Compartments of thigh
The muscle of anterior
compartment include
Sartorius
Quadriceps femoris
Articularis genu
Sartorius
Most superficial muscle
Longest strap muscle in the body
origin: tendinous fibres from the ASIS and the upper
half of the notch below it
it descends obliquely through the thigh
from the ASIS to the medial surface of
proximal shaft of tibia
Insertion : The muscles fibres form a thin
and flat tendon which expands into a
broad aponeurosis
The aponeurosis is attached to the
proximal part of the medial surface of the
tibia in front of gracilis and semitendinosus
The upper end of the aponeurosis arches
backwards over the top of the gracilis
and semitendinosus tendons
Action
Abductor and lateral rotator of thigh
Flexor of leg at knee joint
Sartorius draws the lower limb into the
sitting tailors position(thigh flexed laterally
rotated and abducted, knee flexed)
Nerve supply
By a branch from the anterior division
of the femoral nerve(L2-4)
Pes anserinus
Comprises of tendons of sartorius,
semitendinosus and gracilis each of which is
supplied by a different nerve (femoral,
obturator and tibial respectively)
Referred to as guy ropes
Main function is to provide stability and weight
distribution of the pelvis on the femur and tibia
by having a guy ropes arrangement
Quadriceps femoris
Consists of four parts
Vastus lateralis
Vastus medialis
Vastus intermedius
Rectus femoris
Rectus femoris
Origin
Straight head: from Anterior inferior iliac spine
Reflected head: from groove above the
margin of the acetabulum and capsule of
hip joint
Insertion
Base of patella anterior to the vastus
intermedius
Action
Extensor of knee
Flexor of hip joint
Kicking muscle
Nerve supply
Femoral nerve
Vastus lateralis
Origin: Upper part of intertrochanteric
line
Anterior and inferior borders of greater
trochanter
Lateral lip of gluteal tuberosity
Upper half of lateral lip of Linea aspera
Insertion
Lateral part of the base of patella
Upper one-third of the lateral border of
patella
Expansion to the capsule of knee joint,
tibia and iliotibial tract
Action
Extends knee joint, helps in standing,
walking and running
Nerve supply
Femoral nerve
Vastus medialis
Origin
Lower part of intertrochanteric line
 Spiral line upper two-thirds of the medial
 Medial lip of Linea aspera Upper one-
fourth of medial supracondylar line
Insertion
Medial one-third of the base
upper two-thirds of the medial border
of the patella, expansion to the
capsule of knee joint
Action
Extends knee joint, prevents lateral
displacement of patella.
 Rotates femur medially during locking
stage of extension of knee joint. Action is
extremely important for stability of patella
Nerve supply
Femoral nerve
Vastus Intermedius
ORIGIN
Upper three-fourths of the anterior
and lateral surfaces of the shaft of
femur
Insertion
Base of patella
Action
Extends knee joint
Nerve supply
Femoral nerve
Articularis genu
ORIGIN
Anterior surface of femur
INSERTION
Suprapatellar bursa/synovial
membrane of knee joint
Action
Pulls the synovial membrane upwards
during extension of the knee, thus
preventing damage to it
Nerve supply
Femoral nerve
Muscles of posterior
compartment of the
thigh
(Hamstring muscles)
Semitendinosus
Semimembranosus
Biceps femoris
Adductor magnus
Characteristics of hamstring muscles
Origin from ischial tuberosity
Insertion into one of the bones of leg
Supply from tibial part of sciatic
nerve
Flexor of knee and extensor of hip
joint
Semitendinosus
ORIGIN: Inferomedial impression on upper part
of ischial tuberosity in common with long head
of biceps femoris
INSERTION: Into the upper part of the medial
surface of the tibia
Nerve supply: tibial part of sciatic
nerve
Action: flexor of knee
medial rotator of leg in semi
flexed knee
weak extensor of hip
Semimembranosus
ORIGIN: From the superolateral impression
on the upper part of the ischial tuberosity
INSERTION: Into the groove on the
posterior surface of the medial condyle
of the tibia
Nerve supply: tibial part of sciatic
nerve
Action: flexor of knee
medial rotator of leg in semi
flexed knee
weak extensor of hip
Biceps femoris
ORIGIN
Long head: from the inferomedial impression on
ischial tuberosity in common with semitendinosus
Short head: from the lateral lip of Linea aspera
between adductor magnus and vastus lateralis
From upper two third of the lateral
supracondylar line
Nerve supply: long head by tibial part
of sciatic nerve
Short head by common peroneal part of
sciatic nerve
Action: flexor of knee
lateral rotator of leg in semi
flexed knee
weak extensor of hip
Adductor magnus
ORIGIN: lower part of ischial tuberosity
Lower part of ramus of ischium
INSERTION: medial margin of gluteal
tuberosity
Linea aspera, medial supracondylar line
and adductor tubercle
Nerve supply: Hamstring part by
tibial part of sciatic nerve
Action: ISCHIAL PART CAUSES
flexor of knee
weak extensor of hip
