1. Music Video Analysis – Simple Plan “I’m Just a Kid”
The opening shots to the video “I’m Just a Kid” by Simple Plan are establishing shots, emphasising the location of the music video. The audience are introduced to the genre immediately when shown the instruments they are using which is a stereotypical feature associated with indie rock videos. Close ups are used to show the band, although the narrative incorporated within the video doesn’t involve the band members. Instead the storyline is about a new kid in an American high school who doesn’t fit the ‘popular’ stereotype. The lyrics are representative of the narrative, where the video challenges the stereotype of the good looking popular kid getting the girl, whereas in this case it’s the geek who gets the girl. The mise en scene is American themed, with the video location in a high school, showing features such as school bus, cheerleaders, school mascots and this idea of ‘geeks’ and ‘populars’.
The video is quite wreckless, showing that the band itself is dangerous with their music and their videos. The band members have tattoos and piercings, which is stereotypical of indie rock band members. The video involves lots of bright colours, giving the video energy, appealing to a young audience who can easily relate to the music genre.
9144001968500
