Music video Analysis
Track title: Try Everything
Artist: Shakira Isabel
Genre: Pop Genre
Film Soundtrack: Zootopia
Release date: 3rd March 2017
Music Video type:
It is a combination of both performance and narrative. It is also an
animated music video.
Narrative of the Music Video
This music video is from the animated movie “Zootopia” which
involves animals living a life that is very similar to humans. In this
movie, there is a female bunny named “Judy” who wants to join the
police force but because of her size and height, her fellow officers
make fun of her and even when she’s finally fulfilled all the tasks she
is still given a small duty, which was completelydifferent from what
she expected, however, at the end of the movie she proves everyone
wrong and finds out the bad guys and becomes the head officer.
This music video captures the entire progress of Judy and how
everyone used to make fun of her, but she proved everyone wrong by
her outstanding skills. The music video by lyrics also show that even if
you fall down, you should always be able to get yourself back up and
try again. The lyric “I wont give up, no! I wont give in till I reach the
end” go perfectly with the clips attached to it where Judy keeps falling
down while her policetraining but gets back up and becomes faster
than everybody else.

Media Message
The message that both the narrative and lyrics convey is that you
should never give up on your dreams. It emphasizes on the notion
that “no matter how small your are, always dream big”, and it keeps
reminding the audience that failure is a part of life and that no matter
what happens you can always start againand the next time you do, try
a little harder and each time you’re going to be close to winning.
It also tells the audience that they should never give up till they reach
the end and that each individual should try more than the times
they’ve lost because eventually success does come to you. I personally
found this that this song also tells the audience to be excellentin
whatever you do rather than just running after success, because once
you start running after excellence, success follows that individual
eventually. This was the similar case with the protagonist of the
movie that is “Judy” who eventually became the officer in-charge
because she never gave up on her dreams and proved everyone that
she can become anything she wants.
Representation
We as an audience have represented bunnies as cute
small fragile creatures that cannot be seen as tough or rugged but in
this movie with the use of a bunny as the main protagonist, many
stereotypes have been broken. It shows that no matter what you are,
you can be anybody that you want to be or you can accomplish your
dreams no matter how big they are for you.
Similar to the previous image, Rhinos are considered to be tough and
rugged creatures which is why they are used in this scene to break the
stereotype that you don’t need to be someone physically strong in
order to be a police officer which in other terms can also be seen as
that you don’t have to be a big person in order to accomplish your
goals.
Gender Stereotypes:
We can also see that with the use of a female bunny, gender
stereotypes are being broken as well because stereotypicallywe
always perceive women to be fragile and weak however in this movie
a female is shown to be the leading star and saves the entire town
from the chemicalthat is turning everybody into predators.
With the use of both, a female bunny is breaks many ideologies and
this music video becomes the perfect the example of postmodern
media.
Theories applied to this Music video
Andrew Goodwin:
Rule#1: Music video demonstrates genre characteristics
Rule#2: Relationship between lyrics and visuals
Rule#3: Relationship between music and visuals
Rule#4: Lots of close-ups of the Artist to develop motifs and star
image
Rule#5: Great use of Intertextual reference
Steve Archer:
1. Strong relationship between performance and narrative
2. Music videos cuts between a narrative and performance
3. There is a chorographical dance that is part of the music video
Uses and Gratificationtheory:
Music video has a purpose for the audience to discover: in this case it
is to discover the power that is present inside all of us to overcome
any obstacle in life no matter how small or big you are.
Sven-e-Carlson:
Binary opposites
Target Audience
For this music video, the target audience are both children and adults
because this music video is part of an animated movie, which attracts
a younger audience ageing 7 to 12 years old, however it also attracts
adults or teenagers because the media message that it conveys is
better understood by a teenage audience.
A larger audience understands the message that the music video itself
gives so it doesn’t necessarily mean that only childrenwill be
listening to this music. I am an 18 year old teenage and I still obsess
over this song because of the message that it portrays that is to “never
give up on yourself and your dreams.”
