My Love Analysis
Route 94 ft. Jess Glynne
Lyrics
• My love and my touch,
Up above, made with the
warmth of my
My love and my touch,
Up above, made with the
warmth of my
My love and my touch,
Up above, made with the
warmth of my
My love and my touch,
Up above, made with the
warmth of my
My love and my touch,
Up above, made with the
warmth of my
Love, stay close to me
Love, stay close, stay close...
Oooh, baby, baby...
Oooh, baby, baby...
The lyrics to Jess Glynnes first poplar song and
collaboration with Route 94 are limited, however the
repetition of ”my love” clearly shows the theme of “love”
that the video and song are all about.
To continue, much like most dance tracks limited lyrics are
a traditional convention, as we all know, dance tracks
aren't go-to shower songs or ballads, therefore this song
successfully sticks to those codes and conventions.
To continue, the individual words are all basic making
them easy to remember and catchy, when this song came
out everyone was singing the 6 lines…
Music
• With the drum and snare beat behind the track along with the classic
piano melody at the start really brings together both traditional forms
of music e.g. the piano and conventional forms of dance music. Giving
the song a fresh and catchy tune.
• To continue, the track starts with a basic clean beat with the first
rendition of the lyrics slightly muffled as we enter the club, following
a single male on a night out, making the audio and lyrics clearer,
giving the listeners/viewers the same effect as if we were entering the
club ourselves. When the music just fades into the piano as the track
starts, it makes he impact of the beat and effects even better as it
provides a good build up for a chill dance track, the build up and the
drop is what the dance genre is now all about.
Mise-en-scene
• Being a dance tracks it does successfully stick to the codes and conventions of the
genre, and all being filmed in a night club does exactly that.
• To continue the use of infrared effects makes the whole video feel even more
surreal, much like being in a club. However, the infrared effect only uses pinks,
purples and yellows, all vibrant and bright colors that possibly reflect the bright
lights in the club as well as reinforcing the theme of love and attraction (pinks and
purples stereotypically female colors and associated with love) to continue the
white on the people featured and the hottest point of the video really
emphasizes the heat between the two main characters in the video as they grow
closer and closer to end in a one night stand.
• The video also features a wolf/dog in multiple places, this I possibly to represent
the way the male in the video has animalistic characteristics as he peruses a
woman through the night club, reflecting how humans are still animals.
Camera Work
• Much like all dance music videos this one focuses n using short sharp and
quick cut shots, to exaggerate the feeling of being in a night club, and keeps
to the upbeat and fast tempo of the song itself.
• The video also uses a fade, the camera fades into a shot of the main male
character walking towards the entrance of the club facing the character
head on to cutting behind the character however changing the effect to the
infrared lighting.
• We then continue to follow the character around the night club quite
relaxed at first to then when the track drops to the music break in the
chorus, more frantic and vigorous cuts
• The ending reflects the start of the video with the camera following the
man as he walks out of the girls apartment and the camera changes to
normal imaging and lighting.
editing
• Apart from the sharp changes of shot the only real main editing the video
has is the infrared effect throughout the whole video.
• As explained before this gives the video an almost surreal effect, similar to
the distortion felt when consuming drugs or alcohol, featured in the video.
• To continue, the change and fade from infrared to normal imaging makes
the reality of the start and end of the night even more real, as when he
leaves either the club or the girls apartment he drops to reality into normal
lighting.
Narrative/performance
• The whole video follows a single male I a night club as he discovers
the truths within of drugs, alcohol and music
• He soon begins to peruse a female he meets across a bar and ends up
spending the night with her, shown at the end of the video when they
enter her apartment kissing and undressing each other.
• The song may not completely fit the story line but the idea of physical
love is present as well as the idea of warmth within the heat between
both the two main characters and the people in the night club, shown
through the infrared effects.
Star image / the brand
• Neither Jess Glynne or Route 94 are featured in th video
therefore there is no real element of star image being a
consideration, furthermore as we cannot clearly see the
actors used we can only assume that they are not famous or
recognizable, therefore no brand highlighted or promoted.
voyeurism
The voyeurism element to this video comes from not only seeing inside
a night club which (depending on age) some viewers should not see, as
well as the consumption of drugs and alcohol.
Furthermore, we also get very close and personal with the two main
actors as we see them passionately kissing (the start of a one night
stand). This is the strongest element of voyeurism as we do not see into
the intimacies of peoples nights or lives normally. It can also be argued
that this was put into the video to add an element of pleasure for some
viewers as well as reflect the theme of ”my love and my touch”.
context
• This being the jump start to Jess Glynne’s career hold strong
significance to her as from this all her fame has blossomed.
Future collaborations with clean bandit onto her own albums
an tours.
• Also when the song released in 2015, the music ranged from
Adele’s hit Hello to Justin Beiber’s amazing trio of songs all in
the same year. This song reflects exactly that with its
traditional and edited music mash up.
