Nawroz, or the Kurdish New Year, is celebrated on March 21st throughout parts of the Middle East and Central Asia to mark the beginning of spring. Traditions include lighting bonfires to symbolize the passing of winter and the arrival of spring, as well as dancing, games, special foods and poetry readings. In Iraqi Kurdistan, the region has begun showcasing its unique culture through annual Nawroz festivals as Kurdish autonomy has increased in recent years. Nawroz is considered the most important festival in Kurdish culture.
