Latvia has over 3000 lakes, with the deepest being Dridzis and largest being Lubans. The longest river is Gauja, while Daugava flows through Riga on its way to the sea. Castles and palaces first appeared in the 13th century and many impressive manor houses and estates were built between the 18th-20th centuries.
