The Mughal Empire lasted from 1526 to 1856 and was one of the largest centralized states in pre-modern world history. It was founded in 1526 by Babur and expanded by subsequent emperors to cover much of northern South Asia, including what is today Pakistan, northern India, and Bangladesh. The empire was ruled through an absolute monarchy and unitary state under the Timurid dynasty.
