The Harold Brown Villa, a 25-room Gilded Age mansion
at 459 Bellevue Ave., once owned by the late Newport
socialite Eileen Slocum, is up for sale for the first time in
124 years.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Harold Brown Villa, a 25-room Gilded Age mansion
at 459 Bellevue Ave., Newport, once owned by the late Newport socialite Eileen
Slocum, has been listed for $5.9 million.
“This presents an extraordinary opportunity to acquire a piece of Newport’s
history,” said listing agent Melanie Delman, president of Lila Delman Real Estate
International. The agency noted this was the first time in 124 years that the
house has been available.
“The home has a stately presence, with classical interiors, marble columns and
fireplaces, and beautiful decorative detail throughout,” Delman said.
Slocum died in 2008 at the age of 92. She was a grande dame of Newport society
and a nationally known Republican Party advocate and fundraiser.
Her former residence at 459 Bellevue Ave. was built in 1880 with original plans
by Dudley Newton. Sited on 4.85 acres, it has a granite exterior with
asymmetrically placed bay windows, doors and gabled extensions, and a porte-

Codman, the agency said, and the Olmsted brothers designed the grounds with
specimen trees and plantings to enhance privacy.
The 25 rooms include a grand entry hall with marble floors and columns, two
libraries, a formal dining room, and an enclosed conservatory.
