The music video will tell a narrative story of a singer trying to be with a woman he wants but faces unrequited attention, leaving their relationship ambiguous at the end. It will have a 1950s/60s style and take place in romantic and performance locations like Hampstead Heath and a school music room. The band will be dressed in leather jackets, jeans and stereotypical indie rock clothing to match the old fashioned visual style of black and white camerawork focusing on faces and bodies to convey emotions and mystery.
1. Music video idea
I think the song we’ve chosen ‘Do I Wanna Know’ by Arctic Monkeys should
have a 50/60s old fashion look which seems appropriate to the slow paced
romantic theme of the song. This presentation will cover my own ideas for
the music video.
2. Narrative
The music videos narrative will show the story of the singer trying to
be with the woman he wants and constantly bothering and offering to
be with her.
The beginning will introduce the singer and the band, then introduces
the woman he is talking about and shows how much he wants to be
with her but gets unrequited attention and isn't sure of her feelings
for him.
The ending of the narrative will not show if the couple will get
together or not because the singer doesn’t make it clear if that
happens in the song and I think it will be good for the audience
because it will leave the audience with questions, for example will
they get together.
3. Locations
There will be many locations in this music video, places such as the
Red Arches (Hampstead Heath) which will be for the narrative. I have
chosen this location to set the narrative between the singer and the
girl he is talking about in the song. The Red Arches is known to be a
romantic place and will connote to the theme of the song.
The schools music room will be used for shots of the band members
performing instruments used in the song e.g bass guitar, guitar. This
will show the band performing live which is common to this genre of
music, being indie/rock.
Another location is a shot of the singer against a brick wall which will
be used when singing the verses.
Carnaby Street can also be used because of its old fashion 60s
look, which relates to the style I’m trying to create for this video. This
will show the style and direction of the music video by showing scenes
of the band members in this type of area.
4. Costumes
In the music video, I think that the singer should be wearing a leather
jacket with a shirt, with skinny trousers. The band members would
wear similar clothes and also have a stereotypical indie rock style.
The person the singer is talking about, being the woman should be
dressed in a shirt with jeans and DM boots, maybe a bowler hat.
I would use this type of clothing and style to create the old fashion
feel because these are common stereotypes from that era.
5. Visual style of the video
Shot types:
Opening scene: Camera flashes with each beat of the
song, scaling the main males body with each flash, eventually
revealing his face by the guitar lines introduction. I would use
close up shots of the singers face to identify his emotions and
feelings towards the woman he's talking about in the song.
When introducing the female character into the narrative I would
use tracking shots of the woman's legs walking and close up shots
of her lips, eyes and hair to make her seem mysterious and
complicated.
Color:
The colour for the video should be in black and white to
emphasize the look and feel of the video looking 60's and
old fashion.
