What Is a Complete Broadcasting Package?
Early on we realized that the only way to provide a complete broadcast package for our label partners was to

and Play Network—do not accept automated submissions, we needed to dedicate an ongoing team of workers to

What Is Synchronization?
The use of music in film, TV, video and webcast production involves two aspects of copyright law:
synchronization rights and performance rights. Performance Rights come into play when a production is shown
to the public, typically via broadcast or cablecast. Performance rights are primarily of concern to film
distributors and TV and cable stations. Synchronization, or “sync” rights, in contrast, are involved whenever
recorded music is used in combination with visual images in a production. Sugo Music Group manages both
your Performance Rights and Sync Rights portfolio for any and all broadcasts. Since the use of music in film,
TV, video and webcast is not covered by the compulsory license provisions of the Copyright Act, sync licenses

QWhat if I am already working with a distributor and my music is already on digital download sites, but I want
to make a switch to Sugo Music Group?
A:It’s actually more simple than you might think. It’s often just a matter of “flipping the switch” on your
current distributor’s website or contacting your distributor directly to terminate your agreement. Also remember
that we are the only distributor offering A-La-Carte distribution services! If you already have a distribution deal
in place, no problem. Just let us know and we’ll fill in the gaps! Either way, we can help—just contact us.
QDo I need to own the rights to my music?
A:Yes, you need to either own, control or administer the master sound recording rights in order to sign a
distribution agreement with any distributor—especially with us. It’s OK if you did not write any of the songs on
your music albums or in your archive, but you must have authority to license the master audio recordings for us
to provide universal music distribution for your works.
QHow long does it take for my music to go live in the stores?
A:Sugo Music Group is known for having the fastest turnaround time for any major music distributor.
Depending on the size of your archive and how much processing we need to take on, the time can range
from one week to four weeks.
QHow do I get my music and information to you and secure digital music distribution?
A:First, please contact us by email by filling out the “Contact Us” form in the right sidebar of this page.
Once an agreement is in place, you will be able to send your files in several different ways. Typically label
partners simply upload files to our secure FTP site, or sometimes they choose to send us a hard drive. Either
way is fine. We’ll always send a Welcome Package to you via email and guide you through the process. We’ve
simplified the process in a way that will help set up your account with us with minimal effort.
QWhat if I don’t have physical CDs of my music?

A:That’s perfectly fine. Many licensors do not manufacture CDs these days and focus solely on online audio
distribution. Digital files are preferred anyway. Our Welcome Package will explain it all. Also, if you want, we
can produce and manufacture CDs for you using our CD On-Demand system.
QCan I still sell my music on my site?
A:Sure, that’s fine! Sugo Music Group’s mission is to provide a Complete Distribution Portfolio for each of
our label partners. This is an ongoing commitment. Figuring out how to distribute music is an art form and takes
years of practice, just like practicing your music for live performances. Our distribution networks and delivery
systems are monitored, reviewed and refined on a daily basis. It is important that all of our label partners are
successful and thriving. If you want to sell your music on your site—CDs or downloads—we completely
support those efforts. It is important to us that this is a win-win situation for both parties!
QWhen will I receive royalties?
A:We send statements and royalty payments out to you on a quarterly basis. We’ll send your statements via
email, and your royalty checks can be by mail or direct deposit—you choose.
QWhat if I submit a cover song?
A:Cover songs are great! In fact, some of the most successful songs that we distribute, relevant to
downloads and streams, are cover songs. Cover songs are an easy way to attract new audiences and to expand
your fan base, demographics and psychographics. We will even handle all the third party composer/publishing
payments for you.
QWhat if I find a mistake associated with one of my songs/albums on a download site or if I want to remove a
song down from a site?
A:That’s fine and it happens occasionally. Just contact us, and we’ll fix it or, we’ll take it down for you.
What is streaming radio airplay?
A:There are two primary ways to deliver audio these days: downloads and streaming. In downloads, an
audio file is stored on the user’s computer. Streaming audio is not stored, only played. In the early days of
streaming media—the mid-to-late 1990s—listening to music online wasn’t always fun. It was a little like
driving in stop-and-go traffic during a heavy rain. Streaming audio (and video) has come a long way since then.
The success of streaming media is fairly recent, but the idea behind it has been around as long as people have.

Tell me how to get music copyrighted, how to copyright songs, and how to copyright music online.
A:First, let’s start with some important info regarding US copyright. Copyright law defines much of the
music business, influencing the practices of recording, touring and distribution deals. Congress understands the
importance of the music business, passing and amending copyright laws for decades to help manage the music
industry. Still, many artists have very little information regarding copyright and rely on knowledge about laws
that have changed dramatically through the years. Keep in mind that “song” copyright is distinct from the
“sound recording” copyright. As a rule, the sound recording can be thought of as the “master” (the recorded
performance of the song). That said, registration is not required for a valid copyright. That’s right! You actually
do not need to register your copyright with the United States Copyright Office in order to have a valid
copyright. You have a valid copyright as soon as your song or sound recording is “fixed in a tangible medium
of expression”. This is a term used by the Copyright Act and means that your song or sound recording must be
recorded (e.g. released on CD, digital stores, YouTube, etc.). While not mandatory, physical copyright
registration of published music or recordings still has some benefits such as filing a lawsuit to enforce the
copyright or receiving statutory damages. Getting your music copyrighted (masters and songs) by simply
recording and distributing them is important, yet accurately registering them with “master” Performance Rights

A:Rates can vary from $1 to as high as $300 per 1,000 views. The current payout CPM on average is about

A:Three classifications of advertisement inventory are available:
Run of Content: Advertisers purchase ads targeted across the entire content network without regard to any
individual piece of category of content. These are generally direct response advertisers looking for performance.
The ads are often sold by advertising networks and exchanges. Rates are commonly around $1 CPM and consist
mostly of banner ads and sponsored links.
Run of Audience: Advertisers purchase video or display ads around content segmented into categories that
correspond to general audience appeal. An example could be “auto” or “basketball.” This inventory may be sold
by our advertising partner, the publisher or an affiliate. Rates are commonly $4 to $12 CMP for video preroll or
in video overlays.
Direct Sold: Brand advertises purchase premium: 15- and 30-second video prerolls (movie trailers, premium
commercials, etc.) directly from our advertising partner with stringent targeting and tracking requirements.
Rates are commonly $15+ CPM for video prerolls.

Album Compilations...GLOBAL MUSIC DISTRIBUTION
What?
Compilation products are the single most effective way of how to promote your music, how to significantly
increase digital music distribution, how to sell your music online and to build a Complete Music Distribution
Portfolio.
Album Compilations is a general term used to refer to a music product made of up of songs not intended to be
seen as a single work. Compilation albums—frequently referred to as “comp(s)”—are often made up of tracks
by various artists, though they can sometimes feature a single artist, a collection of works from a music label or
targeted lifestyle themes. A comp can be a retrospective, greatest hits or a sampler of an artist’s career, a
collection of unreleased tracks or some combination of these. Comp tracks are usually collected according to a
common characteristic, such as popularity, genre, source or subject matter. Compilation albums may also
employ traditional product bundling strategies.
How?
Compilation products can be challenging to assemble because the production company that releases the comp
must secure permission from all of the parties involved. This can mean juggling demands of a long list of
publishers, labels and musicians, who sometimes have divergent interests. This fact is true even of single-artist
compilation albums for artists who have worked with more than one label over the course of their career. In
addition, there are graphic design work, metadata consistency, UPCs, quality control, audio level consistency,
promotions and more.
Why?
Compilations serve a purpose—especially now, during this digital era. Comps provide “pathways” for
consumers to discover and embrace the work of new and even established artists. For instance, with a 10-artist
targeted album compilation, each artist is exposed to 10x the potential consumer base as with a single-artist
album. Some of those artists might have a larger fan base as well, increasing the potential fan base
exponentially. In addition, when an artist is discovered on a compilation, then the consumer can easily discover
the artist’s original albums—whereas this form of album promotion and discovery would never have happened

Common Types of Compilations:
Greatest Hits, Best Of or Singles collection albums—These are comps that gather together an artist’s or a
group’s best-known songs. If the artist or group continues to record, compilers commonly include one or more

material on the compilation.
Single-Artist, Rarities or B-Side collections: These are albums compiled from radio sessions, songs performed
by an artist exclusively for a film soundtrack or collections that combine multiple releases. Such compilations
generally target existing fans of the artist and have diminished mainstream appeal.
Various Artist-Themed compilations: These comps could be love songs, Christmas songs, etc. featuring a
particular instrument (such as saxophone or piano), and countless other variations.
Various Genre-Themed compilations: e.g. jazz, synth-pop, rock, etc. These might be from the same time
period (year, decade or era, for example), or incorporate a common theme.
Various Artist Hit compilations: This has been a very successful part of the album market since the early
1970s. Hit singles are gathered together on one comp.
Promotional compilations or samplers: These are creative, successful forms of promotion for artists and/or
record labels to promote their music.
Private Label promotional compilations: Promotional compilation CDs can be private labeled for products,
retail outlets, commercial organizations or non-profit organizations. Some artists and labels like to co-brand
themselves with well-known brands for marketing purposes, and transversely, well-known brands like to co-
brand themselves with artists.
Composer/Producer albums: Many hip-hop and reggaeton producers will release a compilation album that
features various artists, but with each track composed by the same producer.

QSomeone told me a long time ago that compilations will dilute my original album sales. Is that true?
A:That might have been true a long time ago, yet the industry consensus is that compilations ONLY benefit
music labels and artists here in the digital era. Comps will dramatically increase your overall sales revenue,
your exposure, your popularity and also the amount of channels in which your music can be available.
QWhat do you mean when you say that compilations will increase the amount of channels available to me?
A:An artist’s album has the potential to be available for many different types of channels and markets:
broadcast (Pandora, SiriusXM, etc.), territory sub-licensees and sub-distributors (Canada, India, USA, Japan,
etc.), production libraries (Rumblefish, APM, etc.) and more. Yet some of these entities are choosey. In fact,
each entity could reject your original album—it happens every day. For instance, Pandora accepts only a small
amount of submissions—definitely not 100% (more like 30%). Targeted album compilations increase your
chances of acceptance. Recent example: We submitted works from one of our label partners to various
licensees and sub-licensees, and almost none of their works were accepted. We were not discouraged, and
instead we created and submitted multiple “best of,” “artistic,” “genre-based” and “thematic” compilations of
the label’s works. the licensees selected most of these new compilations because they were targeted and
individually prepared by our experienced A&R staff for those specific channels.
QDoes it cost me any money for you to make compilations or to include my music on various compilations?
A:No, we do not charge any additional fees, charge-backs or any sort of added-on costs. We are the only
company in the world—that we know of—that produces quality compilations for our label partners!
