day
there are 105 men and 75 women working. How
many workers were absent on that day?

            Total workers = 285
            Workers present = 105 + 75 = 180
            Workers absent = 285 – 180 = 105

a. In the year 2007, there were 20 485 learners
enrolled in a certain FET programme throughout
South Africa. If 16 626 of them passed, how many
    failed?
Learners failed = Total learners – learners passed
  = 20485 – 16 626
  = 3859

e. When a certain number is increased by 47 676 it
becomes 100 000. Find that number.
  100 000 – 47 676 = 52 324

a. Joe has R987. Beverley has R25 more than Joe. If
Petra has R376 less than Joe, how much have the
   three people altogether?
     Beverly            = R987 + R25
                        = R1 012

     Petra              = R987 – R376
                        = R611

     Total              = Joe + Beverly + Petra
                        = R987 + R1 012 + R611
                        = R2 610

a. A nurse has 12m of cotton material which she
wants to cut into equal pieces of 75 cm long each.
How mean pieces of material does she get? The
material is 1m wide. She will cut the 75cm long
pieces into strips 10 cm wide. How many strips will
   she eventually have?

    No of pieces = 12m ÷ 0.75 = 16 strips

    No of strips = 16 x (100cm / 10cm)
                 = 16 x 10
                 = 160 strips

  • 2. Self Assessment Pg 20 1. What percentage is 32 out of 800? 32 / 800 = 4 / 100 = 4% 4. In a pocket of oranges, 8 are rotten and 24 are still fine. Work out what percentage of the total number of oranges is rotten. Total number of oranges = 8 + 24 = 32 Percentage rotten apples = 8 / 32 = ¼ = 25% Mathematical Literacy Future Managers 2
  • 3. 1. Express 4/5 as a percentage 4/5 = 4 ÷ 5 x 100 = 80% 4. Calculate 25% of 200kg = 200kg x 25 ÷ 100 = 50kg 7. Calculate 45% of R6 500 = R6 500 x 45 ÷ 100 = R2 925 Mathematical Literacy Future Managers 3
  • 4. 1. A discount of 15% is given on demonstration model new cars. What will the discount be on a car originally costing R150 000? Size of discount R150 000 x 15 / 100 =R22 500 Mathematical Literacy Future Managers 4
  • 5. Self Assessment Pg 33 1. Calculate – 42 – 2 x 7 + 8 = 36 – 22 + 48 ÷ 4 – 5 =29 – 50 – (4 – 1) = 45 – 6 x (2 + 4) = 36 – 600 ÷ (35 –5) = 20 – 26 – 2 x 8 + 8 = 18 – 12 + 26 ÷ 2 –5 = 20 Mathematical Literacy Future Managers 5
  • 6. 1. The word problems in this activity deal with the logical use of four basic operations of arithmetic. a. In a factory there are 285 workers. On a certain day there are 105 men and 75 women working. How many workers were absent on that day? Total workers = 285 Workers present = 105 + 75 = 180 Workers absent = 285 – 180 = 105 Mathematical Literacy Future Managers 6
  • 7. a. In the year 2007, there were 20 485 learners enrolled in a certain FET programme throughout South Africa. If 16 626 of them passed, how many failed? Learners failed = Total learners – learners passed = 20485 – 16 626 = 3859 e. When a certain number is increased by 47 676 it becomes 100 000. Find that number. 100 000 – 47 676 = 52 324 Mathematical Literacy Future Managers 7
  • 8. a. Joe has R987. Beverley has R25 more than Joe. If Petra has R376 less than Joe, how much have the three people altogether? Beverly = R987 + R25 = R1 012 Petra = R987 – R376 = R611 Total = Joe + Beverly + Petra = R987 + R1 012 + R611 = R2 610 Mathematical Literacy Future Managers 8
  • 9. a. A nurse has 12m of cotton material which she wants to cut into equal pieces of 75 cm long each. How mean pieces of material does she get? The material is 1m wide. She will cut the 75cm long pieces into strips 10 cm wide. How many strips will she eventually have? No of pieces = 12m ÷ 0.75 = 16 strips No of strips = 16 x (100cm / 10cm) = 16 x 10 = 160 strips Mathematical Literacy Future Managers 9
  • 10. Summative Assessment 1. Give the values of the numbers that the digits printed in red represent: – 128 94540 – 542 500 – 62 565 2 000 – 59 246 50 000 – 238 8 – 94,625 20 – 12,183 3 Mathematical Literacy Future Managers 10
  • 11. 1. Calculate: – 20 – (5 + 2) = 13 – 10 x (3 + 6) = 90 – 1000 ÷ (30 - 5)40 – 38 – 3 x 6 + 9 = 29 Mathematical Literacy Future Managers 11
  • 12. Question 3 b. A worker on a fruit farm packs 475 peaches. Six of them are rotten. She packs the remainder in boxes, each containing 12 peaches. How many boxes can she fill? No of boxes = (475 – 6) ÷ 12 = 39.08 = 39 boxes Mathematical Literacy Future Managers 12
  • 13. Question 3 b. Bronwyn wins R357 000 in a competition. She invests R300 000 in an equity fund and distributes the rest amongst her four children. How much does each child receive? R357 000 - R300 000 = R57 000 R57 000 ÷ R14 250 per child Mathematical Literacy Future Managers 13
  • 14. Question 3 b. 20 apples and 16 pears cost R30. If the apples cost R2,50 each, find the cost of one pear. 20 x R2,50 = R50,00 for the apples R80 – R30 = R30 for the pears R30 ÷ 16 = R1,88 per pear Mathematical Literacy Future Managers 14
  • 15. Question 3 b. Every day Sam saves 50 cents and his sister Jemima saves half as much. How long will it take them to save R26,25 together? 2625 ÷ (50 + 25) = 2625 ÷ 75 = 35 days Mathematical Literacy Future Managers 15
  • 16. Question 3 b. The product of a calculation involving two numbers is 1 575. One number is 35. What is the other number? 1 575 ÷ 35 = 45 Mathematical Literacy Future Managers 16
