The story is about an old failed singer who receives a call offering him a replacement concert gig at the Olympia theater, replacing another singer who had a heart attack. He eagerly practices and prepares, anxiously awaiting a possible telegram cancelling the gig if the other singer recovers by noon. At noon, there is a knock at the door, and a telegram is delivered. He reads it with trembling hands in front of his anxious wife. Upon reading it, he exclaims in triumph that it's nothing important - his mother just died, so the concert is still on.
