Prior to embarking, I attend seminars,
workshops and other tourism events to help
develop my professionalism and broaden my
scope of knowledge. These events increase my
understanding of significant historical events
and landmarks that I will need to pass on to my
tour group.

3. As we prepare to depart I ensure that our
tour is planned and mapped out. This will help
guide my tour groups’ learning and will allow me
to make connections and present the information
in a meaningful and relevant way. It is my hope to
keep my group engaged and entertained as we

4. As our tour commences it is vital to build
positive relationships with my group. This may
not always be easy but, by choosing to have a
cheerful disposition and make the best of any
situation, a relationship can be established. The
trust that comes with relationships will help us
get through any bumps and obstacles that we
may face.

is imperative that I be organized. Being
organized allows me to monitor our progress
and report to our group on the daily routine.
This will help ensure that no one gets left
behind. I also need to outline any rules that I
need my group to follow, in order to guarantee
their safety and keep their best interests at
heart.

6. Along with organization, timing is of the
essence. We only have a limited time together
and it is my job to make sure that my group has
all the knowledge that they need. As well, due
to timing we need to do our best to continually
assess where we are and how to most
effectively meet our timelines.

7. Although our time is limited, and there
are many things that we need to learn, it is
important that we make time to have fun along
the way and make memories that will last a
lifetime.

8. As our tour begins to come to an end it is
important to review and make connections to
all the learning that has taken place on our
tour. This is the time for the group to share the
insight and knowledge that they have learned
with me and take time to evaluate me on my
professionalism and tourism skills.

9. As the tour comes to an end, it requires
me to take time to reflect on my experience.
Was I successful? Did I get across what I needed
too? Did I establish positive and meaningful
relationships? If not, what can I do differently
the next time to make the most of peoples
time? As I ponder these questions and make
notes of what I can do better, and what I did
well I can begin the planning stages again. I am
excited to meet a new group of people and
teach them the fascinating history and
mysteries that our world holds!
