The children s parents both agree that they cannot provide a suitable safe home life for their
children. The children are now living with their grandmother and they are happy and thriving.
Although there is concern that her health will have an impact on her ability to care for the children
long term and the local authority has recommended adoption for the children. However, the
grandmother also has two other grown up children, one of whom is an adult. These relatives
support the grandmother and have agreed to look after the children in the future if the grandmother

The Act mainly focuses on children s welfare and keeping families together. The acts main focus is
on keeping families together and states removing children from their homes should always be a last
resort when support and guidance has failed.
In section 1 of the Act there is a welfare checklist which consists of seven principles that courts
must give consideration to the wishes and feelings of children, their physical, emotional and
learning needs, features which will be applicable to the court s conclusion, The possible outcome
on the child if circumstances changed as a result of the court s decision, any harm the child has
suffered or may be at risk of suffering and the capability of children s parents (inbrief helping with
life s legal issues, n.d).
Under section 17 of The Children Act (1989) it is the local authority s (LA) duty to safeguard
and promote the welfare of children in their area who are in need. The children from the case
study are both classed as in need as they were witnesses to unsafe drug abuse and were living in a
dirty home (Coram CLC Children s legal Centre ,2014). Once there is a suitable reason for concern
it is the local authority s duty to investigate the case further under section 47 of The Children Act
(1989) the authority shall make enquiries to establish whether they should take any action to
safeguard or promote the child s welfare (Legislation.Gov.uk, 2014). Following

The Usefulness Of The Canadian Senate
David C. Docherty s scholarly journal responds to the continual controversy and debate of the
usefulness of the Canadian senate in 2002. Docherty s article does an amazing job at analyzing the
current Canadian senate and argues that the senate is a failing Canadian institution because of two
democratic deficiencies: the undemocratic nature of senator selection and the inability of senators
to represent provinces properly (45). These two features of why the senateis a failing Canadian
institution can be compared to how Rand Dyck defines democracyin Canadian Politics: Critical
Approaches. Docherty looks at several previous senate reforms and answers the question of why
these senate reforms failed, in doing so Docherty lays down a framework for a possible
successful senate reform but acknowledges the obstacles. Docherty does a very good job at
accessing the problem of the senate, accessing the problem of previous reforms, and suggesting a
plausible type of reform for the senate. This provides the reader with the knowledge of why the
Canadian senate is a failing institution but also the possible solutions of how the senate can be
reformed in order to maximize its democratic potential. Although, Docherty fails to provide an
exact reform that needs to be taken, he just draws upon other failures and hypothesis that this may
be the right solution for reform. Rand Dyck s chapter 11 fills in the missing gap of reform that
needs to be taken by drawing upon one of the best attempts at

Did Milgram s Original Experiment Have A Good Design Or...
1. Did Stanley Milgram s original experiment have a good design, or was it flawed?
Stanley Milgram s original six degrees of separation experiment was flawed because it did not
account for key factors that are essential to statistical experimentation. An example of the key
factors that Milgram failed to consider in his experiment is the sampling method. Using a voluntary
response sample Milgram formulated his conclusions. However, as often happens with voluntary
response samples, the experiment s success depended completely on who participated thus skewing
the actual accuracy of the six degrees of separation that Milgram claimed resulted from the the
findings of his original experiment. Furthermore, Milgram s sample method carried over in how he
started the letter trains. Instead of randomly selecting cities from which to start the letter trains,
Milgram started all 60 letters by sending them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Milgram s original data averaged this mythical six intermediaries this fails to justify the
concept for a few reasons. First, in order to draw conclusions from experimental data we must
ensure we have a right sample size. In this experiment drawing conclusions from only two
successful chains is not an accurate representation of the data as the sample size is extremely small
and many of these chains, in fact, failed utterly. Furthermore, Milgram s justification of six degrees
of separation is based on only those people in Wichita which continues the trend of sample size
misuse in this particular Milgram experiment. Since Milgram failed to see the accuracy issues in
his experiment we can definitely conclude his original data does not justify the concept of six

A Symbolic Activity Essay
Memorialization as a Symbolic Activity There is a growing awareness that addressing past
injustices are crucial for the process of healing and reconciliation. In order to move towards a
peaceful future, governments must acknowledge and respond to the wrongs and injustices of the
past. While there is an agreement between people that the process of reconciliation must
acknowledge the wrongs of the past and the victims, many scholars debate about how such
acknowledgments are best communicated, so that they will be sufficiently credible and effective in
improving future relations. In fact, many argue that memory is crucially important as a response to
past injustices, especially when dealing with human rightsviolations. Memorializing the past,
through memorials, commemorative ceremonies, etc., is widely promoted as a valuable way of
redressing the wrongs of the past. But what kind of redress can memorials provide, and how can
they advance in transitional justice? Indeed, I consider these symbolic reparations to be a double
edged sword due to the strengths and weaknesses, it presents as a practice for redressing the losses
that were suffered by victims. In recent years, forgiveness has attracted attention as a possible
response of victims to perpetrators in past violent human rights abuses. Moreover, transitional
justice focuses on the effective and legitimate ways of addressing past wrongs and moving towards
achieving political reconciliation and re establishing societies

Modernism In Langston Hughes s The Negro Speaks Of Rivers
Modernism was a philosophical movement that occurred in America and England during the
nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This era is distinguished by the break with traditions of literary
forms, styles, and concepts, giving creation to an assortment of cultural, art, and political
movements. Perhaps nobody took as full of an advantage of the concept of modernismas poets did,
expanding the possibilities of their works to unimaginable lengths. Poets such as Langston Hughes,
William Carlos Williams, Gertrude Stein, and many others employed literary devices to portray
important messages that they often buried in their works. From the use of these literary devices
such as metaphors, imagery, and symbolism these poets were able to portray concepts of race,
class, and gender in the Modernism era. Written at the age of seventeen, The Negro Speaks of
Rivers by Langston Hughes illustrates the historical journey of the African Americanrace to
America (Socarides). By using rivers as a metaphor for the source of life, Hughes outlines the
movement of African American race from the Nile and Euphrates rivers in Africa to the
Mississippi. Hughes subtly expresses his admonition of slavery and racism in the line My soul
has grown deep like the rivers (Line 4). The line first appears in the poem when it follows the
speaker s statement that he has known rivers ancient as the world and older than the/ flow of
human blood in human veins (Lines 2 3). The speaker here classifies himself

The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Haley
We re not Americans. We re Africans who happen to be in America. We were kidnapped and
brought here against our will from Africa. We didn t land on Plymouth Rock that rock landed on
us. (Lord, Thornton, and Bodipo Memba, 1992)
Words like those above would engrave Malcolm X into the minds of Americans from all racial
backgrounds and socio economic classes. Malcolm X was certainly not one to mince words.
America would come to remember him as The Hate That Hate Produced , the title of a 1959 CBS
documentary narrated by Mike Wallace which focused on Malcolm s involvement in what was
perceived as the rise of black racism (Lord, Thornton, and Bodipo Memba, 1992).

His reasoning? The injustices dealt him by white Christians. Leaving the pews of the church he
entered the world of the street hoodlum where he would exist until his arrest and prosecution for
armed robbery at age twenty (Allah, 1995). He recalls the 1946 crime in The Autobiography of
Malcolm X :
quot;I had put a stolen watch into a jewelry shop to replace a broken crystal, quot; he said.
quot; Two days later things fell apart when I went to pick it up. quot; (Allah, 1995, PG).
Malcolm recalls that he was armed when he went into the shop and that an undercover policeman
was waiting in quiet for him. Rather than drawing his gun, Malcolm surrendered it without
incident to the officer. He didn t try to flee or to fight back as he was arrested. He pleaded guilty
to numerous burglaries in the area and was eventually sentenced, along with an accomplice, to six
to eight years in New York s maximum security prison in Boston s Charlestown district (Allah,
1995).
It would be while he was in prison for this crime that he would join the Nation of Islam. With the
nation of Islam Malcolm X would find a new, or perhaps an old, focus in life: the white man. The
next twelve years of his life would be devoted to righting the wrongs that the whites had dealt to the
blacks throughout the history of the United States.

Emotions such as loneliness, fear, and stress are all experienced by the experimenters in the lab.
Their only living space other than when being tested on, is a small enclosed cage, that if lucky

According to New York Times, Barnaby J. Feder, a general technology reporter, states that there
are new technological advancements such as Human skin, eyes, and lining of the throat, that
can be used instead. It is possible to obtain human alternatives because small portions of tissue of
any of these can now be grown in test tubes (Feder, New York Times). This could be the answer
to not only perhaps get correct answers to human disease, but to stop the use of all animal
testing. With these alternatives their will no longer be a need to use animals for any use of
research, when you can get much more accurate results using the specific organism that is being
researched for. It does not stop there; testing can also now be done virtually on computers,
stimulation software, or even volunteers can intake potential new drugs that have no effect to
humans (Feder, New York Times). From a simple computer screen, it is so much easier to test on
animals because there would not have to have so much expenses, prior to how they are doing so
with animals, so much items are used. All these new alternatives must be taken into consideration
to stop the use of animals. Not only is there a higher chance of getting more effective results, but it
also saves on little animal from harm or possibly even

environmental justice movement is the confluence of three of America s greatest challenges: the
struggle against racism and poverty; the effort to preserve and improve the environment; and the
compelling need to shift social institutions from class division and environmental depletion to
social unity and global sustainability. (pg.1)

I will discuss why communities in the United States, who have the least political power, fewer
resources such as money, time and education and have little to no community awareness on
ecological threats, are more than likely to experience arduous environmental and health problems.
Additionally, I will explain that the main reason certain communities are not talking about these
injustices is because they don t know how much they are being affected by toxic air pollution or
water contamination. How they don t understand the neoliberal policies that encourage and allow
companies to be located near their homes, schools and children. I will then go into a case study
about Barrio Logan and the injustices the community has faced over the century. Through my case
study, I will discuss how organizations like Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI) are extremely
important because they encourage families to become more involved with their community. Using
BLCI s coalition efforts, I will focus on ways in which activism, education and community
involvement are important when fighting against environmental injustices in Barrio Logan.

A Picture Of The Kancamagus Highway
Painting a Picture of the Kancamagus Highway The mountains are known for cutting through the
landscape like glaciers. The Kancamagus Highway, or The Fearless One cuts through Lincoln, to
Conway, New Hampshire. Rich in history as well winding roads, and mammoth mountains are
often traveled by the fearless, and adventurous traveler. For some, they stumble upon this great
beauty is small and not appreciated, but for others the venture is a state of mind and continues to
inspire long after the visit is concluded. The Kancamagus Highway evokes the emotion of
nostalgia in every journey. Entering the area I first noticed the mountains, covered in rugs of
green, gold, ember red, and burning orange trees. The mountains were the spines of the land,
holding together the whole landscape. Off to a distance shining white pyramids could be seen.
The tops of the mountains soared up to the sky and to the heavens as to kiss the stars with the
cold peaks. I was just a quiet observer of there glorious range. They stood ghost like, and the only
thing bigger then these slumbering giants was my gaze when taking them in. As I turn from the
outlook, leaving the booming mountains to my back I notice the trees. Making up this glowing
landscape were the burning leaves of the trees. The canopy of color burned with high intensity.
Each leaf was chattering in the wind making up faint rustling, perhaps to keep the forests secret
below. Nature s sympathy was conducting itself is a small crescendo.

Sudoku is an additional inductive problem, requiring children to work systematically and logically

The Using and Applying Guidance Paper (DfES,2006) believe when children are acquiring

Open Adoption Vs Closed Adoption Essay
A closed adoption and an open adoption are very different. Children in a closed adoption do not
have any legal contact with their biological parents. As for an open adoption, children are allowed
to know and or visit their biological parents. Children in closed adoptions should have a right to
know they were adopted and know their familybecause these children should have a say in how
they want to be raised as well. As for children in an open adoption, they can grow up and still have
a close connection with their birth parents and relatives. Some children in a closed adoptionknow
that they were adopted, but they have many questions floating around in their heads on why their
biological parents do not want them or even why they gave them up for adoption. With certain
open adoptions, children know their biological parents and know the reason why they were
adopted. I do not support closed adoption. The reason why is because the parents that go through
closed adoptions do not think of what their child wants. Most of these children grow up not
knowing why they were given up. These children do not have a say in this situation, and it is not

Essay Comparing Dulce Et Decorum Est And Futility
Wilfred Owen combines realism with a romantic lyric poignancy and a visionary mode that
enables him to lead us to a true understanding of the personal costs of war. His veracity and close
proximity to World War one confronts us as well as shows compassion for the young men that
fought. Both his poems Dulce et Decorum estand Futility explore the psychological, physical and
the futile costs that war brought upon us. Owen s poetic skills, vivid language and sensory
imagery express his bitter animosity of those who encourage war in Dulce et Decorum and the
pointlessness of war and perhaps life itself in the poem Futility.

uncomfortable. The first stanza begins with soldiers trudging through the ubiquitous sludge and
the dual adjective knock kneed shows physical exhaustion and fatigue of the young men that
instantly reverses this idea of them being noble and healthy fighting. Followed by the visceral
imagery the blood come gargling from the froth corrupted lungs . This effectively recreates the
scene Owen witnessed to involve the audience by encouraging them to hear at every jolt the
physical horror the soldiers suffered and invoke their pity. Owen uses imagery more subtle in
Futility. He creates this repetitive image of the sun as having revitalising ability to bring back the
dead and present the realness of physical death on

The Last Of The Mohicans Movie Essay
In the time of the 7 years war, is the timeframe which The last of the Mohicans was written in and
then later, made into a film based on the novel. I will be describing the plot, both the historical
accuracies and inaccuracies, the film themes, and my opinion of the acting, all on the 1992 film. I
was completely impressed with this film. Not having read the book I cannot compare the two,
however I can compare what I saw with actual events from that time and what I saw. The plot of
this film starts out in 1757, the American colonies are in the middle of the third year of the French
and Indian War. This war was comprised of English and French soldiers fighting for the possession
of the continent. It starts out with this quote in the beginning... Show more content on

It lingers too much on either the romance or the feud between Magua and Col. Munroe. All great
parts of the story, yes, however, if you were watching The Last of the Mohicanspurely for
historical purposes and to find out things about the war, you wouldn t learn much. Yes, the
movie (and the book as well I m sure), does depict for the most part of what I could tell,
everything accurately. It is the point of it not showing enough about this huge event in our
history. How did the war get started? Who won the war? What all tribes and alliances aided both
sides? There are a lot of left out details, unfortunately, which makes it hard to follow the details of
the French and Indian war. For example, the fight between Magua and his Indians against
Munroe and the English was quite a bit less violent than what is led to believe. Not to forget, we
are not shown the reaction of Montcalm in finding out his Huron Indians disobeyed him in
letting the English go safely. Also, the deepest inaccuracies I do believe come from what the
book had written and what the movie chose to tell us. Those things aside though, it is a marvelous
film. Yes, there are some inaccuracies in this film and probably even in the book, however, for a
Hollywood production, I think they outdid themselves (did amazing). It can be a little hard to
follow at times, but the film is overall

Our Nig By Harriet Wilson
Harriet Wilson s novel Our Nig, follows the life of Frado, a young mulatto girl in the household
of a white family in New England. She is abandoned to this family at the age of six because her
mother could not afford to care for her and resented her and the hardships to which her birth had
contributed. The mistress of the household to which Frado is left is a cruel and spiteful woman,
especially towards blacks. When Frado is left in the care of the Bellmont residence as a young girl,
she has no idea of the troubles she would have to face for most of her life. From the very
beginning, neither Mrs. Bellmont, the main antagonist, nor her equally cruel daughter, Mary, show
any hint of compassion or even mercy for the young girl. The story follows Frado and her life in the
Bellmont household.
Mr. Bellmont s attitude towards Frado is not completely out of pure cruelty, in my opinion most
of it is influenced from the economical context in the nineteenth century of America. After all in
the post slavery period of north America, economics was, First and last, of crucial significance.
After the abolishment of slavery in the North blacks were forced back into being subservient into
technically free labor, Because they were given food and shelter. The context of this paragraph
shows signs of this theme, like the conversation between Mr.Bellmont and Mrs.Bellmont : I ll beat
the money out of her, if I can t get her worth any other way, retorted Mrs. B. sharply. (Willson 90).

Human Gait Essay
Abstract ABSTRACT One of the main goals of computer vision research is to develop methods for
recognition of objects and events. A subclass of these problems is the recognition of humans and
their activities. Recognition of humans from arbitrary viewpoints is an important requirement for
different applications such as intelligent environments, surveillance and access control. Human gait
is an attractive modality for recognizing people at a distance. Human gait is a spatio temporal
phenomenon that characterizes the motion characteristics of an individual. There is an increased
interest in gait as a biometric, mainly due to its nonintrusive as well as non concealable nature. It is
possible to detect and measure gait even in low... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The goal of gait recognition research is to determine how that information can be extracted from
images. The fact that each person seems to have a distinctive (idiosyncratic) way of walking is
hardly surprising from a biomechanics standpoint. Human ambulation consists of synchronized
integrated movements of hundreds of muscles and joints in the body. Although these movements
follow the same basic pattern for all humans, they seem to vary from one individual to another in
certain details such as their relative timing and magnitudes. Much research in biomechanics and
clinical gait analysis (among others) is devoted to the study of the inter person and intra person
variability of gait (albeit not for the purpose of recognition, but rather to determine normal vs.
pathological ranges of 3 Introduction variation). The major sources of inter person variability are
attributed to physical makeup, such as body mass and lengths of limbs, while the sources for intra
person variability are things like walking surface, footwear, mood and fatigue. Nonetheless, the
gait of any one individual is known to be fairly repeatable when walking under the same
conditions. This intra person consistency and inter person variability are what makes gait suitable
(desirable) for use as a biometric. In this proposal, we present a gait recognition technique which
takes a motionbased recognition approach, and use correspondence free

The loose cinematic retelling of the novel Mildred Pierce into a more marketable noir murder

thoughts of the characters. In the novelJames Cain utilizes a third person limited perspective,
allowing the reader to know Mildred s thoughts and emotions. As a result the meaning of the story

In both stories Mildred gives everything she has for Veda. She devotes all her energy searching
for a job to support Veda s expensive lifestyle. Here the difference in perspective between the two
versions greatly changes the significance of her actions. In the film she is rejected from every
job until accepting the chance to be a waitress without hesitation. In the novel Mildred is
presented with multiple job opportunities. Despite these openings Mildred rejects them and is
repulsed by the idea of menial labor. The reason being is because she is terrified by how Veda
will look down on her for doing such work. It isn t until she realizes the graveness of her
situation that she resigns herself and accepts the job as a waitress. Access to Mildred s internal
conflict in the novel during her search greatly changes the meaning of her actions. Her
willingness to be a waiter in film characterizes her as a mother willing to do anything for her
daughter s wellbeing. Mildred rejecting similar positions and shamefully accepting the job in the
book characterizes her as more concerned with what her daughter will think of her than actually
taking care of her. When Veda discovers Mildred s job as a waitress she mocks her. Both
versions of the story have Mildred striking Veda to punish her and breaking down into tears after

If a burger, fries and Sprite are blended together and tested for monosaccharides, starches, proteins

will contain protein and there are a lot of fats or lipids in the oil used to fry the fries.
If chutney is tested for monosaccharides, starches, proteins and lipids, then it will test positive for

According to the acting school stop website, Chekhov s views on the job of the actor was not to

must be able to act with ease, bring form and beauty to their creative expressions, and see the big
picture so they can convey it in their performance, (Michael). This site goes on to discuss the things
that his Method consists of. Discussed first is the idea of allowing the body to be trained to be
receptive so that it can convey the inner life and emotions of a character to the audience. Chekhov
thought that method acting was very unhealthy for the actor and stunted creativity and inspiration
for a character. He instead wanted actors to get into the mindset of the character and learn to
understand why they do what they do through analysis. He encouraged students to go into the world
and watch real people interacting with each other and with the world around them to draw
inspiration for themselves. His method consists of a lot of inner analysis, meaning using your brain
and your own creativity and imagination to explore the characters reality. It also suggests that an
actor should learn to imagine their environment and its atmosphere/ conditions to better understand
the physicalizations of the character. For example, if its cold outside, or

The Council doesn t even have to get permission from families of the private graves, or even

Council spokesman John Wade, said the local authority does not currently reuse graves but may
in the future. A similar scheme is already in place in the City of London, Cemetery Crematorium,
where more than 1,500 graves have been reused. The 161 year old cemetery was on the verge of
running out of space when officials decided to begin reusing graves in 2009. It has proven to be
a popular choice, with over 60 per cent of burials there now in reused graves. Trevor Davis,
Westminster cemeteries manager, believes the most effective way to stop cemeteries from
overflowing is by reusing graves. He said: New graves can continue to be developed on an
indefinite basis as required through overfill/overvaulting and through reuse. To avoid reusing
graves, some cemeteries in London have created new burial plots. A Greater London Authority

by demolishing chapels and clearing land. Even so, the entire authority of Lewisham will run out

Interpretation Of Daimon In Greek Literature
Overall, the analysis of Greek literature reveals several ideas that are helpful in understanding the
demonology referenced in the New Testament. The different interpretations of daimon are fluid and
should not be expected to be completely consistent. Daimones are widely recognized as
intermediate beings, between the gods and men, and could be good or bad. Although Platogenerally
perceived them as being good, after his time there was a tendency to assign evil actions to them.

Daimones were characterized as general deceased souls, and then turned into guardian spirits. They

social setting. The mother figure focuses on two main categories in her guidance, social manners
and domesticity. First, guidance is given for a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Written in 1983, Kincaid narrates the thoughts and moral beliefs of the time by her mother. In
Girl, Kincaid uses repetition of the term slut to emphasize that her mother did not want her to
develop a bad moral reputation (Kincaid 118 119). Later in the narration though are her mother
s thoughts on abortion, this is how to make a good medicine to throw away a child before it
even becomes a child (Kincaid 119). It shows that while the mother instructed her in moral
principles, she also understood that things happen to a young woman. The practical nature of this
instruction seems to indicate more modern thought while still living in a society of traditions.
Another hint of the time period is the mention of divorce and how to live after it, this is how you
love a man...and if they don t work out, don t feel bad about giving up (Kincaid 119). This could
indicate that divorce is an accepted practice in the more modern society that Jamaica Kincaid
wrote Girl in. The location of the story plays a large role in understanding the character s
interactions. The story opens with instructions on cleaning clothes upon a stone heap (Kincaid
118). In 1983 America, most households would have already had washing machines or at least a
wash board and bucket rather than the older form of washing clothes at the river and utilizing
stones. The next

Objectives Of The New Deal
The New Deal In 1929 the United States and the rest of the world were beginning to deal with the
Great Depression. During these hard times, many people believed that the federal government
should have a larger role in the economy. These beliefs led to the election of Franklin D.
Roosevelt. In President Roosevelts inaugural speech, (1933) he first used the great phrase, ...the
only thing we have to fear is fear itself... He needed to strengthen our nation and boost the
confidence of the citizens. It is because of these realities that Franklin D. Rooseveltand his advisors
created The New Deal.
Key Objectives of The New Deal The New Deal was made up of three main objectives. These
objectives were relief, recovery, and reform. As a country, we needed relief and recovery from the
great depression. Unemployment was through the roof, farmers were struggling to succeed, and
our economy was in shambles. Agencies and programs were created to help alleviate these
problems and create jobs. Agencies were also created to reform industry and banking practices that
had a large hand on our path to The Great Depression.
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) A great example of one of the relief programs would be the
Civilian Conservation Corps. The idea was to take young men and provide them jobs in forests,
infrastructure, and other public projects. This not only provided work for the young men and their
families, but also helped us rejuvenate our natural landscape. The Civilian

Cognitive Dysfunction
DISCUSSION
Decline in cognitive function after surgery, particularly in the elderly, has been anecdotally
appreciated by the profession and public for many years. It is a well established phenomenon after
hip, knee, abdominal, cardiopulmonary bypass and recent research reveals it to be a surprisingly
common outcome after other types of major surgery.
Cognition is defined as the mental processes of orientation, perception, memory, and information
processing, which allows the individual to acquire knowledge, solve problems, and plan for the
future. It comprises the mental processes required for everyday living and should not be confused
with intelligence. Cognitive dysfunction is thus impairment of these processes16 .It is usually

In (2012)22 Postler A, Neidel J et al conducted a prospective cohort study of 60 patients older
than 65 years (66.7% female, 33.3% male) who received THR. The cognitive function was
measured preoperatively, one week and six months postoperatively by the mini mental state test
(MMSE). Shortly after surgery 4 patients (6.7%) developed postoperative cognitive dysfunction,
which has recovered at six months follow up. In 41 patients (68.3%) adverse effects were
recorded. Postoperative anemia occurred as the most common adverse effects (n=32; 53.3%).
They noted that during postoperative hospital stay older patients were at an increased risk for
adverse effects. Rudolph JL, Jones RN, Rasmussen LS et al in (2007)23 conducted an
International Study of Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction recruited patients undergoing
noncardiac surgery from 8 countries. In bivariable analysis, several vascular risk factors were
significantly associated with the likelihood of delirium, including male sex, exposure to tobacco,
previous myocardial infarction, and vascular surgery. After adjustment for age, tobacco exposure
and vascular surgery were independent vascular risk factors for delirium. In addition, This study
said male sex is at vascular risk factor and vascular

Graphic Design And Visual Arts
Graphic design and Visual arts are two different artistic fields. The field of Graphic design, which
is responsible for creating solutions that, has a high visual impact. The role involves listening to
clients and understanding their needs before making design decisions. Designs by graphic
designers are required for huge variety of products and activities, such as websites, advertising,
books, magazines, posters, computer games/video games, product packaging, exhibitions and
displays. Visual artson the other hand are art forms such as ceramic, drawing, painting, sculptures
and photography and architecture. The difference in visual arts and graphic designis that many
people do not think of graphic designers as being artist and they should only be referred to as
designers. Visual Arts People, argue that designing is a skill and art is a God given gift. Graphic
design majors are artist because it takes talent to do what they do; it takes hard work to create
complex graphics. They have to come up with a design by sketching it out. Then graphic
designers have to bring their art to life using the computer. Both visual artist and graphic
designers have a passion for art. They are both creative professions to pursue. Some people argue
that Visual Art people are more hands on with their work; they use a lot of physical ability to do
their art. Graphic designers use technology to do more of their art. They use objects such as
images, symbols, and words to complete

Phantom Limbs Essay
Phantom Limbs
Phantom Limb Pain (PLP) is a serious condition that occurs when a person who has lost a part of
their body though amputation, trauma (brachial plexus), or loss of nervous connections in an
appendage, perceives that the limb is still there and experiences sensations coming from this area.
It was first described in 1866 by S. Weir Mitchell, an American neurologist, through a short story
published in Atlantic Monthly. While Mitchell may then have wondered if this was specific to
wounded Civil War soldiers, it has since been established as quite common (1). Over 70% of
amputees report phantom limb pain for years after amputation (2). Several theories have been
proposed regarding PLP, although there is still much to be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Data indicated that PLP is related to, and may be a consequence of, plastic changes in the primary
somatosensory cortex, and that the shift of the cortical map following amputation might be a
potential neurophysiological basis of PLP (6).
Further studies in 1998 investigating the re mapping component in the brain were conducted by
researchers at the University of Toronto and The Toronto Hospital. The study recruited amputees
who experienced phantom pain for surgery to map the sensory areas in the brain. During the
mapping process, the conscious patients reported sensations they felt when certain areas of the
thalamus were stimulated. Patients reported phantom sensations when areas of the thalamus were
stimulated that formally were innervated by neurons from the missing arm, and also when areas on
the stump were stimulated that activated these reorganized regions in the brain. Neurons were
shown to continue to carry out their original roles, but with different sources of activation (7).
While persuasive, the aforementioned experimental conclusions are well critiqued by Ronald
Melzack who argues against looking to the somatosensory cortex or thalamus as the only cause of
phantom pain in his April 1992 Scientific American article. He states: Such changes in the
somatosensory thalamus or cortex could explain why certain feelings arise in limbs that no longer
exist or can no longer

  • 3. The Usefulness Of The Canadian Senate David C. Docherty s scholarly journal responds to the continual controversy and debate of the usefulness of the Canadian senate in 2002. Docherty s article does an amazing job at analyzing the current Canadian senate and argues that the senate is a failing Canadian institution because of two democratic deficiencies: the undemocratic nature of senator selection and the inability of senators to represent provinces properly (45). These two features of why the senateis a failing Canadian institution can be compared to how Rand Dyck defines democracyin Canadian Politics: Critical Approaches. Docherty looks at several previous senate reforms and answers the question of why these senate reforms failed, in doing so Docherty lays down a framework for a possible successful senate reform but acknowledges the obstacles. Docherty does a very good job at accessing the problem of the senate, accessing the problem of previous reforms, and suggesting a plausible type of reform for the senate. This provides the reader with the knowledge of why the Canadian senate is a failing institution but also the possible solutions of how the senate can be reformed in order to maximize its democratic potential. Although, Docherty fails to provide an exact reform that needs to be taken, he just draws upon other failures and hypothesis that this may be the right solution for reform. Rand Dyck s chapter 11 fills in the missing gap of reform that needs to be taken by drawing upon one of the best attempts at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Did Milgram s Original Experiment Have A Good Design Or... 1. Did Stanley Milgram s original experiment have a good design, or was it flawed? Stanley Milgram s original six degrees of separation experiment was flawed because it did not account for key factors that are essential to statistical experimentation. An example of the key factors that Milgram failed to consider in his experiment is the sampling method. Using a voluntary response sample Milgram formulated his conclusions. However, as often happens with voluntary response samples, the experiment s success depended completely on who participated thus skewing the actual accuracy of the six degrees of separation that Milgram claimed resulted from the the findings of his original experiment. Furthermore, Milgram s sample method carried over in how he started the letter trains. While Milgram s original data averaged this mythical six intermediaries this fails to justify the concept for a few reasons. First, in order to draw conclusions from experimental data we must ensure we have a right sample size. In this experiment drawing conclusions from only two successful chains is not an accurate representation of the data as the sample size is extremely small and many of these chains, in fact, failed utterly. Furthermore, Milgram s justification of six degrees of separation is based on only those people in Wichita which continues the trend of sample size misuse in this particular Milgram experiment. Since Milgram failed to see the accuracy issues in his experiment we can definitely conclude his original data does not justify the concept of six degrees of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. A Symbolic Activity Essay Memorialization as a Symbolic Activity There is a growing awareness that addressing past injustices are crucial for the process of healing and reconciliation. In order to move towards a peaceful future, governments must acknowledge and respond to the wrongs and injustices of the past. While there is an agreement between people that the process of reconciliation must acknowledge the wrongs of the past and the victims, many scholars debate about how such acknowledgments are best communicated, so that they will be sufficiently credible and effective in improving future relations. In fact, many argue that memory is crucially important as a response to past injustices, especially when dealing with human rightsviolations. Memorializing the past, through memorials, commemorative ceremonies, etc., is widely promoted as a valuable way of redressing the wrongs of the past. But what kind of redress can memorials provide, and how can they advance in transitional justice? Indeed, I consider these symbolic reparations to be a double edged sword due to the strengths and weaknesses, it presents as a practice for redressing the losses that were suffered by victims. In recent years, forgiveness has attracted attention as a possible response of victims to perpetrators in past violent human rights abuses. Moreover, transitional justice focuses on the effective and legitimate ways of addressing past wrongs and moving towards achieving political reconciliation and re establishing societies ... • 7. Modernism In Langston Hughes s The Negro Speaks Of Rivers Modernism was a philosophical movement that occurred in America and England during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This era is distinguished by the break with traditions of literary forms, styles, and concepts, giving creation to an assortment of cultural, art, and political movements. Perhaps nobody took as full of an advantage of the concept of modernismas poets did, expanding the possibilities of their works to unimaginable lengths. Poets such as Langston Hughes, William Carlos Williams, Gertrude Stein, and many others employed literary devices to portray important messages that they often buried in their works. From the use of these literary devices such as metaphors, imagery, and symbolism these poets were able to portray concepts of race, class, and gender in the Modernism era. Written at the age of seventeen, The Negro Speaks of Rivers by Langston Hughes illustrates the historical journey of the African Americanrace to America (Socarides). By using rivers as a metaphor for the source of life, Hughes outlines the movement of African American race from the Nile and Euphrates rivers in Africa to the Mississippi. Hughes subtly expresses his admonition of slavery and racism in the line My soul has grown deep like the rivers (Line 4). The line first appears in the poem when it follows the speaker s statement that he has known rivers ancient as the world and older than the/ flow of human blood in human veins (Lines 2 3). Both his poems Dulce et Decorum estand Futility explore the psychological, physical and the futile costs that war brought upon us. Owen s poetic skills, vivid language and sensory imagery express his bitter animosity of those who encourage war in Dulce et Decorum and the pointlessness of war and perhaps life itself in the poem Futility. Psychological Owen writes with an eloquent style and his use of poetic techniques accentuate the brutal destruction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Futility starts with Move him into the sun . The verb move is an inexact word however, we feel the movement has to be gentle in contrast to Dulce et Decorum est where the body was flung into the Wagon. Straight away we are able to see the contrast of how Owen presents physical death in both poems. Both poems abundantly use imagery in slightly differently ways; Dulce et Decorum est the imagery is vividly graphic and grotesque done deliberately to make us feel uncomfortable. The first stanza begins with soldiers trudging through the ubiquitous sludge and the dual adjective knock kneed shows physical exhaustion and fatigue of the young men that instantly reverses this idea of them being noble and healthy fighting. Followed by the visceral imagery the blood come gargling from the froth corrupted lungs . This effectively recreates the scene Owen witnessed to involve the audience by encouraging them to hear at every jolt the physical horror the soldiers suffered and invoke their pity. Owen uses imagery more subtle in Futility. He creates this repetitive image of the sun as having revitalising ability to bring back the dead and present the realness of physical death on ... I will be describing the plot, both the historical accuracies and inaccuracies, the film themes, and my opinion of the acting, all on the 1992 film. I was completely impressed with this film. Not having read the book I cannot compare the two, however I can compare what I saw with actual events from that time and what I saw. All great parts of the story, yes, however, if you were watching The Last of the Mohicanspurely for historical purposes and to find out things about the war, you wouldn t learn much. Yes, the movie (and the book as well I m sure), does depict for the most part of what I could tell, everything accurately. It is the point of it not showing enough about this huge event in our history. How did the war get started? Who won the war? What all tribes and alliances aided both sides? There are a lot of left out details, unfortunately, which makes it hard to follow the details of the French and Indian war. For example, the fight between Magua and his Indians against Munroe and the English was quite a bit less violent than what is led to believe. Not to forget, we are not shown the reaction of Montcalm in finding out his Huron Indians disobeyed him in letting the English go safely. Also, the deepest inaccuracies I do believe come from what the book had written and what the movie chose to tell us. Those things aside though, it is a marvelous film. Yes, there are some inaccuracies in this film and probably even in the book, however, for a Hollywood production, I think they outdid themselves (did amazing). • 24. Our Nig By Harriet Wilson Harriet Wilson s novel Our Nig, follows the life of Frado, a young mulatto girl in the household of a white family in New England. She is abandoned to this family at the age of six because her mother could not afford to care for her and resented her and the hardships to which her birth had contributed. The mistress of the household to which Frado is left is a cruel and spiteful woman, especially towards blacks. When Frado is left in the care of the Bellmont residence as a young girl, she has no idea of the troubles she would have to face for most of her life. From the very beginning, neither Mrs. Bellmont, the main antagonist, nor her equally cruel daughter, Mary, show any hint of compassion or even mercy for the young girl. The story follows Frado and her life in the Bellmont household. Mr. Bellmont s attitude towards Frado is not completely out of pure cruelty, in my opinion most of it is influenced from the economical context in the nineteenth century of America. After all in the post slavery period of north America, economics was, First and last, of crucial significance. After the abolishment of slavery in the North blacks were forced back into being subservient into technically free labor, Because they were given food and shelter. A subclass of these problems is the recognition of humans and their activities. Recognition of humans from arbitrary viewpoints is an important requirement for different applications such as intelligent environments, surveillance and access control. Human gait is an attractive modality for recognizing people at a distance. Human gait is a spatio temporal phenomenon that characterizes the motion characteristics of an individual. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The goal of gait recognition research is to determine how that information can be extracted from images. The fact that each person seems to have a distinctive (idiosyncratic) way of walking is hardly surprising from a biomechanics standpoint. Human ambulation consists of synchronized integrated movements of hundreds of muscles and joints in the body. Although these movements follow the same basic pattern for all humans, they seem to vary from one individual to another in certain details such as their relative timing and magnitudes. Much research in biomechanics and clinical gait analysis (among others) is devoted to the study of the inter person and intra person variability of gait (albeit not for the purpose of recognition, but rather to determine normal vs. pathological ranges of 3 Introduction variation). The major sources of inter person variability are attributed to physical makeup, such as body mass and lengths of limbs, while the sources for intra person variability are things like walking surface, footwear, mood and fatigue. Nonetheless, the gait of any one individual is known to be fairly repeatable when walking under the same conditions. This intra person consistency and inter person variability are what makes gait suitable (desirable) for use as a biometric. In Girl, Kincaid uses repetition of the term slut to emphasize that her mother did not want her to develop a bad moral reputation (Kincaid 118 119). Later in the narration though are her mother s thoughts on abortion, this is how to make a good medicine to throw away a child before it even becomes a child (Kincaid 119). It shows that while the mother instructed her in moral principles, she also understood that things happen to a young woman. The practical nature of this instruction seems to indicate more modern thought while still living in a society of traditions. Another hint of the time period is the mention of divorce and how to live after it, this is how you love a man...and if they don t work out, don t feel bad about giving up (Kincaid 119). This could indicate that divorce is an accepted practice in the more modern society that Jamaica Kincaid wrote Girl in. The location of the story plays a large role in understanding the character s interactions. The story opens with instructions on cleaning clothes upon a stone heap (Kincaid 118). In 1983 America, most households would have already had washing machines or at least a wash board and bucket rather than the older form of washing clothes at the river and utilizing stones. • 40. Objectives Of The New Deal The New Deal In 1929 the United States and the rest of the world were beginning to deal with the Great Depression. During these hard times, many people believed that the federal government should have a larger role in the economy. These beliefs led to the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt. In President Roosevelts inaugural speech, (1933) he first used the great phrase, ...the only thing we have to fear is fear itself... He needed to strengthen our nation and boost the confidence of the citizens. It is because of these realities that Franklin D. Rooseveltand his advisors created The New Deal. Key Objectives of The New Deal The New Deal was made up of three main objectives. These objectives were relief, recovery, and reform. As a country, we needed relief and recovery from the great depression. Unemployment was through the roof, farmers were struggling to succeed, and our economy was in shambles. Agencies and programs were created to help alleviate these problems and create jobs. Agencies were also created to reform industry and banking practices that had a large hand on our path to The Great Depression. Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) A great example of one of the relief programs would be the Civilian Conservation Corps. The idea was to take young men and provide them jobs in forests, infrastructure, and other public projects. This not only provided work for the young men and their families, but also helped us rejuvenate our natural landscape. The Civilian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Cognitive Dysfunction DISCUSSION Decline in cognitive function after surgery, particularly in the elderly, has been anecdotally appreciated by the profession and public for many years. It is a well established phenomenon after hip, knee, abdominal, cardiopulmonary bypass and recent research reveals it to be a surprisingly common outcome after other types of major surgery. Cognition is defined as the mental processes of orientation, perception, memory, and information processing, which allows the individual to acquire knowledge, solve problems, and plan for the future. It comprises the mental processes required for everyday living and should not be confused with intelligence. Cognitive dysfunction is thus impairment of these processes16 .It is usually expressed ... The cognitive function was measured preoperatively, one week and six months postoperatively by the mini mental state test (MMSE). Shortly after surgery 4 patients (6.7%) developed postoperative cognitive dysfunction, which has recovered at six months follow up. In 41 patients (68.3%) adverse effects were recorded. Postoperative anemia occurred as the most common adverse effects (n=32; 53.3%). They noted that during postoperative hospital stay older patients were at an increased risk for adverse effects. Rudolph JL, Jones RN, Rasmussen LS et al in (2007)23 conducted an International Study of Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction recruited patients undergoing noncardiac surgery from 8 countries. In bivariable analysis, several vascular risk factors were significantly associated with the likelihood of delirium, including male sex, exposure to tobacco, previous myocardial infarction, and vascular surgery. After adjustment for age, tobacco exposure and vascular surgery were independent vascular risk factors for delirium. In addition, This study said male sex is at vascular risk factor and vascular ... • 42. Graphic Design And Visual Arts Graphic design and Visual arts are two different artistic fields. The field of Graphic design, which is responsible for creating solutions that, has a high visual impact. The role involves listening to clients and understanding their needs before making design decisions. Designs by graphic designers are required for huge variety of products and activities, such as websites, advertising, books, magazines, posters, computer games/video games, product packaging, exhibitions and displays. Visual artson the other hand are art forms such as ceramic, drawing, painting, sculptures and photography and architecture. The difference in visual arts and graphic designis that many people do not think of graphic designers as being artist and they should only be referred to as designers. Visual Arts People, argue that designing is a skill and art is a God given gift. Graphic design majors are artist because it takes talent to do what they do; it takes hard work to create complex graphics. They have to come up with a design by sketching it out. Then graphic designers have to bring their art to life using the computer. Both visual artist and graphic designers have a passion for art. They are both creative professions to pursue. Some people argue that Visual Art people are more hands on with their work; they use a lot of physical ability to do their art. Graphic designers use technology to do more of their art. They use objects such as images, symbols, and words to complete ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Phantom Limbs Essay Phantom Limbs Phantom Limb Pain (PLP) is a serious condition that occurs when a person who has lost a part of their body though amputation, trauma (brachial plexus), or loss of nervous connections in an appendage, perceives that the limb is still there and experiences sensations coming from this area. It was first described in 1866 by S. Weir Mitchell, an American neurologist, through a short story published in Atlantic Monthly. While Mitchell may then have wondered if this was specific to wounded Civil War soldiers, it has since been established as quite common (1). Over 70% of amputees report phantom limb pain for years after amputation (2). Several theories have been proposed regarding PLP, although there is still much to be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Data indicated that PLP is related to, and may be a consequence of, plastic changes in the primary somatosensory cortex, and that the shift of the cortical map following amputation might be a potential neurophysiological basis of PLP (6). Further studies in 1998 investigating the re mapping component in the brain were conducted by researchers at the University of Toronto and The Toronto Hospital. The study recruited amputees who experienced phantom pain for surgery to map the sensory areas in the brain. During the mapping process, the conscious patients reported sensations they felt when certain areas of the thalamus were stimulated. Patients reported phantom sensations when areas of the thalamus were stimulated that formally were innervated by neurons from the missing arm, and also when areas on the stump were stimulated that activated these reorganized regions in the brain. Neurons were shown to continue to carry out their original roles, but with different sources of activation (7). While persuasive, the aforementioned experimental conclusions are well critiqued by Ronald Melzack who argues against looking to the somatosensory cortex or thalamus as the only cause of phantom pain in his April 1992 Scientific American article. He states: Such changes in the somatosensory thalamus or cortex could explain why certain feelings arise in limbs that no longer exist or can no longer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
