1. Asssalamualaikum Sir!
I’m writing in response to a position for graduate mechanical engineer in your organization
i.e. SignWorld. I’m a fresh graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Aligarh Muslim
University. I have studied this stream of engineering for last seven years including three
years in Diploma and then four years in continuation in my graduation in the same stream. I
have been asked to write about my skills both as a mechanical engineer and as an educated
person in general. I would say I have a decent technical or engineering background that a
manufacturing company expects from a fresh engineering graduate. But when it comes to
delivering the performance as an employee for an organization, one should have much
more to provide apart from his technical skills. What my skills really are and what good I can
do for the company that I’d be working for, are mentioned below:
• Communication Skills
I have good communication skills that include my abilities to listen, read, speak and
write. I can communicate with people in all three languages (English, Hindi & Urdu)
effectively and efficiently. I understand the need of a successful communication in
business and performing operations in an organization and will be looking forward to
learn other languages and cultures that can make my communication and convincing
abilities stronger.
• Analytical/ Research Skills
I have a good sense of assessing and analyzing the situations, sorting out the
multiple views and gathering as much information as possible about the issues to be
addressed and taking actions accordingly for the betterment of the organization. I
have been very fortunate to focus on these skills through my project works amid of
which I used to have numerous situations which required quite lengthy and critical
analysis, research, information handling and giving all these, a direction towards the
desired results.
• Technical Skills and Computer Literacy
Having seven years of mechanical Engineering background I would say I am
technically and logically good. In today’s time computer has enormous contribution
to one’s development as a successful engineer. So there is nothing different with
mechanical engineering too. I have a professional Diploma in designing courses like
2. AutoCAD and ProE from CADD Centre. But no product can be designed by any
software unless it gets designed free handedly. Being an artist I have a very good
hand in free sketching and designing. Also, I am comfortable with internet browsing
and basic computing software like MS Office, Sigma Plot 10, MS Movie Maker, etc.
and am quite comfortable with different operating systems like Windows, Mac and
Linux covering wide variety of applications.
• Flexibility and Adaptability
Being quite flexible in my approach I can make myself work in different working
environments without affecting my performance. I have worked with people of
different mindsets, fluencies and approaches and led them by keeping in mind their
pace and the areas they are strong in to bring out best from them and to make our
joint efforts successful. This reflects on my ability to adapt myself and to bring the
efforts of my mates into light. I think with these skills I can perform better for my
organization and also can motivate my co-workers and bring forward their efforts to
eventually make the organization work in a more efficient way.
• Leadership/ Management Skills
Honestly I was not born a leader. But Allah has been so kind to me and with time he
kept on creating such situations which brought out leadership qualities in me. Since
my school days I used to lead and manage many events from painting competitions
and science exhibitions to recently organized HR MEET in Aligarh Muslim University
in 2015, representing my school and then my university and have been awarded
many times too (including Best Student Award for the session 2002-2003). My
leadership and management skills got further improved when I led my teams in both
of my project works. Therefore, I understand the need of these skills when one steps
in and becomes a part of an organization of such stature and such standards to
meet.
• Multicultural Sensitivity/ Awareness
Diversity in employees at the workplace has always been a challenge for a newcomer
to deal with. So he should be completely aware of it and should give due respect to
the people and their cultures. I have experienced it on my entrepreneurship program
at GSP MOTORS (MAHINDRA & MAHINDRA) in Gurgaon, Haryana. There I used to
see people performing different rituals before starting any work and also witnessed
3. and became the part of the remaining ones giving respect to them and their cultures.
So I would say I am quite cultural sensitive and can communicate well with diverse
workforce.
• Planning and Organizing
These two skills or operations play the most important role in order to start things
from scratch and then giving them the face they are known for. In the engineering
field, they are equally important. By having these skills, an engineer can achieve that
is considered as prime in the manufacturing industries, completing the work on time.
I have planned and organized various events from sports to literary functions in the
school to Educational and scientific meets in the college and in the university as well.
Meeting deadlines on time for my engineering assignments have always been my
key to get appreciated as a student and I am sure this will going to benefit the
organization in various ways.
• Problem Solving and Creative Skills
Finding solutions to any problem, an engineering problem to be specific, is attributed
to effective problem solving techniques, reasoning and creative mindset. Being an
artist and a free hand designer I excel in out of the box thinking ability and can shape
my creative ideas according to the expectations of the organization and the
customers it is dealing with. I have extensively used these skills during the designing
and fabrication of the main frame for my “2T petrol engine test rig” project in
Diploma and managed to make the set up portable and experimental.
• Interpersonal Skills
I have got excellent interpersonal skills that enable me to relate and coordinate well
with my co-workers. My relationship building skills have connected me with some of
the best alumni of the varsity which eventually have opened the gates to new
possibilities and opportunities not only for the students but also for the upliftment of
the institution. Same will be the case with the organization I would be working for.
Interpersonal skills always play a vital role in connecting the employees in an
organization and making them strive to put their best in jobs they are assigned to. So
an organization is not only a place to put efforts in the operations to make best
possible products but it is also a meeting place of different ideologies and ideas to
make an organization a better place to work in.
4. • Team Work
An organization of such size and having so much diversity in its products and in its
employees and customers will have different groups to interact with, working to
achieve a common goal. So it becomes very important to blend well with them so as
to combine their efforts and convert them into extraordinary results. I am a team
player and have been a part of many teams that have organized diverse events like
from Annual Entrepreneurship Program in the college to first ever HR MEET in 2015.
So working in a team has always been a pleasure for me and played a huge role in
my academic success and will surely benefit your organization.
Apart from these skills there are some values that I have got as gifts from my
beloved family. These values define me as honest, adaptive, dependable, hard-
working, dedicated, reliable & responsible, loyal, positive thinking, self-confident,
motivated, energetic and hungry to learn.
My skills and values are the assets to my personality and I will use them
wisely for the organization I would be the part of. You will never find me saying that I
know everything but you’ll often hear me saying that I want to learn everything.
Thanks,
Danish Sultan.
