Through the motif of sisterhood in The Hunger Games, Collins develops the theme that family, whether natural or adopted, is essential for survival. Katniss does everything she can to protect her sister Prim, even volunteering for the Hunger Games in her place. In the arena, Katniss finds strength from thinking of Prim and forms an alliance with Rue, who reminds her of Prim. However, Katniss also acknowledges that family cannot always be protected, as shown by her reluctance to have children due to the dangers they might face.
