Windows and Linux are two of the most popular operating systems. Windows was first introduced by Microsoft in 1985 and came to dominate the personal computer market. Linux was originally written in 1991 by Linus Torvalds and is an example of free and open source software collaboration. While Windows has maintained a large majority market share for personal desktop use, Linux has sustained its status as the prominent free software operating system. The two operating systems now compete in various markets beyond personal computers such as servers and mobile devices.
Windows 1.0 was the first version of the Windows operating system released by Microsoft in 1985. It provided a graphical user interface and mouse support, allowing users to run multiple applications at the same time. However, Windows 1.0 could only display windows in a tiled format and had limited functionality compared to later versions. It required at least 384KB of RAM, a graphics card, and was built on top of the MS-DOS operating system. Windows 1.0 helped drive adoption of the graphical user interface on PCs and was superseded by Windows 2.0 in 1987.

Open source software (OSS) provides access to source code that allows users to modify and improve the software. Examples include Linux, Blender, and Firefox. Proprietary software keeps its source code private, requiring users to purchase licenses. OSS is free to use and modify while proprietary software must be purchased. Key differences are that OSS users can modify the code themselves while proprietary users must wait for vendor updates, and OSS has no single entity responsible for support while proprietary has the vendor. The role of an operating system is to provide an interface between hardware, software, and users/programs, managing resources like processors and memory to allow for multi-tasking and sharing across multiple users.

icon for lists by category--Documents, Internet Documents, Drawings and Images, and so

the selection still further by date and file type
(such as Word documents and text files). (11/19/07)

146. Vista Firewall Control – “If you want true outbound firewall protection, use this
to help manage Windows Vista's built-in firewall. Microsoft has been touting the new
Windows Firewall in Windows Vista, which it says for the first time includes an
outbound filter as well as an inbound filter. Outbound filters are important, because if
you've been infected with a Trojan or similar software, it makes an outbound connection
without your knowledge, letting someone else take control of your PC. Some malware
can also turn your PC into a spam-spewing robot, sending out email without your
knowledge. Unfortunately, the outbound filter in Windows Vista is, in essence, turned off
by default. And as a practical matter, it's impossible to manually configure it to block
malware making outbound connections. That's where the free VistaFirewallControl
comes in. Install it, and whenever an application tries to access the Internet, a screen pops
up, with the application name, the publisher, and similar information, as well its path and
file name. You can enable or disable inbound or outbound connections it tries to make,
either permanently, or just this one time. If you're not sure if the program is malware or
not, go to www.processlibrary.com and do a search for the file name, for details. All in
all, VistaFirewallControl is a great way to make sure your PC isn't making unwanted
outbound connections.” The program can be found @ find.pcworld.com/57258.

its name works with both Vista and XP. It puts all of your programs and important
folders within easy reach, so that you can launch them quickly. It also gives you fast
access to turning off, rebooting, logging off, and switching users. (5/9/08)

Here are four useful programs that will run on any storage device, even your MP3 player:
A free office suite. Imagine showing up to give a PowerPoint presentation, but the computer you
are given doesn't have PowerPoint installed. You can download a free viewer from Microsoft,
but forget about last second changes in sale figures.
That's where Portable OpenOffice comes in. It's a free suite of programs. Included are a word
processor, a spreadsheet, multimedia presentation program, drawing program and a database
management program. All of the programs are compatible with Microsoft Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Visio and Access. They are also compatible with other programs like Word Perfect
and Lotus. Even though it's a portable version of OpenOffice.org, it still requires a lot of space -
167 MB.
2) A Web browser. Surfing the Net on a public computer is, well, public. Purchasing something
online and failing to sign out could be dangerous. Clearing the browsing history, and dumping
the cookies and cache should erase your tracks. But what if you forget?
Portable Firefox allows you to surf the Net without leaving tracks. Extensions used on your
home computer can be carried over as well. Ditto for your bookmarks (a listing of favorite sites)
and passwords. Portable Firefox takes up 16.9 MB on a thumb drive.
3) All-in-one Instant Messaging program. Imagine talking simultaneously on Yahoo!
Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger and MSN Messenger. And using only one program.
Well, you can do it with Portable GAIM and Portable Miranda. Portable GAIM is best suited for
users who want to avoid settings. Miranda, although more complex, gives greater customization.
Portable GAIM requires 8.9MB of free space, and Portable Miranda, 1.2MB.
4) Password security. There's a user name and password for everything. Strong passwords
require a combination of letters, symbols and numbers. Those passwords are difficult to
remember. And each account should have a different password. That's a lot of information to
keep in your head!
The free KeePass stores passwords in an encrypted database. It will import your list of passwords
from various file formats, such as CSV. Or, you can enter each user name and password
manually. KeePass requires less than 1MB of space.
