Automation
Me: It is inter-disciplinary term which means to make a task easy in a particular
passion i.e. without or minimal human intervention.
Me: Definitely, for example think about washing machine. They come with semi
automatic and full automatic. They just simplifies the human work in a way such that
all the processes are carried out by machine one after the other without or minimal
human intervention.
Me: At this time the machines are not actually intelligent to work as human can do
but we can contribute our knowledge and time in developing better automation
systems which could more intelligent and self sustaining models. In the next slide we
can briefly understand how, many of the Automation systems function.
Person1: Can you briefly explain it with an example?
Person1: So you mean to say that all work is done by the machine itself without any
human effort. Are machines so intelligent?
Person1: Ajay, What is Automation ?

Major Sectors of
Automation
Description of Trends
Industrial Automation Industrial automation deals primarily with the automation of manufacturing, quality control and material
handling processes. General purpose controllers for industrial processes include Programmable logic
controllers and computers.
Building Automation Building automation is the automatic centralized control of a building's heating, ventilation and air
conditioning, lighting and other systems through a Building Management System or Building Automation
System (BAS).
IT Automation Data Centre Automation, IT-Workload Automation, Support Automation, Automated IT-Service
Management, Cloud Automation, ITSM Process Automation, Run-Book-Automation and Policy-Based
Automation.
Broadcast Automation Broadcast automation incorporates the use of broadcast programming technology to automate
broadcasting operations. Used either at a broadcast network, radio station or a television station, it can
run a facility in the absence of a human operator.
Automated Teller
Machines
Automated Teller Machines (ATM) is an electronic telecommunications device that enables the
customers of a financial institution to perform financial transactions without the need for a human
cashier, clerk or bank teller.
Automated Vehicles An autonomous car, also known as a driverless car, self-driving car and robotic car, is an automated or
autonomous vehicle capable of fulfilling the main transportation capabilities of a traditional car. As an
autonomous vehicle, it is capable of sensing its environment and navigating without human input.
Robotics The branch of technology that deals with the design, construction, operation, structural disposition,
manufacture and application of robots and computer systems for their control, sensory feedback, and
information processing.
Me: It’s a difficult question to answer but I think ‘Building Automation’ and in that particularly home
automation is going to make big impact.
Me: Building Automation has been a hot topic from a decade and recent studies shows there will be more
than 20 Billion devices connected to internet till 2020 and more than 27% of the devices will be building
automation and home automation components like security cameras, smart appliances, HVAC systems etc..
Me: Connected-home device shipments will grow at a compound annual rate of 67% over the next five
years, much faster than smartphone or tablet device growth, and hit 1.8 billion units shipped in 2019,
according to BusinessInsider Intelligence estimates.
Person1: Can you briefly explain how could it make such a big impact?
Person1: Ajay, Which trend is going to make big impact in next 5 years ?
Me: Connected-home device sales will drive over $61 billion in revenue this year. That number will climb at a
52% compound annual growth rate to reach $490 billion in 2019. Home-energy equipment and safety and
security systems, including devices like connected thermostats and smoke detectors, will become popular
first, leading the way to broader consumer adoption.
Note: All the estimates are take from www.businessinsider.com and www.forbes.com
Me: Basically my interests are making an best user interface between the machine and the
man. So that major things happen at the backend in M2M communications and humans can
easily use it as Natural User interface with an voice commands feature as addition.
Me: Actually, I am good at creative thinking and visualizing the design. I can make 3D CAD
models to demonstrate the idea and program the microcontrollers achieve the desired
functionalities. I have learnt those skills and practiced them by making few projects in 3rd year
of bachelors degree. I will put my entire knowledge of mechatronics and efforts in making it.
Me: I will learn the work culture and get knowledge from experts in the field. I will work as
team member and thus making my team more powerful. I believe in “Make It Happen”. I
would certainly try to bring smartphone functionalities such as digital assistant feature, face
detection, touch control feature etc. to user interfaces we create for home automation if
given an opportunity to work as intern. For example we can add digital assistant feature at
our doors so that if someone comes it could welcome them and record the message.
Person1: Can you give us an example how you would innovate?
Person1: what do you intend to work on if given internship opportunity.
Person1: Ajay, What are your interests in Home Automation ?
Thank You…
