Mexican folk music known as Son started in the 17th century with Spanish and African influences, typically featuring string instruments and played in rural areas or cities with foot stomping. Ranchera originated as solo guitar and singing during the Mexican Revolution but is now a form of Mariachi, taking influences from waltz, polka and bolero with lyrics about love, nature and patriotism. Mariachi bands include guitars, violin, harp, drums and trumpet and originated in Jalisco, found at most Mexican celebrations with famous songs like "Cielito Lindo" and "La Bamba."
