ASSIGNMENT
Course Code : MS-01
Course Title : Management Functions and Behavior
Assignment Code : MS-01/TMA/SEM-II/2014
Coverage : All Blocks
Note: Attempt all the questions and submit this assignment on or before 31st October, 2014 to the
coordinator of your study centre.
Q. 1. Briefly describe the responsibilities a professional manager has towards various stakeholders
with respect to sustainability of a business organization. Cite example of any business organization,
and describe managerial responsibilities to support your response. Briefly describe the organization
and the position you are referring to.
Answer: Hiring good people is still a relatively simple task as compared to the task of retaining them;
people may join a company because of its favorable image but will stay on only if they find appreciation
for, and satisfaction from, their work. To retain talented people the manager should provide a
comfortable working environment which is conducive to work. More important than the physical
environment is the degree of freedom which a worker enjoys in making decisions within the defined
parameters of his job. Medical Scrubs given free to all is nice way to retain worker in a hospital business.
When a worker knows that it is his responsibility to produce results and he is accountable for them, he
will put his best effort.
On the other hand, if the worker is always ordered to do every single act, and nothing is left from him to
decide, whatever little potential exists in him will be killed. A worker should be able to take pride in his
work, derive satisfaction from saying “This is my
Q. 2. What hinders effective Decision-making? How can barriers to effective decision making be
overcome?
Draw from your own experience or the organizational experience, you are aware of, to support your
answer. Briefly describe the organization and the situation you are referring to.
Answer:Managing people effectively in extension programmes is a skill that requires constant planning
and development. An extension programme manager can be defined as the person who is vested with
formal authority over an organization or one of its sub units. He or she has status that leads to various
interpersonal relations, and from this comes access to information. Information, in turn, enables the
manager to devise strategies, make decisions, and implement action. Management is concerned with
the optimum attainment of organizational goals and objectives with and through other people.
Extension management organizations are characterized by many strategies, wide spans of control,
democracy, and autonomy. Their management practices canno
Q. 3. “Conflict can have both positive and negative impact on individuals, groups, and organisations.
As a result of inter-group conflict, certain changes occur within groups and between groups. Some
changes have positive effects, others have negative effects”.
Elaborate this statement and discuss the underlying concepts and dynamics with examples from the
organizational experience you have had or you are aware of. Briefly describe the organization and the
events you are referring to.
Answer:Intergroup relations between two or more groups and their respective members are often
necessary to complete the work required to operate a business. Many times, groups inter-relate to
accomplish the organization's goals and objectives, and conflict can occur. Some conflict , called
functional conflict, is considered positive, because it enhances performance and identifies weaknesses.
Dysfunctional conflict, however, is confrontation or interaction between groups that harms the
organization or hinders attainment of goals or objectives.
Q. 4. Define and describe strategic and operational planning. What are the essential steps involved in
planning for an enterprise?
Explain with examples from the experience you have or you are aware of. Briefly describe the
organization you are referring to.
Answer:Plans are sets of goals and ways to attain them. Without a plan, managers and their juniors may
not be able to achieve their goals or even know when they have run out of the right way. Strategic plans
are those established to meet organizations' extensive goals. On the other hand, operational plans are
those that contain fine points for executing or implementing, those strategic plans in everyday activities.
Time Period: Strategic plans cover a large span of time that is several years or decades. For instance, in
an organization, a strategic plan for latest information delivery would capture five years of
accomplishment. On the other hand, an operational plan covers one year. For instance, an organization
may have a procedure for stock replacement, which
