IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE MOST MERCIFUL AND BENEFICINT
ARTICLE ON: CONSCIENCE AND PHYSICALITY

CONSCIENCE AND PHYSICALITY
“But Mithan hold her from arm with electric speed and throw her on
charpoy by force. He was so wild animal at the moment that he tore
the kamiz of Miran into pieces without knowing about consequences.
The inner wolf of lust increased his beast like urge and he did all”1.
“The torn off kamiz and semi-dying eyes of Miran
were crying with sky touching shrikes, Mithan, Mithan the name of his
beloved.”
Depression, hopelessness and extreme sense of loosing is dominant on
Mithan while Miran is consistent in stopping him and promising him for
marriage with consent of parents.
Tantalization in Mithan is leading that is present in Basanti when she,
after long famine and dry season inquires about the arrival of rain as
omen of life for people of Goth.
Mother of Basanti console her daughter by saying that Wali(saint) will
come with bundles of rain in his hands. In the same way, Miran
consoles her lover with a promise that she will agree her mother as the
love bond is strong between mother and daughter.
The question is why Mithan does not take words of Miran as promise.
Perhaps the economic status of the two is crucial and this concept
enhances frustration and lust in him and he destroys her and calls her
death by raping the daughter of Sardar of Goth.

Same tantalized situation is present in Blouse by Sadat Hassan Manto
where Momin is going through a critical phase but is mum. The sole
reason of concealing his true emotions and sentiments is his financial
status as in words of Manto ‘Momin is a servant (Nokir).’
Compensation and adjustment of strong desire of love rather touch is
shown:
“At night when he again came to the room to put sarahi (vase), he saw
same blouse in wooden hanger. No one was present in room. So
moving ahead, first he closely looked at it then fearfully moved his
hand over it. By doing so, he felt as if someone touching his body as
softly as touch of air 2”.
Economic status is deciding force and proved itself as powerful social
taboo to restrict and ban the sea of sentiments.
But in case of Train to Pakistan by Khushwant Singh situation differs just
like U turn. Here Hukam Chand is highly rich person and wants love
making with a singing girl Haseena. There is no problem and no person
to stop him. Why he cannot fulfill his desire or his lust? Possible reason
is his unconscious and the age factor of the teenager girl who is just like
his dead daughter. Here a dead person is rescue for an innocent girl.
The following passage shows lust of Hukam Chand towards Haseena:-
“Hukam Chand could hear his breathing quicken. He undid the strap of
the girl’s bodice.”
“He picked her up from the table and laid her on the carpet amongst
the litter of tumblers, plates and bottles. She covered her face with
4. 4
loose end of her sari and turned it sideways to avoid his breath. Hokum
Chand began fumbling with her dress.3”
Opposite to this above mentioned situation is the condition of Esher
Singh in Thanda Ghosht by Sadat Hassan Manto.
“Esher Singh pulled her clothes off as skin off a goat. He stared her
naked body, pinched her arm and said
‘I swear to Wahegurru, you are some woman’.
He began his cruelty by kissing her lips and biting on her ear lobes. He
squeezed her breasts, spanked her buttocks red, kissed her cheeks, and
sucked her nipples wet. Kalwant Kour started to boil like a hot pot on a
blazing stove4”.
Here the relation is of husband and wife, a legal one. But Esher is trying
his level best to remove the ghost and image of a dead girl whom h
victimized and is facing consequences. All this is unbearable for Esher
as well as for his wife. Here question is not of relation, not of economy
rather the lust of a person that is wrongly fulfilled previously. In present
state his manliness is challenged by a female in response of cruelty
done to another woman.
Train to Pakistan by Khushwant Singh presents another scene of
sexuality where a Sikh boy Juggat Singh is eager to love making with a
Muslim girl Nooran. However the same desire of love becomes cause of
death for Juggat ultimately.
“Juggat Singh’s caresses became lustful. His hands strayed from the
girl’s face to her breasts and waist. She caught it and put it back no her
face. His breathing became slow and sensuous.” ibid

In this situation, Jugga is rich as compare to Nooran and they have
different religious sects. It may happen that Jugga is avoiding go with
docaits who murdered Lala Ram Chand and is compensating the same
powerful and overwhelming desire in process of love making. Pure love
emotion is challenged as this is a sort of compromise on part of
protagonist.
Deception, cheating, cunningness, and lies are associated with wish for
sex rather done in guise of sympathy in Khol Do by Sadat Hassan
Manto.
“The eight young men were very kind to Sakina. They fed her, offered
her milk, helped her into the truck- she did not have a duppatta and felt
rather awkward.”
But with the skillful pen of Manto describes:-
“The girl on the stretcher stirred a little. She moved her hand painfully
towards the cord holding up her shalwar. Slowly, she pulled her shalwar
down.5”
This description of brutality at the name of humanity is simply hair
raiser and a slap on the face of so called humans.
Khail Tamasha by Ishfaq Ahmad presents Iqbal a Muslim teacher
avoiding a non Muslim girl Rajni who is in love with Iqbal. Here are lines
by Iqbal:
“Before marriage, she said to her mother that if she wanted to send her
with Barat then let her meet master Bali for the last time. Otherwise
forget that she will ever go with Pandits of Bhagsar.6”
6. 6
Uncertain, unbelievable and quite surprising wish of Rajni is duly
fulfilled by her own mother just like the wish of Basanti in Wali-Allah is
granted by her mother.
Love is not the only appealing force in process of sex and sexuality.
Sometimes, religious, territorial, geographical and psychological factors
are more dominant. These factors turn this bond into revenge, hatred,
lust and brutality. The examples of Ice Candy Man by Bapsi Sidhwa7 and
Beloved by Toni Morrison8 highlight this image. The collective rape of
women and sending sacks full of women breasts to enemy state in Ice
Candy Man show that in extreme emotional state no matter of love or
hatred, humans turn to process of sexuality for revenge, for satisfaction
and for celebrations. In Beloved by Toni Morrison the rape of Sethe by
two mossy teeth boys is totally opposite to her involvement with Paul
D. Paul D is soothing source after emancipation for Sethe, as her will,
wish and intention is involved.
But Boo (odor) by Sadat Hassan Manto is some exception where a
smelling village girl is source of pleasure and satisfaction for a rich
person Randhir.
“Randhir was feeling a strange smell evaporating from each and every
part of her body. He used to drink that smell for whole night. The hair
of her under arms, her breasts, and her belly…..even each and every
organ of her body was filled with that magical smell”9.
This abstract shows that the major force is of smell. So the bent of mind
and present mental state matters that can make some common event a
special one.

Seemi shah in Raja Gidh by Bano Qudsia10 is in mental trauma after
losing Aftab, her true and pure love. She is so much absorbed and lost
in thought of him that she is totally ignorant about physical interaction
of Qayyum. Her unconscious, purity of her relation with Aftab and
strong imagination is striking in character of Seemi. She never says
anything about Qayyum rather she recalls Aftab after every sexual
intercourse.
Very same and resembling situation is in The Reluctant Fundamentalist
by Mohsin Hamid, where Erica is involved in love making with Changez
while lost in thought of Chris.
“I felt her skin break out in goose bumps, and I pulled her to me,
embracing her gently and giving first her forehead, and then her lips, a
kiss. She did not respond; she did not resist; she merely acceded when I
undressed her.”
“She told me I was first man she had been since Chris-indeed, other
than Chris.11”
So this human desire is not always source of satisfaction or love.
According situation and context it may revenge, lust, hatred, bias,
national, religious, geographical, ethnic, territorial or psychological
prejudice or unjust behavior. Moreover in above mentioned examples,
it caused death in the long run. Mithan of Wali-Allah is dead as the
group of people running after him forced him to death by thirst.
Juggat Singh of Train to Pakistan also died in rope cutting and saving his
expected child.
8. 8
Seemi Shah of Raja Gidh also died. Erica of The Reluctant
Fundamentalist vanishes in suspicious way.
Perhaps sexual process is reproductive as well as destructive. It is
source of celebration of happiness and expression of extreme
depression and dejection. In all literature of world presentation and
description is very much similar but the application, hidden meanings
and perspective is change rather opposite in some cases.
