Smooth Moves
Transitional tools that never fail.
Dream
date?
Or, maybe
this is
what you
were
thinking?
The art of the pick up
●You've got to be at your smoothest to win
that person's attention.
● The smoothest talkers find ways to make
connections.
● Smooth connections, also known as
transitions, can pull together two totally
different ideas.
Making connections
●Each of these pick up lines seeks to make a
connection where there was none before:
oExcuse me, can you empty your pockets? I
believe you have stolen my heart.
oAre you a parking ticket? Because you
have fine written all over you.
oDo you know karate? Because your body
is kickin'.
Smooth writing
● The best writers make connections or
transition between ideas too.
o Between paragraphs
 transition sentences
o Within paragraphs
 linking words
o Introducing direct quotes
 incorporating others' ideas into their own
sentences
(Notice how I transitioned between dating
and writing?)
Between paragraphs
Paragraph A: points that support the view
that the new government is very democratic
Transition sentence: Despite previous
arguments, there are many reasons to think
that new government is not as democratic as
typically believed.
Paragraph B: points that contradict the
view that the new government is democratic.
Within sentences
●Linking words are your friends. See the
handy handout!
● These words indicate the kind of relationship
you want to convey through your examples.
● In fact, your excellent English teacher has
even provided an example of a linking word
that emphasizes her point for you.
Direct quotes
According to English teachers Mundy and
Skotnicki, "students should always incorporate
direct quotes into their own sentences." Doing
so demonstrates ownership of the quote.
Someone else might have said it, but the writer
makes it her own when she frames and explains
it.
● How does the blue text function here?
● What role does the purple text serve?
Insert transition here.
When do you need to be smooth operators and
add transitions to your writing?
