This document defines motivation and discusses its classification and process. Motivation is an internal state that activates and directs behavior toward satisfying needs and desires. Motives can be unconscious, personal, social, or physiological drives. The motivation process involves a need or drive creating tension, performing an action for a reward, and receiving need satisfaction. Examples are given of incentives motivating a child's school performance and physiological drives being satisfied by drinking water to reduce thirst.
