Cornelius Vanderbilt made a fortune in shipping in the 1800s and then invested in railroads, leaving over $100 million when he died. His grandson George Vanderbilt purchased 125,000 acres in North Carolina and built an enormous 250-room mansion there, opening it in 1895. The main dining room had a 70 foot tall ceiling and there were 34 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, 3 kitchens and 65 fireplaces throughout the lavish estate.
