Hook/Attention Grabber:The average high school dropout rating is a staggering 35.3% based on statistics pulled from edweek.org.<http://www.edweek.org/ew/dc/2013/gradrate_trend.html>

Hook/Attention Grabber (cont’d): Music has been proven to be vital in the educational system, especially for those who are teens and above. Earlier introduction into the lives of students, can ultimately determine if they excel to
graduation, or decide to become a part of the already staggering dropout statistic.
“Those who cannot change their minds cannot change
anything.”

The big idea:The main purpose of this presentation is to not attempt to change your mind, but to open your mind to new and creative ways to keep students in school through the use of music.
An investment in education,
pays the best interest.

What’s in it for the audience?
I feel that education is vital to the success of our nation, our future, and those who inhabit the United States of America. Without education there is no future for our economy, citizens, generations to come, and generations thereafter.

Credibility: As a high school student, I found that one simple course allowed for me to relax, focus, and get a break from the workhorse load of acedemics that high school students face today. As a student in such an environment, and as
an audience of students before me, you can relate to the stress of the hammer of learning that was brought down upon us throughout our childhood.
Not everyone is bred to be a athlete, some of us
have a musical gift granted to us from birth, that
we need to embrace at an early age.

Call to adventure: As of right now, schools are cutting back music courses in schools due to the rising cost of equipment, and lack of funds for education provided by our state and national government. We must take action now in order
to enrich our students, not drive them away from education.

Three main points:
•
(Main point 1) Music has been scientifically proven to nourish the sensory of the brain
•
(Main point 2) Improves early cognitive development, math and reading skills
•
(Main point 3) Music helps the mind, heart, body, and soul relax and for a short moment, and takes us away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. (Zen)

VH1 Mission:

We are dedicated to restoring instrumental music education
in America's public schools, and raising awareness about the
importance of music as part of each child's complete
education.

Supporting Point 1: According to VH1’s Save The Music foundation, music, when brought to students during the early stages of the brain’s development process, can ultimately nourish and help promote brain cell development.

Students in music courses scored:
!

22% better in English
20% better in Mathematics

Factual Evidence: Students in top-quality music programs scored 22% better in English, and 20% better in math than students who were either in deficient or no music programs throughout their academic year.<Journal for Research in
Music Education, June 2007; Dr. Christopher
Johnson, Jenny Memmott>
Throughout middle school I took a classical music
appreciation course in which I played Cello.

Emotional Evidence: As a student, I had two music course choices in Middle/High School: Band and Strings. I chose to go with strings due to the band course lacking quality equipment, a highly qualified teacher, and one who stuck to
the curriculum. At times, I’d glance into the classroom as I walked by and saw that no learning had been taking place and that everyone were just sitting around and talking. This reflected their actions and progress in the classroom.
Music cleanses the
understanding; inspires it,
and lifts it into a realm which
it would not reach if it were
left to itself.

Supporting Point 2: Through the use of different tones, notes, and tempo, students will be able to connect such sounds to that of speech, therefore improving memory and the ability to learn new words based on the “tempo”,
“note” (syllable), and “tone” (way a word is to be read or spoken)

Factual Evidence: According to a study conducted by Dr. Laurel Trainor, young children who take music lessons show different brain development and improved memory over the course of a year…”(Laurel Trainor, 2006)

Music taught me:
Memory Skills
Patience
Recollection
Critical Thinking Skills

Emotional Evidence: As a strings student, we often had to perform songs for exams without sheet music. This was very difficult, but taught us the ability to think on our feet (in case of an emergency), improved brain memory and
recollection, as well as continued use of memory and brain stimulation that journeyed along with it.

“Music produces a kind of pleasure which
human nature cannot do without”
-Confucius

Supporting Point 3: Music will allow for students to relax and have a break from the everyday stresses of life, school, and put their minds at ease, even though it may only be for a short period of time, over time, it will help them mentally
learn how to grasp and control their emotions.
Music consists of more exploration,
rather than discipline.

www.salimphoto.com</a> via <a href="http://
compfight.com">Compfight</a> <a href="http://

Factual Evidence: Music is described as “More exploration than discipline” by independent music teacher Bradley Sowash in the article Music Makes Your Child Smarter (Music Teachers National Association, 2007) If we allow for
students to explore different forms of education and approaches to it, rather than force feed them text, then we may be able to relate to students on an more personal level so that they will be more open to discussing their education with
instructors. (Music Teachers National Association, 2007)

Factual Evidence: Based on a study conducted by NICU, classical music that was played for newborn children lead to a result in a decrease in ambient noise, decreased stressful behaviors, has soothing and stimulating affects, leads to a
better nights sleep, and also slows the heart rate to slightly below normal rates. (HealthMED, 2012)

Call to action: We need to start intertwining music and education today so that we will be able to create more unique, intelligent, individuals tomorrow. Let’s make a stand today, start working today, so that we can enrich our lives, our
children’s lives, and future generations to come.
Conclusion

Summary of main points: To conclude, music helps us in more ways than we can ever imagine, it helps stimulate our memory, opens our minds to new ideas and ways of doing things, helps us to relax, and can even help us improve our
language and mathematical comprehension skills.

Restatement of big idea: With this presentation, I hope that we have opened up our minds to bringing forth music into our education curriculums, thought of how it can help brighten both our and our children’s’ futures, and help to keep
our students engaged in learning, and open the doorway to their creativity and individuality. Thank You!!!

(Clincher/New Bliss) Music is what brought me here today, it’s what brought me to Full Sail University in pursuit of a MBBS Degree, brought me out of the darkness of poverty and into the light of well-earned success, and help to
improve my life in such a way that I’ve truly dedicated myself to it.

  • 2. “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” -Plato Photo Credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/ photos/10158670@N00/6941441940/">cpence</ a> via <a href="http:// compfight.com">Compfight</a> <a href="http:// creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/">cc</ a> Hook/Attention Grabber (cont’d): Music has been proven to be vital in the educational system, especially for those who are teens and above. Earlier introduction into the lives of students, can ultimately determine if they excel to graduation, or decide to become a part of the already staggering dropout statistic.
  • 3. “Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” ― George Bernard Shaw Photo Credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ 58385162@N05/5980752930/">Mahin Fayaz</a> via <a href="http://compfight.com">Compfight</a> <a href="http:// creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/">cc</a> The big idea:The main purpose of this presentation is to not attempt to change your mind, but to open your mind to new and creative ways to keep students in school through the use of music.
  • 4. An investment in education, pays the best interest. -Benjamin Franklin Photo Credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/76029035@N02/6829290065/">Victor1558</a> via <a href="http://compfight.com">Compfight</a> <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/ by/2.0/">cc</a> What’s in it for the audience? I feel that education is vital to the success of our nation, our future, and those who inhabit the United States of America. Without education there is no future for our economy, citizens, generations to come, and generations thereafter. !
  • 5. Photo Credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ 53807034@N05/5511772726/">hmomoy</a> via <a href="http:// compfight.com">Compfight</a> <a href="http://creativecommons.org/ licenses/by/2.0/">cc</a> Credibility: As a high school student, I found that one simple course allowed for me to relax, focus, and get a break from the workhorse load of acedemics that high school students face today. As a student in such an environment, and as an audience of students before me, you can relate to the stress of the hammer of learning that was brought down upon us throughout our childhood.
  • 6. Not everyone is bred to be a athlete, some of us have a musical gift granted to us from birth, that we need to embrace at an early age. -William Dodd Photo Credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/ photos/ 26691915@N00/4248987472/">rolands.lakis </a> via <a href="http:// compfight.com">Compfight</a> <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/ by/2.0/">cc</a> Call to adventure: As of right now, schools are cutting back music courses in schools due to the rising cost of equipment, and lack of funds for education provided by our state and national government. We must take action now in order to enrich our students, not drive them away from education. !
  • 7. Music helps free the mind, heart, body, and soul Photo Credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ 94509941@N00/35003141/">beggs</a> via <a href="http:// compfight.com">Compfight</a> <a href="http:// creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/">cc</a> Three main points: • (Main point 1) Music has been scientifically proven to nourish the sensory of the brain • (Main point 2) Improves early cognitive development, math and reading skills • (Main point 3) Music helps the mind, heart, body, and soul relax and for a short moment, and takes us away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. (Zen)

Supporting Point 1: According to VH1’s Save The Music foundation, music, when brought to students during the early stages of the brain’s development process, can ultimately nourish and help promote brain cell development.

  • 10. Throughout middle school I took a classical music appreciation course in which I played Cello. Photo Credit: <a href="http:// www.flickr.com/photos/ 15577588@N00/2222966741/">chrisbb@ prodigy.net</a> via <a href="http:// compfight.com">Compfight</a> <a href="http://creativecommons.org/ licenses/by/2.0/">cc</a> Emotional Evidence: As a student, I had two music course choices in Middle/High School: Band and Strings. I chose to go with strings due to the band course lacking quality equipment, a highly qualified teacher, and one who stuck to the curriculum. At times, I’d glance into the classroom as I walked by and saw that no learning had been taking place and that everyone were just sitting around and talking. This reflected their actions and progress in the classroom.
  • 11. Music cleanses the understanding; inspires it, and lifts it into a realm which it would not reach if it were left to itself.  ~Henry Ward Beecher Photo Credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ 71078118@N00/2102264370/">Joel Bedford</a> via <a href="http://compfight.com">Compfight</a> <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/ 2.0/">cc</a> Supporting Point 2: Through the use of different tones, notes, and tempo, students will be able to connect such sounds to that of speech, therefore improving memory and the ability to learn new words based on the “tempo”, “note” (syllable), and “tone” (way a word is to be read or spoken)

This was very difficult, but taught us the ability to think on our feet (in case of an emergency), improved brain memory and recollection, as well as continued use of memory and brain stimulation that journeyed along with it.

  • 15. Music consists of more exploration, rather than discipline. Photo Credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ 43419254@N06/4409680890/">© Salim Photography/ www.salimphoto.com</a> via <a href="http:// compfight.com">Compfight</a> <a href="http:// creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/">cc</a> Factual Evidence: Music is described as “More exploration than discipline” by independent music teacher Bradley Sowash in the article Music Makes Your Child Smarter (Music Teachers National Association, 2007) If we allow for students to explore different forms of education and approaches to it, rather than force feed them text, then we may be able to relate to students on an more personal level so that they will be more open to discussing their education with instructors. (Music Teachers National Association, 2007)
  • 16. Music played for children leads to/causes: ! • • • • • Decreased ambient noise Decreased stress Soothing affects Better sleep Slower heart rate Photo Credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ 42164301@N00/500561280/">hyunlab</a> via <a href="http://compfight.com">Compfight</a> <a href="http:// creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/">cc</a> Factual Evidence: Based on a study conducted by NICU, classical music that was played for newborn children lead to a result in a decrease in ambient noise, decreased stressful behaviors, has soothing and stimulating affects, leads to a better nights sleep, and also slows the heart rate to slightly below normal rates. Let’s make a stand today, start working today, so that we can enrich our lives, our children’s lives, and future generations to come.
  • 18. • 19. “Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” ― George Bernard Shaw Photo Credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ 58385162@N05/5980752930/">Mahin Fayaz</a> via <a href="http://compfight.com">Compfight</a> <a href="http:// creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/">cc</a> Restatement of big idea: With this presentation, I hope that we have opened up our minds to bringing forth music into our education curriculums, thought of how it can help brighten both our and our children’s’ futures, and help to keep our students engaged in learning, and open the doorway to their creativity and individuality. Thank You!!!
