This presentation provides an overview of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). It discusses that MOOCs aim to provide unlimited participation through online courses accessed via the web. The first MOOC was launched in 2008 and was called CCK8. There are two main types of MOOCs - C-MOOCs focus on connective and informal learning while X-MOOCs are more formal and assessment-based. The presenter is interested in forensic science, criminal science and microbiology MOOCs to learn about the role of science in criminal investigations and microorganisms.

It was created by educators Stephen Downes and George Siemens
Around 2,200 people signed up for CCK08
• In 2012, Two Stanford Professors Sebastian Thrun and Peter Norvig decided to
offer “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” for free online

• More than 160,000 students in 190 countries signed up
• In 2013, the Open University built its own MOOC
platform, Futurelearn, which featured universities from the United
Kingdom etc.

It appear to have developed out of the idea of Open Course Ware and Open
Educational Resources

The learning takes place in a more formal manner

The assessments are coordinated and quizzed

It is used by major universities

involves science and its role in the criminal justice.
• Furthermore, I am also interested in knowing more about the micro
