Azure Backup Update

• Azure Backup now supports selective disk backup and restore using
Azure Virtual machine backup solution
• Status: Private Preview
• Today, Azure Backup supports backing up all the disks (OS and data) in a VM together
using the Virtual Machine backup solution. With exclude-disk functionality, you get an
option to backup one or a few from the many data disks in a VM. This provides an efficient
and cost-effective solution for your backup and restore needs. Each recovery point
contains data of the disks included in the backup operation, which further allows you to
have a subset of disks restored from the given recovery point during the restore
operation. This applies to restore both from the snapshot and the vault.

Azure Backup Update

• Azure Backup now supports selective disk backup and restore using
Azure Virtual machine backup solution
• Status: Private Preview
• This solution is particularly useful in the following scenarios:
1. You have critical data to be backed up in only one disk and you don’t want to back up
the rest of the disks attached to a VM. This minimizes the backup storage costs.
2. You have other backup solutions for part of your VM data. For example, you back up
your databases or data with a different workload backup solution, and you want to use
Azure VM level backup for the rest of your disks and data to build an efficient and robust
system utilizing the best capabilities available.

• Azure Backup—Soft delete for SQL Server in Azure VM and SAP
HANA
• Status: Private Preview
• Azure Backup now provides soft delete for SQL Server in Azure Virtual Machines and
SAP HANA in Azure Virtual Machines workloads along with the already supported Azure
Virtual Machines soft delete scenario.
• Soft delete is a security feature to help protect backup data even after deletion. With soft
delete, even if a malicious actor deletes the backup of a database, or backup data is
accidentally deleted, the backup data is retained for 14 additional days, allowing the
recovery of that backup item with no data loss. This additional retention of 14 days of the
backup data in the soft delete state doesn’t incur any costs.

Azure Monitor for virtual machines
• Upgrade to new solution for Azure Monitor for virtual machines
• Preview
• The new solution for Azure Monitor for VMs will soon be available in all regions. This
update will provide richer monitoring functionality and map data sets for Service Map
customers. Once it’s available in your region, it’ll be necessary to upgrade to the new
solution in order to continue using Azure Monitor for VMs. Disruption to your workflow
should be minimal since Azure Monitor for VMs is still in preview, compared to upgrading
after general availability.

• To upgrade to the new solution:
• Sign in to the Azure portal and navigate to Azure Monitor -> Virtual Machines.
• On the Get Started tab, select the subscriptions you wish to upgrade (all preferred).
• Click Upgrade Selected.

Azure Secure Score
• Azure Secure Score simplified
• Public Preview
• The secure score controls feature of Azure Security Center is now available in preview. It
groups multiple recommendations focusing on a specific attack surface (for example,
restrict access to management ports). This provides a more reliable method for
calculating the scores and gives you better visibility into how they’re calculated.
• Familiarize yourself with the secure score changes during the preview phase and
determine other remediations that will help you to further secure your environment.

• Azure Lab Services automatically installs GPU drivers with GPU
machines
• General Available
• Azure Lab Services now automatically installs the necessary GPU drivers for you when
you create a lab with GPU machines. You no longer have to figure out which GPU driver
to use on your own. The drivers are automatically configured and installed.

• General Available
• Azure Lab Services now enables multiple owners to manage a lab. In your lab account,
add people as owners or contributors to a specific lab. The people added will now be able

• Azure Lab Services—Virtual machine shutdown for Windows users
• General Available
• Azure Lab Services added the ability to automatically shut down virtual machines (VMs)
when a users’ remote desktop (RDP) session is disconnected. It’s possible to specify how
long the virtual machines should wait for the user to reconnect before automatically shutting
down. Currently, this feature is available only for Windows machines, and the Linux version is
in development.
