ANALYSIS – FINE
CHINA BY CHRIS
BROWN
About Fine China
This music video by Chris Brown and is a R&B disco song. This is something
that is different to a lot of the songs that he has produced, the majority of
which are Hip Hop/rap.This song was released Apr 1, 2013.Throughout this
music video there is a story being told. The main character in the story is
played by Chris Brown and this character is most likely meant to be Chris
Brown himself.
Link between lyrics and visuals
The first link between the lyrics and the visuals
is when Christ brown sings the words ‘Life is
just a game but I’m not playing’.As he is
singing these lyrics there is a visual of some
kind of card or board game being played. This
is only seen for about 1 second, just to show
the link between the lyrics and visuals.
There aren’t many links between the lyrics and
visuals throughout this music video, in fact
there are only a few that I have noticed. This is
because the music video is a narrative video
and is a story that isn’t really related to the
lyrics
Genre Characteristics
This music videos covers many of the general
characteristics of an R&B track however it also
differs from the some the usual styles that would be
found in this particular genre. The first difference
from the usual R&B style and what Chris Brown
would normally go with is the way that he is
dressed. A lot of R&B music videos will have the
artist or whoever is in the music video would be
wearing jewellery and would be topless. However,
as you can see in the picture on the right he is
dressed up pretty smart and not showing his body.
The way that he is dressed compared to the usual
dress code of a male R&B track suggests that he is
trying to make it a little bit more classy and trying
to go against the usual conventions of this genre
and a lot of the other music videos that he has
made.
One R&B characteristic which this track by Chris brown does not
included is the overall jazz feel of the song. A lot of R&B tracks have
a very jazz feel about them and will very often include is the
saxophone laced beat to emphasise this to the audience. Giving the
track an overall smooth feel. However this track is a bit more
upbeat and has a slight hint of disco along side the R&B theme.
Although it does include a drum-machine backed rhythm it has
been lifted up a bit, allowing it to have a slightly more dance vibe
about. But throughout the song there is an electric guitar playing a
tune and this does support the slightly slower R&B theme that the
song is aiming for.
Genre Characteristics continued
One convention of a R&B music video which
you often see, especially with the males in
this genre is the tattoos. Although in this
music video Chris Brown doesn’t have his
top of, you can still see clearly the tattoos on
both his arms. This is something which is
common with music videos by this artists
and in this genre, showing that there are
some features of this genres
Narrative MusicVideo
Throughout this music video there is a story that
is being told and it is actually a love story. The
video starts of without the song for the first
minute. In this minute the setting of the story
being made and you get an understanding of
what is going on.You are introduced to the girl,
that is part of the love story, and her dad. Then
when she says “You don’t even know him” to
which her dad reply’s “I know enough, he’s an
outsider, thug”. From this you are able to work
out that they are talking about the other side of
the love story, Chris Brown.
This first seen allows the audience to understand
what is going to be happening in the video and
who the main characters of the story are going
to be.
Narrative continued
Then there is an over the shoulder view of the girl looking
out the window, where a Lamborghini has just pulled up
outside. The next shot of this scene shows someone getting
out of the car, and then the audience are able to see the
main character, Chris Brown. 10 seconds after this seen (56
seconds), once the girl has walked out and left her father the
music finally starts. Since the setting of the narrative has
been set and that the audience is aware of who exactly the
main characters are, then the story is able to get going and
properly start.
Then the drive to what seems to be some kind of meet up
down a big alley. Here there is a contrast between the posh
girl that he has brought with him and the underground
looking meet up.
