He was in early 1817 on one of the plantations of Maryland. The identity of Douglas
s father and exact date of birth is not well known, but it is assumed to be a white
man from a family who owned his mother. Harriet Bailey originally named his son

Fredrick Douglas went to the North and was married to Anna Murray, a black

Throughout the semester I have learned a lot about my strengths. At first, I had no
clue what they were. I also had no clue that they can help explain why certain
people work well in a group together or why they don t. My strengths have helped
me adjust to life as a college student and even helped me to figure out what I want to
do after my college career is over. Events like the HeritageProject, The Student
Leadership book, the networking event, and even the peer mentor presentations gave
me a lot to think about when considering my future. This class has helped me
develop my leadership skills and grow as an Otterbein student by allowing me to
better understand myself.
Throughout this semester I have encountered many different situations that I have
never experienced before. I wasn t hesitant about starting college but once I got
here I found it a little overwhelming. I didn t know about many of the resources that
are on campus and classes were very different from what I expected them to be.
FYS Goal one, found on the strengths reflection paper guidelines is, To connect you
to the resources that promote belonging, wellness, personal development, and
success in the first year . I feel as though FYS 1025 has helped me meet that goal
because I now know about many of the resources centers here. I learned about them
through Jordan s peer mentor moments, whether she was talking about the Center
for Student Success or the CCPD. Jordan s peer mentor moments helped me locate
the different resource around campus and even understand what they were about.
Even though I haven t been to some of them, I was able to help people not in our
class find them and know what those resources are about. This has helped me grow
as a student because it increases my familiarity with campus and allows me to know
that if I have a question there are people that can provide me with information.

Twirling has always been an important part of my life, so I was devastated when I
failed to make the Senior High School Majorette Squad my freshman year. For a
brief second I was ready to give up, but my love for the sport would not allow me to
surrender. I began practicing every day hoping to improve my skills. Just when I
began to show some progress, I suffered a traumatic brain injury and was forced to
put my goal of making the squad on hold. The extent of my injury was severe.
After weeks of no improvement, I was forced to start my school s homebound
program and begin intensive physical and vestibular therapy. It took several months
before I began to feel better, and eventhough tryouts were just weeks away, I was

types of learning have some similarities, but are also unique in several ways.
Classical conditioning is the pairing of two stimuli, whereas operant conditioning is

(Hockenbury, et al., 183). Observational learning occurs through observing the
actions of others. Cognitive learning is a behavioral change based on the acquisition
of problem solving abilities along with intelligence and conscious thoughts

In William Peter Blatty s novel, The Exorcist, a thirteen year old girl becomes ill.
The mother, Chris MacNeil, believes that her daughter is possessed by a demon
after doctors are unable to diagnose the child. Mrs. MacNeil seeks help from Father
Karras after the doctors tell her to go to a priest. Father Karras, a priest and
psychiatrist, declined the idea of performing an exorcismon the girl after Mrs.
MacNeil asked him for the favor. Father Karras tried to reason with Mrs. MacNeil
that the girl, Regan MacNeil, was likely to have a mental illness. Father Karras
finally agreed to perform the exorcism after he was unable to diagnose Regan. In his

Besides the doctors who tried diagnosing Regan, Father Karras suggested that Regan
had split personality and tried to explain it to Chris:
The human brain contains, say, seventeen billion cells... we see that they handle
approximately a hundred million messages per second; that s the number of
sensations bombarding your body. They not only integrate all of these messages,
but they do it efficiently... Now imagine that the human body is a massive ocean
liner... all of your brain cells are the crew... Now the captain is you, it s your waking
consciousness. And what happens in dual personality is that one of those crew cells
down below deck comes up on the bridge and takes over command. In other words,

Father Karras suggests that Regan has multiple personalities rather than being
possessed because he believes that an exorcism is not the solution for what Regan is
experiencing. Chris is told that her daughter is not possessed, but she is sick. In
order to find the correct illness, Chris took Regan to multiple doctors so that they
could properly diagnose her. The first doctor that Regan went to gave her an
electroencephalograph, or an EEG, which shows the doctors the pattern of her brain
waves and would indicate abnormal functioning of the brain (Blatty 108). With the
test being done on Regan, the doctor hoped to find symptoms that could match an

Although there are efforts to put an end to child labour in the world of today, they
does not seem to be enough. This is because even though there is a decrease in the
number of children that experience child labour, the change is not significant. The
level of child labour continues to increase. Presumably, in the societies where child
labour is the way of life, only few individuals master the courage to speak against it.
Unfortunately, their voices are unheard. For instance, in India there are efforts to
lessen the number of child labourers, but culture always gets in the way. This results
in children working under very poor conditions that pose a danger to their health on

Examples Of Conformism In One Flew Over The Cuckoo s
Society
The Oregon Mental Institution and Welton Academy are the oppressive institutions,
which use a variety of methods to subdue the characters into conformity. Inside of the
institutions, there are two main oppressive forces that have power over everyone:
Nurse Ratched and Mr. Nolan. In both institutions, the oppressors use many similar
methods to subdue the characters. These methods include manipulation,
intimidation, and imposition of strict rules set by the staff. In One Flew Over the
Cuckoo s Nest, Nurse Ratched uses manipulation and intimidation to control the
patients on the ward; therefore, allowing her to have power over all the patients.
This is evident when Nurse Ratched catches Billy sleeping with Candy Starr;
although he is able to get the confidence to stand up to Nurse Ratched, she says
what worries me Billy, is how your poor mother is going to take this, resulting in
Billy losing all his confidence to the Nurse, as she uses his mother to manipulate him
into not rebelling against her. Ultimately, she causes Billy to commit suicide because
of the way Nurse Ratched and his mother make him feel. Similarly to this example, in
Dead Poet s Society, Mr. Nolan uses Mr. Keating s students parents to subdue them
into conformity. When he speaks to the students, he often uses their parents by asking
how the boys parents would feel if they got expelled, which the boys knew would
have a negative result, forcing them to conform to the standards that the school has.

The Dependence of Our Society on Technology
During the past two decades technology has seen an explosive progression. In this
time we have come from very few people having personal computers, let alone those
that were able to connect to the internet to having the equivalent of multiple of these
machine in our pockets connected to the internet at all times. In today s society many
people opt to use their mobile deviceover a traditional computer and these devices
make it rather appealing and easy to do so. With applications that are built to make
life easier, games to waste a few minutes, movies and music at the touch of a finger
who wouldn t chose this over the alternative! The problem is when we become too
dependent on these devices. Do we really need to be connected twenty four hours a
day? Is this technology restricting our ability to be productive without it? Can the
users succeed in everyday activities like traveling without these devices? This is a
very new topic for argument but one that needs to be thought about and analyzed.
What society must realize is that we are becoming too dependent on these devices
and need to make reasonable concessions or preparations in the case of a failure.
When we take a look at the uses of these devices we will find that they have an
absolute plethora of uses. Smart phones can be used for the original use of making
phones calls, but that is really the simplest use of the device. We can actually use
these devices to replace GPS systems and aid in navigation, play video games,
