The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Lana Del Rey – Video Games
Within Lana Del Rey’s video for ‘Video Games’ many elements of Goodwin’s
theory are able to be consistently found throughout.
When applying Goodwin’s theory to this music video, looking into the musical
structure is important as it is the ‘first step’ in his “5 key features when analysing a music
video”. This song is made us of verse, chorus, verse, chorus, and then the chorus repeated.
This is a typical structure for a song, it can highlight the ‘mainstream’ idea which the song
and videos are implying surrounding the change of culture and society. The instruments
used are suggestive of the genre, using unconventional and not stereotypically ‘pop’ music
highlights the alternative nature of the artist and genre.
Opening the song with bells and a harp, using orchestral instruments (strings and
procession) and relying heavily on piano and harp throughout, whereas others are included
in moments of climax and fall within the song. Alternatively, there is use of a synthesizer at
some moments. This can prove as further evidence to suggest the difference of the times,
alike the lyrics and themes within the video.
The songs subject is a passionate expression of the difference which youth and teenage
culture has, and how this has changed throughout time and the loss of innocence. The main
message is highlighting the lack of innocence which today’s youth has. Not only are the
lyrics suggestive of this, contrasting “Swinging in the backyard” to “Open up a beer”, but this
coupled with Lana Del Rey’s unique, breathy, emotional and subtle voice gives the audience
an emotional connection to the lyrics and Lana Del Rey’s message.
Furthermore, the rugged and unkempt style of imagery and use of ‘home video’ which is
used in the video links to the past, the innocent times which are
portrayed throughout. Lana presents herself in the same quality of as the
home videos, only showing small clips of herself lip syncing broken up by
the imagery of the contrasting societies and eras, giving it a then-and-now
feel. By placing herself in the same grainy, low quality as the videos from
the past implies that she identifies and links more to the past generation
and that time over the present time.
The personal experiences and accounts which are told in the verses give
audiences a sense of storytelling through the song and Lana’s vacant
attitude is given reason. The use of clips including Paz De La Huerta
drunkenly stumbling along with a man holding onto her, this alongside the
imagery of a skaters and teens rebelling, contrasts the innocence of teens
shown to be jumping into a swimming pool and picnicking. This justifies

which are commonly linked with losing innocence, alike the generations.
Finally, the use of the personal pronouns, “you” and “he” make this video
less general, as I have implied, whereas this use of language give
implications of a more personal and direct address. As said before the
ideas surrounding storytelling are personal although by using open
phrases the story can also be incorporated by the listener to fit their own
experiences. This is also shown through the visuals as there are a ranges
of age and gender represented throughout the video allowing audiences
to find something to identify with.
