They have invested in racing horses and have had one race at Churchill Downs, the world-famous racetrack in Louisville that is home to the prestigious Kentucky Derby.
The Kentucky Derby is the longest-running sporting event in the United States. It all started when Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. returned home from a trip to England and France. While he was in Europe, the colonel fell in love with horse racing and wanted to bring the spectacle back to his home country.
Membership subscriptions raised the original funding for Churchill Downs, 320 at $100 apiece. Owners leased the land from Colonel Clark’s uncles. The original Churchill Downs complex comprised a clubhouse, a grandstand, a porters’ lodge, and six stables. On May 17, 1875, Churchill Downs held its first race, and a crowd of 10,000 spectators witnessed the three main races, including the 1.5-mile Kentucky Derby.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

NARRAGANSETT -- A house near the Dunes Club in Narragansett was sold last week for $6,075,000, which is
the second-highest price ever achieved for a Narragansett property, according to Lila Delman Real Estate.
The gated, beachfront home sits on a 1.9-acre parcel at 131 Boston Neck Road. Melanie Delman, president of Lila
Delman Real Estate, was assisted by associate Stella Fitzsimmons in the sale.
The four-bedroom, four-bathroom home was sold by Nicole Berg, of Syosset, N.Y., who purchased it in June
2012 for $4,620,000, according to town records. The buyers are Francis Barry III and Daria Becker Barry.
Berg had purchased the the house from Alan and Debra Wasserman, who bought the place in 1994 from Arthur
Little, the son of the late Textron Inc. founder, Royal Little.
The house has been featured twice as a Providence Journal "House of the Week." In 1993, a Journal story
identified Royal Little as the one who had the house built in 1941, and it said the house was moved south and up
on top of the dunes in 1944 after a hurricane "deposited a significant rock" through the front of the residence.
The story also said that the semicircular, beachfront stone terrace, which "looks like a helicopter pad -- and helicopters did land there" was built to protect the
house from the ocean.
According to data from the Rhode Island Statewide Multiple Listing Service, this marks the second-highest sale in Narragansett history. The only higher sale,
which occurred in 2010, was for $6.4 million.
