Pathway to be successful in your life. from this book you will learn a case study about the reality of your life. You will explore the real facts of your life.
1. Values Audit
I have developed 5 personal values throughout my degree.
Independent: Handle problems personally. I left home town and studying in Johor
Bahru.
Responsibility: Be responsible for personal action. I admitted the mistake when
doing wrong.
Teamwork: I have provided opinions to contribute as a member.
Leadership: As leader, I can guide members and learn from each other.
Respect: I accept opinion and criticism of others to build trusted relationship.
Vos and Soens (2008) stated that value is important in guiding individual career
decision. The values can influence a student career choice (Agarwala 2008). Ball
(1997) found that the individuals are mostly fight for higher achievement and job
satisfaction. These individual’s propensity is depend on personal values (Ball 1997).
Therefore, personal values are important to career management because it can help
me to make proper decision in life.
The field of work I intend to pursue are Marketing and Project Management. There
are several hard skills that I have developed.
Preparation of marketing plan: I will be able to provide effective solutions to
clients.
Identification, analysis, control of risk: I will be able to help clients achieve project
objectives by minimize or manage the negative effects.
Management of project: I can assist company to run the project smoothly.
Application of computer software: I can do the report with basic computer skills
including Microsoft Office.
Preparation of Financial Reports: With basic accounting knowledge, I can provide
reliable information for clients.
2. Capability Audit
When working in 100 Yen, I have learned to use nonverbal communication to
communicate with the customers who are from different backgrounds and countries
especially Japan and Korea. There is a corner selling the snow ice. I introduced and
promoted it to the customers who request. It has enabled me to communicate with
others. This is useful for future because communication skills will be assessed by the
employers through interview (Branine 2008).
The customer service skills are one of my strength. At 100 Yen, I had to be
multi-tasking as there are only three workers including me. By working as a sales
assistant and cashier, I was required to serve the customers with smile. As a cashier, I
need to answer the phone calls softly. I need to understand the products in order to sell
the product and answer the customers’ enquiry correctly. I have handled the
complaints and difficult customers. For example, I may allow the customers who are
unsatisfied with the products to change the product within a week. By the way, I need
to communicate with them nicely especially the difficult customers.
With organizational and administrative skills, the autonomy will be given by
employers for employees to organize their own working day (Stewart & Knowles
2000). I learned to manage the time to study and work during working. I also have
sufficient time for study and leisure. There are many assignments of subjects so that I
have to plan to make sure the assignments can be completed on time. I have learned to
use Microsoft Excel and Project to do the schedule. In the part time job, I was also
required to key in the purchases of goods or data into the computer.
I was the group leader of some subjects including International Business Challenges.
As the group leader, I always keep track work progress to ensure group members are
on the right track. I always welcome creative ideas when it comes to brainstorming
and mind-mapping. I have learned to lead the members in order to come out a good
3. project. As the result of being a leader, I am able to manage the project. This ability
is important even in small business as it allows employers to develop future managers
(Stewart & Knowles 2000).
The ability to work as a team is one of the recruitment criteria because the
employers have wanted the employees to work in a team (Hashim 2012). Some
lecturers have assigned us into team in order to put us in a corporate environment. It
was not easy working together but time makes us know each other. As a team member,
I have shared my opinions while also learning from each other. From the past
employment, I have helped to tag the prices when I was free at counter as a cashier.
By working in team, all the tasks can be done easily.
I need to further develop communication skill although I have improved my
communication skill in working. This is because I still not fluency in English.
Sometimes, I am not able to pronounce the words and express correctly to the
customers. It will caused misunderstanding between customers and I. Therefore, I
have to keep improving my English as it is international language and very useful in
future workplace.
In order to improve my English, I need to be more confidence to speak English in
public. I will register English program to increase my English standard. Besides, I will
keep listening radio and speaking with my families and friends in English.
Furthermore, I will also read English books and newspapers to improve it. By doing
so, it can help me to improve my communication skills.
4. Personal Branding
Hi, my name is Woo Jia Min. I am fresh Business graduate in Marketing of Victoria
University, Melbourne at Sunway College Johor Bahru. I completed my degree
studies in 2016. I have interested in Marketing field since I studied Diploma in
Business Administration. I am looking for the opportunities of marketing job in
Australia and Singapore. My career aspiration is to be a successful marketing
manager in a company. It is a very challenging work as it requires experiences and
knowledge related with business.
I worked as a part time worker at 100 Yen previously. It has enhanced my
communication and interpersonal skills. Customer service skills are strength for me as
I can understand their needs and wants, handle complaints and service the customers
nicely to build strong relationship. Besides that, I have developed organizational and
administrative skills by balancing university, social and working life. I am also
capable to guide and work with others through group assignment and activities.
My personal values have assisted me in all my achievements. I have acquired several
skills such as marketing planning, project management, risk management, basic
computer skills and financial planning in degree studies. I am confident I could utilize
the skills and knowledge that I have learnt in future workplace. I hope that I could
have the chance to be one of your employees. Please visit my LinkedIn profile at
