4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Panini by Lil Nas X
The song is about Nas not understanding why Panini is
ignoring him and spends the whole time of the song
complaining about it.

Ben is crowded with a group of girls asking for photos
and autographs as Jodie walks past (not interested). Ben
is not paying attention to the girls and just looking at
Jodie walk past. The camera will be the opposite side of
the way Jodie is walking so it has all in the shot.

8. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant

14. POTENTIAL
TECHNIQUESFor one of the shots I want to use a car as a prop with
someone driving it looking at someone. As the car comes
towards the camera spin into a different scene, showing
a quick transition.
As the lyrics don’t start to be song until 0:12 I am
planning to do various shots of scenic views with intro
titles (like Love Me & Ransom – Lil Tecca).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLICuTGQMYA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XzY2ij_vL4
15. CONVENTIONS YOU
PLAN TO USE
•Many different places around Thirsk
The locations shown on the mind map please many others
including, abandoned areas (idea from Envy Me – Colboy).
•Booking out a camera and a tripod from College
•Using a drown for scenic views of Thirsk
•Getting 3/5 people in the video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhPvceQcfzE
17. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
•With premium I will be able to make some nice edits. For
example, make some colourful effects, intro/outro titles.
•With access from College I will be able to access a camera
and tripod which will help improve the quality of the shoot.
•As the song is very simplistic and has a quite easy core
meaning to it, I will be able to shoot a music video with
exactly the right meaning to it.
•With an abandoned place very close to where I live I will be
able to get some very nice shots in it. Very similar to the
music video Envy Me by Calboy.
• As the song is only 1:56 minutes long I wont have to shoot
to many scenes. This means I can focus more on the scenes
I am doing and prefect them.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhPvceQcfzE
18. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
•Having a low budget. This will restrict me from buying
props, location access and others.
•Not having much experience of shooting music videos. This
means it will be difficult to make a good video in general.
•Weather. For my music video it needs to be clear weather.
As we will be shooting near/in winter this will be hard to do.
•Getting people to feature in the video. People might be a bit
optimistic to feature in it as it takes time which they could
be doing something else. This also links with low budget
because I wont be able to pay them so that means they will
have low motivation.
•Not that much time. This will maximize the potential of the
shoot, and ultimately won’t be as good as it could be.
19. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Name of track / name of artist -
Panini by Lil Nas X
Brief biographical background -
American rapper who was raised up in Bankhead Courts
with his Mother and Grandmother after his parents divorced
in Lithia Springs, Georgia where he was born (Wikipedia)
Links to other artists -
The song is strongly similar to In Bloom – Nirvana which was
released in 1990
Genre info -
The whole aspect of the song is how people liked him when
he was small but now he’s big they don’t like him as much
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lil_Nas_X
20. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
The song Panini was created, written and sung all in one
night by Nas, The song meaning is how people liked him
when he was small but now he is big they don’t like him
as much. The pace is vey fast, this is similar to mostly all
of his songs. The song is only 1:56 which is quite short
compared to his others song (Old Town Road, Rodeo,
C7osure). Also this was his next song after Od Town
Road went number 1 on the charts which he quoted in
Panini “Now they need me, number one on streaming, oh
yeah, use to love me”.

21. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
Plenty of scenes will be filmed in an abandoned barn
singling out a male model. Sitting down, dancing,
holding a flare, slow motion walking, close ups and
distance shots. I got this idea of the music video Envy ME
by Calboy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhPvceQcfzE
22. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
Planning to do some shots at a beach (Redcar, Whitby or
Scarborough) with Nas mainly walking by himself being
lonely. Also some shots of close ups to his shoes
walking, dancing and also some shots of the sea. I got
these ideas from Noticed by Lil Mosey, Love Me by Lil
Tecca and What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLICuTGQMYA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJO3ROT-A4E
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nceqQyqIa5o
23. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
Similar to the abandoned barn location, I am going to
use a field to film the outro and several scenes in the
video. Manly going to include slow motions, flares,
interactions between the male and Panini, dancing and
close ups followed by distance shots again. I got this
idea from Ransom by Lil Tecca and produced by Cole
Bennett

25. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
26. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended
outcome
Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your
interpretation of it [remember the questions in the
workbook, e.g. pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment
requirements
Include any details that you think [you could use material
from your pitch]
27. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access,
cost, weather? How will you manage this?
28. LOCATIONS
Abounded Barns- This is a 3 minute drive from Town
Center so is easily manageable. Very easy to get into and
not that many people go there. Also regardless of the
weather it will be available as it is in shelter.
29. LOCATIONS
Lake Gormire- This is a 11 minute drive from Town
Center so is easily manageable in terms of getting their.
Access to this is slightly challenging but can easily be
achieved, as it’s a 10 minute walk from the car park
downhill. However if the weather isn’t clear I will not be
able to film as it is open and no shelter. Also another
drawback is it maybe quite busy with dog walkers and
people fishing.
30. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
31. FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other
specialist facilities…?
Premier in college will be the only editing software I will
be using.
32. PERSONNEL
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each
team members strengths/weaknesses? When are they
available?
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are
they available? Cost implications? Will you have to feed
them? Transport them?
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you?
Josh – able to drive so can go to extended locations,
however he works a lot so is limited.
Ellie – lives in Bedale so will be hard to find time as it is a
30 minute drive, however she doesn’t have a job so will
be availably more frequent than Josh.
35. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
36. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:
http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for-
hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
37. OPENING SCENE
Opening scene will be the main actor moving around
(dancing, slow motions and casual working) in the
abounded barn with a flare. This is a good place to film
as the lighting is very good as there is plenty of light
holes and is in shelter. This idea is off Envy Me music
video by Calboy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhPvceQcfz
38. SEA SCENES
Another scene will be at the beach front (either Whitby,
Redcar or Scarborough) with the main actor walking
around lonely and wanting Panini. Also with close ups to
his shoes with shots of the actual sea. This will be quite
difficult to film as the weather has to be clear which will
be quite difficult to plan with it being pre winter.
Shots
of
The
sea
Walking
Lonely
Close ups to
The shoes
39. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
40. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
41. INRO (0:00–0:12)
Intro scenes will be shot in 3 different
Locations. All will be close ups to the
Face and shoes, distance shots and
Slow motions of Actor 1. Then right
Before Verse 1, Actor 2 has a close up
To the face walking.
42. VERSE 1 (0:12-0:25)
Actor 1 waving at Actor 2 as she gets interrupted
She turns around and goes on to her phone, with
Actor 1 being on her phone trying to get her
Attention.
44. CHORUS (1) (0:36-0:50)
Actor 1being lonely with his hands
Out dancing and confused with
Actor 2 close up confused.
45. VERSE 2 (0:50:1-1:02)
Actor 1 chucking a Panini sandwich in the
Air and hitting it with a baseball bat.
Holding up index finger symbolizing he’s
No. 1.
Hands out not understanding
46. REFRAIN (2) (1:02-1:14)
Actor 1 driving away in slow motion with him
Being upset. With him holding up his middle
Finger.
47. VERSE 3 (1:14-1:26)
Actor 1 sat on his boot lonely,
Then actor 2 comes and he gets
Really excited and starts waving
Then actor 2 walks away trying
To get away from him
49. OUTRO (1:40-1:55)
Actor 1 holding two flares in each hand
Whilst he is dancing.
Last 5 seconds is Actor 1 and Actor 2
Driving off together happy.
50. STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
59. SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.
62. PRODUCTION GROUP
INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested
-Joshua Romatowski – 07944 419901
-Ellie Canny – n/a
63. PRODUCTION
SCHEDULE
Provide an outline of what you will do on which days
during production
You should broadly plan to the following structure:
- 2 weeks pre-production
- 1 week filming [plan for up to 2 days]
- 2 weeks editing [essentially 2 days for every day you
filmed]
64. SCHEDULE
Day 1- Do all the shots at Lake Gormire
Day 2- Do all shots at Abandoned Barn
Day 3- Do every other shot needed for the film
66. PRODUCTION
RECORD/LOG
Keep track your filming and production work with the
camera here
You could add stills of your work with annotations
You should include any specific details about how your
filming went and what you did on set to enable you to
complete the work
You should include Call Sheets and relevant production
documents here
67. CALL SHEETS
This links with your schedule
