How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?

[OReilly Superstream] Occupy the Space: A grassroots guide to engineering (an...Jason Yip
The typical problem in product engineering is not bad strategy, so much as “no strategy”. This leads to confusion, lack of motivation, and incoherent action. The next time you look for a strategy and find an empty space, instead of waiting for it to be filled, I will show you how to fill it in yourself. If you’re wrong, it forces a correction. If you’re right, it helps create focus. I’ll share how I’ve approached this in the past, both what works and lessons for what didn’t work so well.

Concepts
There are two general concepts
On-Demand or Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG)
This is the “real” cloud model
Bring-Your-Own-Subscription (BYOS)
This is the idea to move your on-premise machines into the cloud
10. 10
Bring Your Own Subscription
Easily migrate your existing
subscriptions into Cloud
Direct access to SUSE Support.
Patching: Uses SUSE Customer
Center or you can provide your
own local update infrastructure.
Support agreement transfers
subscription to public cloud.
Provides the ability to purchase
add-on (Live patching etc.)
Fire up and use.
Pay as you go, for the time that
the instance is running.
Support initially (L1,L2) provided
by CSP. SUSE and CSP work
closely together (L3).
Repositories automatically
configured at boot.
Managed Lifecycle
Registered with and Updates via
local regional update server.
On-Demand(PAYG) BYOS
11. 11
A Word of Caution
There is no switching between BYOS and PAYG possible!
This means workloads that start with on-demand are stuck with on-demand. A desired switch
requires a re-build of the application landscape.
This is a limitation of the CSP—we have no influence on this.
BYOS and on-demand are not equal consumability. It must be taken into consideration. (e.g.
LTSS, Live Patching etc.)

Using and Finding Images
AWS
• In AWS images are found in the AWS Marketplace (SLES for SAP on-demand), the Quick
Launcher (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server on-demand), and the General Catalog (Community
AMIs) (all BYOS images and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server on-demand).
• Instances are created on the command line by specifying the AMI ID, part of the pint output.
Azure
• All images are found in the Azure Marketplace.
• Instances are created on the command line by specifying an URN, part of the pint output.
Google
• All images are in the Google Marketplace; also, on-demand images can be found in the Quick
Launcher.
• Instances are created on the command line by specifying the image name, part of the pint
output.

Other ways to find images
New workloads should always be started with
the latest images we have published.
• How to find the latest image with CLI?
- Pint [1] is a command-line tool to find images, provided
by python3-susepubliccloudinfo package.(Cloud:Tools
Repo)
- Also provides a python library that can be used by
customers to embed in their own in-house tooling.
- Accesses a REST API; customers can also access this
API directly.
- Server [2] and client [3] are in GitHub.

Reserved Instances
Reduce Cost
- significant discount (up to 75%)
- Pre-pay one-year or three-year terms
- flexibility to change the Availability Zone(AZ), the
instance size and networking type
- provide a capacity reservation(in specific AZ)
Different Naming
- Azure Reserved VM Instances (RIs)
- Amazon EC2 Reserved Instances
- GCP Committed Use Discounts(CUDs)

Image Lifecycle
1
2
3
Instance (product) lifecycle and the image lifecycle are different.
All active images are updated continuously on a rolling refresh
cycle.
All active images have an update process they follow,
but the details vary by license type (BYOS // On-Demand)
and product type (SLES for SAP // SLES).
