This presentation outlines the process of developing my own personal learning network (PLN). Includes mission statement, goals, scope, objectives, resources, management strategies and successes. This was pulled together as a class project but way overdue for its application to professional development, lifelong learning, and scholastic endeavors. While complex in its current status, though, the PLN is constantly transformative - it will grow, it will change, and it will evolve just as the people, situations, and understandings within my life will also change. That's the beauty of an active personal learning network!
Importance of Structure in Learning the English LanguageRanjit Singh Thind
Of all the four skills in a language, which helps an individual the most to express his or her ideas and feelings to others?
The two most important skills are speaking and writing. Speaking and writing are the Transmission Skills. In order for one to transmit one's ideas and feelings to others effectively, a good command in the said language is essential. Of course, listening and reading play an important part in language too. They are the Reception Skills. But speaking and writing help one to accomplish one's purpose.
Clarity in speaking and writing is achieved by dint of effort in language learning. It rewards handsomely if the language is learned in a methodical and logical manner. And it applies even more to a language like English which is the indisputable world language at present.
One may possess all the knowledge pertaining to one's vocation but if one lacks the powers of expression, one is very much handicapped to compete locally and globally. Thus, the powers of expression in the transmission skills in a language are very much enhanced when one has learned a language logically.
Developing principled frameworks for material developmentH. R. Marasabessy
A. What does ‘Materials development’ mean?
○ ‘Materials development’ refers to all the processes made use of by practitioners who produce and/or use materials for language learning, including materials evaluation, their adaptation, design, production, exploitation and research. Ideally, all of these processes should be given consideration and should interact in the making of language-learning materials.
○ Materials development is both a field of study and a practical undertaking. As a field it studies the principles and procedures of the design, implementation and evaluation of language teaching materials
B. Frameworks for materials development
Richards (1995:102-103) describes frameworks as the process of designing a “design or frame for a unit in a textbook” which can “serve as a formulae which the author can use in writing the book
C. Principles in Materials Development
Most writers on the process of the materials development focus on needs analysis as starting point. And some writers report starting by articulating their principles.
Bell and Gower (1998:122-125) started by articulating principles which they wanted to guide their writing:
○ Flexibility
○ From text to language
○ Engaging content
○ Natural language
○ Analytic approaches
○ Emphasis on review
○ Personalized practice
○ Integrated skills
○ Balance of approaches
○ Learner development
○ Professional respect
Tomlinson (1999b) describes a principled and flexible framework designed to help teachers to develop materials efficiently and effectively.
Penaflorida (1995:172-179) reports her use of the six principles of materials design identified by Nunan (1988):
1. Materials should be clearly linked to the curriculum they serve.
2. Materials should be authentic in terms of text and task
3. Materials should be authentic in terms of text and task
4. Materials should allow learners to focus on formal aspects of the language
5. Materials should encourage learners to develop learning skills, and skills in learning
6. Materials should encourage learners to apply their developing skills to the world beyond the classroom.
D. A Text-driven Approach to Materials Development
Tomlinson’s own preference is the text-driven approach, in which an engaging written or spoken text drives a unit of materials in which readiness activities activate the learners’ minds in relation to the text, initial response activities stimulate engagement whilst experiencing the text, intake response activities encourage articulation of personal responses, input response activities invite exploration of features of the text and development activities encourage learner production (Tomlinson 2003c).

This is my presentation in TESOL 109 (Language Material Preparation and Evaluation. It includes a discussion of what a skills-based syllbus is, its advantages and disadvantages, an ennumeration of the different microskills for each macroskill, a sample skills-based English language program.
If you want to teach English pronunciation, you have to first come up with a plan about how you want your lessons to progress. Will you be breaking the students into groups? Also know that students tend to learn well from educators who remain consistent. Make a schedule and try to keep up with it.

Using social media to develop a professional online presenceSue Beckingham
Invited Speaker at University of East Anglia
The exponential growth of social media and ubiquitous use of mobile technology has changed the way we communicate both socially and for many also professionally. It is important to consider the implications and the impact of the digital footprint our online interactions leave behind. This workshop will help you to reflect on what your online presence looks like when viewed by others, consider who your audiences are and how you can develop your digital profile in a positive way.
Here is my visual reflection on collaboration for PK12-LIB1-022. My reflection includes 5 sections:
• My experiences & learnings from the readings.
• Successes
• Challenges?
• How Guided Inquiry supports collaboration (and how collaboration supports guided inquiry)
• How technology and innovation are critical for advancing collaboration, particularly during the pandemic.
Please let me know what you think!
As the proliferation of digital technologies and access to information continues to invite different ways of thinking, learning today is influenced by the ever-evolving, interconnected complex systems. While these systems have the potential to expand the ecologies of teaching and learning, many students and teachers have yet to tap into their richness. This session explores how connectivism and networked learning might be used to enhance the teaching and learning of first-year writing. I seek to demonstrate how personal technology, Open Educational Resources, and cloud-based computing could be integrated into the curriculum to cultivate interactive, self-directed learning. I will also consider the teacher’s role in facilitating the networked learning process, helping students to situate themselves within the complex relationships of technologies and discourse communities. I hope this creates an open forum to discuss the embedded rhetorics in technology, as well as to explore methodologies for research in the realm of connectivism.
With our rapidly increasing and instantaneous access to information, it can be difficult to help people slice through the “data smog” and become fluent with information while critically assessing its value and purpose. This webinar introduces a variety of technical resources and research tools, and provides tips to help make learning more meaningful, engaging, and relevant, with the ultimate goal of providing learners with opportunities to create something new and exciting. The end goal is to help learners enrich their lives by constructing a personal learning environment, online or face-to-face, that is conducive to information discovery, sharing, and lifelong learning.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2. A New Culture of
Learning
A personal learning network (PLN)
can be defined as a group of people
with whom you connect to interact
and exchange information and
resource; share knowledge,
experience and ideas, collecting and
creating an informed guide to
professional development
opportunities and continual learning”
(Howlett, 2011, p. 2)

3. No One Learns Alone
“We define the activity of professional
networking as the act of making
connections with other professionals,
with or without the intention of making
long–term ties with them”
- Rajagopal, 2012
4. Value of A
Personal Learning Network
Enables and provides support for learning
Increases access and effectiveness of
learning
Connects with people in spite of geographical
distances
Complements face to face communication
Contributes to professional development
Fosters transformative learning
5. Planning my
Personal
Learning
Network
In a physical world where
we aim to separate our
professional and personal
endeavors in an effort to
find balance, my PLN allows
the blending of all my
interests to come together
in one place where
exploration, networking,
and fun will be unlimited.
6. Mission Statement
My PLN will…
be transparent and open for others to view,
to participate, and to learn from
foster lifelong learning for myself and others
permit both creativity and curiosity

31. Be Patient
Building a PLN doesn’t happen quickly
It takes time to make connections
It takes time to build relationships
It takes participation to determine the
value of a community
It takes perseverance when you
receive no comments or replies
It requires patience to build your social
presence
32. Be Authentic
“Don’t try to game the system, worry to much about your
online “brand,” or in any way cajole people into following
you or responding to you The more you reveal your humanity
the more people will trust you, identify with you, and respond
to your reflections and appeals. More importantly, the more
you seek out the humanity in others, the more they will want
to connect with you – and share with you.”
Wagner, 2012
