The Carolinas were created as a new colony north of Florida and south of the Chesapeake Bay to honor King Charles II. It included North and South Carolina and later Georgia. To increase colonists and economic development, the Lords Proprietor offered settlers large land grants and freedom of religion. The colonist population grew from 200 to over 6,600. Native Americans were turned into slave catchers and traded animal hides, slaves, and guns with the colonists in exchange for goods like cloth and rum. Georgia was established as a new colony south of the Savannah River by the Georgia Trustees to alleviate English poverty, initially prohibiting slavery, though it was later permitted which increased the population.
